Hey everyone, it’s seaman here. I’ve arrived in Gotemba City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It’s been so hot every day that it’s hard to ride my bike, but I really wanted to ride a bit, so I came all the way to Gotemba today. So today, I’m planning to stay at the Ashigara Service Area on the Tomei Expressway, but there weren’t any convenience stores nearby, so I came to Gotemba to buy some beer.
(They don’t sell alcohol at Japanese highway service areas.) It seems the hotel is in the service area on the way to Tokyo, so let’s head there for now. Today, I’m using a special “touring plan,” so I can get on and off the highway freely. Alright, I can see the sign for Ashigara Service Area, just off the Gotemba Interchange! It says “Rest Inn”!! Staying overnight on the highway just feels exciting, you know? We’re almost at Ashigara Service Area. Actually, I haven’t been to the Ashigara Service Area on the Tokyo-bound side much. The inn was right in front of the motorcycle parking.
*There’s also covered parking. Alright, let’s head to the inn right away. The hotel I’m staying at this time is called Rest Inn Tokinosumika, and it’s the only hotel on the Tokyo-bound side of the Tomei Expressway. It seems the hotel and public bath reception are behind the souvenir shop. Uh, today you’ll be using room 207. Guests can use the large public bath for free. Today, many truck drivers are using it, so there might be busy times. So, please call extension 9 before using the bath. We’ll guide you based on the situation then. It’s open continuously until tomorrow’s checkout, so please use it anytime you like. So, I checked in! The hotel is generally old, but it looks pretty clean. The hallway smells strongly of cigarettes, but there seem to be many truck drivers, so I guess it can’t be helped. Well, I’m just here for fun! Truck drivers, you really work hard. Oh, this is it. The key is easy to open!! *Flashback to Sano Service Area Now, presenting today’s room. Not bad! I see. There were pajamas here, which Sano Service Area didn’t have. Towels are also provided, so you can stay without bringing anything. Got a point card. Even so, Ashigara SA is relatively close to my house, so I probably won’t stay here that often… Alright, let me properly introduce the room. No closet, but plenty of hangers. It also comes with a mirror and a desk, just like a business hotel. The room is a bit small at 19 square meters. The view from the window is pretty meh.
*You probably can’t see Mt. Fuji. The sink area looks like this. The toilet has a bidet. The bath is small, but no problem since there’s a public bath! Uh, the hardness of the bed is… Hard. This is quite firm. Oh, sorry to the person next door. I wonder how comfortable it is to sleep on… A single room costs 6,300 yen per person. They also have Japanese-style rooms and couple plans, starting from 3,700 yen per person! Hey, there’s a thunderstorm warning out… I’m debating whether to ride my bike… Excuse me, um… This is room 207, and what’s the situation with the bath right now? One person. Is no one there? Oh, really? Okay, I’m coming now. Anyway, I’m going to the bath. It’s not a hot spring, but it’s apparently a highly concentrated carbonated spring, which is said to have benefits for recovering from fatigue. It was hot today too, so I’ll go wash off all the sweat. *This is the actual bath. It was as hot as Kusatsu Onsen! By the way, the women’s bath was completely empty and super comfortable, but the water was so hot I’m sweating again, haha. Sweaty. Alright, I’m going to explore the service area and grab some dinner. Can I get 6 takoyaki? Sauce, mayonnaise, bonito flakes, green laver – can I put all of them on? Uh, no mayonnaise, please. Okay, understood. Shall I put it on the side? Yes, please. I didn’t know there was a place to eat Shizuoka Oden at Ashigara Service Area! It’s been since my Shizuoka touring trip that I’ve had Shizuoka Oden. I’m going to try a food I don’t know called “Fuwa.” I like a lot of broth. Is it better with miso paste? I don’t know how to use the “miso” or “dashi powder,” but I’ll take whatever I can get, haha. I’ve got the best dinner ever! I’m back! Ta-da! Takoyaki from “Kukuru” and “Shizuoka Oden”! By the way, service areas don’t sell alcohol, so if you want to drink at the hotel, be careful. This is why staying at service areas gets so addictive! The combo of takoyaki and oden is the best. Everyone, please try having a party at Ashigara Service Area too, haha! Oh yeah, let’s connect to Wi-Fi. The password is… The Wi-Fi is fast enough to watch videos. Seems like it’s fine for people who want to work on their laptops too.
Tonight, I toast with “Gotemba Kogen Beer”! Oh, “Fuwa” was really delicious.
*Fuwa = beef lung Ending the day with takoyaki and Shizuoka oden. I never knew such a happy end to a day existed until I stayed at a service area. Meanwhile, Fukusuke was… I changed into my pajamas. It’s still quite hot at night, so I’m going to put this on before sleeping. Many hotels don’t provide toothbrushes, but this place has pretty much everything you need, so it’s great that you can stay empty-handed. It’s good if you suddenly need to stay somewhere, and there’s a convenience store right there, so it’s pretty great. So, I think I’ll go to bed soon tonight.
Good night. Good morning! Today’s weather is… It’s gloomy. I’ll go check if my bike is okay. Looks like it’s fine. There’s just something nice about a service area early in the morning. By the way, at Ashigara, McDonald’s and the convenience store are open 24 hours, so it’s great that you can get breakfast or even a morning McDonald’s even if you leave early! Now, for the national weather forecast. The Pacific side of Tohoku, near the rainy season front, will see significant rainfall. Daytime temperatures. Mid-summer heat will continue. Temperatures of 35℃ or higher will occur frequently from Tohoku to Kyushu. Well, I’m planning to go out for a short bike ride after this, but it looks like another scorching 35℃ day. Gotta ride carefully. I came to eat breakfast. I considered McDonald’s, but I went with the natto rice set meal instead, haha. Let’s eat! Delicious!!!!!!!! All eaten. Thanks for the meal. 足柄SAの宿泊施設はすごーく昔からありますが、女性も泊まれるようになったのは女性ドライバーさんが増えたのが背景かもですね。

足柄サービスエリアは下りは時々利用するけど、上りはほとんど寄った事が無いですねぇ💦
レストハウスとお風呂があることは知っていたのですが時の栖が経営していたとは知らなかったです。時の栖は御殿場の奥の方に広大な敷地を持ったホテルや日帰り温泉やレストランやサッカー場等さまざまな施設があり、冬場は綺麗なイルミネーションが見れますよ😄

毎回映像は勿論ですがBGMも楽しみです。楽しいシーンの曲は元気が溢れるようで良かったです。最近特に良かったのが、しまなみ海道ボナプール部屋紹介と昇仙峡の湖でコーヒーのシーンでのFranz Gordonのワルツ曲です。この2曲は全曲を聴いてみたら流麗なワルツ曲で大のお気に入りになりました。この曲を選曲紹介して頂いたことに感謝しています。次回も素敵な選曲に期待しております。
