Iconic BLT Sandwich Shop Near Iwakuni US Base: Loved by Locals and Military for 62 Years! “SAKO”
Sandwich restaurant loved by Iwakuni Base officials for 62 years. BLTs, onion rings and taco rice. A day in the life of SAKO and many memorable stories. Enjoy the video until the end. Very close to Iwakuni Base. Interesting dollar signage around the area. She has worked at the Iwakuni base for nearly 40 years in secretarial and other duties. I worked at the military hospital on the base 14 years ago. At that time, a very important man from the USA came to Iwakuni. He eventually reached the rank of Medical secretary of the Navy. He used to come here to Restaurant SAKO when he was young and he loved their BLT. But he was busy and wouldn’t be able to go to SAKO during his stay, so I decided to surprise him and buy one for him. When I went to buy it, the master of SAKO told me that there was no one to take over the restaurant. I asked him if the restaurant was going to disappear then? He said yes. I said my husband is retiring from his job at the base in two years’ time and could I take over the restaurant then? He asked me to write down my contact information. Two years later, he called me and asked if I really wanted to take over the restaurant. We said yes please and we took over SAKO. Fourteen years have passed since then. Combined with the previous master, this restaurant has been around for 62 years! Many people have known SAKO. The oldest came to the restaurant from the USA after 49 years. 49, 45, 38, 30 years, etc. Many people come back to SAKO again. Some of the sons came to the restaurant after hearing about it from their fathers. Bacon is cooked slowly over low heat, SAKO style. American people like it crispy just before it burns. Many Japanese like a mix of soft and crispy bits. The United States. Love crispy bacon. Even if I’m cooking with crispy bacon, can you cook it more crispy when I order? Sometimes they’ll say. The tomatoes in the BLT are big and juicy! US dollar notes all over the wall. They leave them there to say that they have come to SAKO and to wish the restaurant good luck. I was very sorry, but all the customers were patiently waiting for me, and I appreciated that. Everyone is always so kind and helpful. A very memorable customer for Missie. The couple had been living in the USA since they were posted to Iwakuni when they were young. The husband told his wife about SAKO all the time. He was very ill and it was the last time he came to Japan. He told his wife he wanted to come to Iwakuni, although he was not sure if the restaurant (SAKO) still existed. If the store was closed, he said, just looking at the sign would be enough for me. And actually come to Iwakuni, The restaurant was still open and he was so happy. I was so happy to hear the story that I shed tears. He ordered his first BLT in over 40 years. He said it was delicious. He is my most memorable customer. This pilot is my friend. He was among the elite of the elite of U.S. military pilots. He visited this restaurant again in 2019 and told me this. Mr. Harris brought this photo. I’m glad. SAKO’s old menu list Back then, fried rice was 200 yen. Missie’s life’s work is to invite US Army personnel as guests for English conversation classes. This homemade BLT sandwich restaurant has been a favorite of U.S. military base personnel in Iwakuni for 62 years. What a surprise that SAKO is being taken over by the restaurant to go to among those who have arrived. It is a wonderful restaurant with many stories that was featured in PLAYBOY in the U.S. back in the day. It continues to remain in the hearts of many people, so much so that there are people who say they came to SAKO for a BLT for the first time in 40 years. We hope you enjoy it!

岩国で62年間、米軍基地関係者に愛され続けるホームメイドのBLTサンドウィッチのお店。なんと着任者たちの中で、行くべきレストランにSAKOが引き継がれるとか。その昔、アメリカのPLAYBOYでも紹介された多くのストーリーを持つ素敵なお店です。40年ぶりにBLTを食べにSAKOへ来たよという方がいるくらい、いろんな方の心に残り続けています。

サコのママです。9月26日のYouTube以来、これを見て😢今もって一日も欠かさずに来られるお客様が続いています。英語を嗜んでおられる方々には店内におられるアメリカンとお話しをされるようお勧めしています。日米お互いにとっても喜んで下さいますし、これこそ日米親善の一つ。店内が暖かさでいっぱい🎉❣️11月23日、木曜は🇺🇸感謝祭で、クリスマス同様、家族で過ごされるのでアメリカンは殆ど来られません。先日ロールス・ロイスの副社長が来店‼️😊最高に素敵な方でした‼️

私も岩国基地に長らく働いていましたがおっしゃる通り本当に納得のいかない事もありましたし、あります。 悪い事が起こると米軍の殆どの方々が心から申し訳ないと思っておられます。上層部はそのような事がないように日々最善の策を取っておられますがほんの一部が😢残念。ホストカントリーである日本を尊敬し、愛している方々は数えきれないです。嬉しいですね。

米軍の兵士に少しでも、ママの味を聞いて作って見ては、遥々祖国を離れ異国の日本で勤務するのですから、少しでも祖国のママの味を再現すればいかがでしょうか。完璧は無理しかも知れませんがママの味を米軍兵士から聞いてレシピを残し少しで疲れと故郷のママの味労う意味でも。
米軍基地の周辺にあった店で残っている貴重な憩いの店なんですね。懐かしくて良い雰囲気は素晴らしいです。何時までも残って欲しい店ですね
