In this episode, we’ll condense three days of highlights into one, covering nearly a quarter of Taiwan— over 300 kilometers of adventure. I was just cleaning my sandals, and I said I didn’t know what I stepped on. I was shaking it off, and suddenly a centipede popped out. Was that its eggs? Was that its eggs? Wow, after so many days on the road, this is the first time it rained in the morning. Whoa, someone’s riding a scooter with an umbrella. On the tenth day of our trip, we arrived in Yilan. This was not only where we first met— Kaka actually lived here for eight years. Even though I really wanted to ride around aimlessly like I used to, our island tour mission came first. Time was limited. So we decided to revisit this place in the most direct way possible. This breakfast place is called “Quack Quack Breakfast.” It’s more of a local spot in Luodong. Most people would miss it. Its sign has faded so much you can barely see it. Like a Mei Er Mei from 20 years ago. Careful there. Time to pay? Yup. 165 dollars. Alright. 165 NTD. But I started because of this Sichuan-style lamb noodles. It opened the door to my spicy food journey. It was my spicy food awakening. I remember you never ate spicy food before. Yeah, but one time I tasted the soup, and it was just so good. Even though it was super spicy, I had to finish it. From that day on— from that day on— I started eating spicy food after that bowl. Because the ice they use is made with a bit of sugar water. So the sweet and sour balance is just right, I think. And also— Personally, I don’t like too many toppings. So I only get peanuts. But Pinglin’s tea aroma, Shiding’s stilt houses, and Shenkeng’s stinky tofu still remain through the rainy days, quietly guarding the stories they once held. Maybe we should take a detour. Pinglin Old Street… kinda seems like there’s not much going on. Maybe we came on the wrong day. Almost everything was closed on this weekday. With bad weather and limited time, guess we’ll save this adventure for next time. Now we’re heading up County Road 106B toward Shiding. But this mountain road… doesn’t really seem to like us. Now it’s a quiet little town, but it used to be a bustling mountain town where tea and coal mingled. With the passing of time, in just a few decades, the glorious scene has long disappeared.
