町田の駅前を歩き出す。熱を含んだ通りの空気は重く、先へ進む足が思うように伸びない。遠くまで歩くつもりだった予定を切り上げ、辿り着いたのは宗保院──戦国の時代に創建された曹洞宗の寺だ。境内には七福神の像が静かに佇み、六体の地蔵が並んでいた。磨かれたものと風化したものが混じり合い、時間の層がそのまま形になっているように見える。誰が何のために並べたのか、それを語る言葉はないけれど、無言の配置に不思議な説得力があった。ふと視線を移せば、旧原町田駅周辺の風景が滲む。飲食店が入れ替わり、建て替えられた商業施設はマンションへと姿を変え、かつて賑わいを見せた場所には、静かすぎる空気が流れていた。映画の中で使われたトイレがまだそこにあるのも、偶然ではないような気がした。変わりゆく都市と、変わらずに立ち続ける仏たち。両者の間にあるゆらぎに触れるような、そんな歩みだった。
