【Walk in Japan】 Utsunomiya Station, Tochigi Walking Tour & Gyoza – 栃木 宇都宮駅 餃子 Johnny JAM🎸
Welcome to Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture – the gyoza capital of Japan! Utsunomiya is known throughout Japan for its delicious gyoza, or Japanese dumplings. On this walk, we’ll explore the streets around Utsunomiya Station, discovering some of the best gyoza spots. From small, family-owned shops to larger gyoza chains, you’ll find plenty of choices here. The story of Utsunomiya’s gyoza fame dates back to post-World War II, when soldiers brought back recipes from China. Today, Utsunomiya boasts more than 200 gyoza restaurants, each offering their own unique twist on this beloved dish. As we walk, you’ll notice the streets are filled with banners and signs advertising gyoza. Many restaurants here serve gyoza as their specialty, with fillings ranging from pork to seafood and vegetables. You’ll find different types of gyoza – from pan-fried to steamed and even boiled. Our first stop is a local favorite known for its crispy, golden-brown pan-fried gyoza. One of the best things about gyoza in Utsunomiya is how affordable and delicious they are. For tourists, it’s a perfect way to experience the local food culture without breaking the bank. Let’s take a look inside this cozy restaurant, where you can watch the chefs making fresh gyoza. You’ll often see chefs preparing gyoza by hand, skillfully folding the dough with precise movements. This skill has been passed down through generations, making the gyoza here truly special. The smell of the gyoza cooking is mouth-watering – a mix of garlic, ginger, and soy sauce. Once the gyoza is cooked, it’s served piping hot with a side of dipping sauce. You can dip your gyoza in soy sauce, vinegar, and chili oil, or customize your own dipping mix. This is the perfect snack or meal for anyone who loves dumplings and bold flavors. Now that we’ve had our fill of gyoza, let’s continue exploring the streets of Utsunomiya. You’ll notice that Utsunomiya has a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It’s a city that feels both modern and steeped in tradition, making it a great place to explore. For visitors, the proximity to both urban life and nature is one of the major draws of Utsunomiya. Nearby, you can take a short train ride to Nikko, a famous UNESCO World Heritage Site. But for now, let’s continue our walk and discover more of what Utsunomiya has to offer. In addition to gyoza, Utsunomiya is known for its jazz culture and live music venues. The city hosts the Utsunomiya Jazz Festival, drawing fans from all over the country. If you’re a music lover, there are plenty of jazz cafes and bars where you can enjoy live performances. As we continue our walk, you’ll see many shops offering souvenirs and local products. These include locally-made sake, traditional crafts, and, of course, gyoza-themed items. The gyoza mascot is a popular symbol of the city and can be found on various products. For tourists, this area is a great place to pick up a souvenir or enjoy a relaxing stroll. Let’s take a moment to appreciate the laid-back vibe of Utsunomiya. It’s a great place to slow down and experience everyday life in Japan away from the big cities. As we continue walking, you’ll see more of the hidden gems of Utsunomiya. The streets are lined with small shops, each with their own character and charm. Whether you’re here for the food, the culture, or the atmosphere, Utsunomiya has something for everyone. If you’re visiting Tochigi Prefecture, a trip to Utsunomiya is definitely worth your time. This walk has been just a glimpse of what this charming city has to offer. Thank you for joining us on this Utsunomiya gyoza walk. Until next time, happy exploring!

Adult Beginner Piano Progress 🎹 from October 2023
I started to read music sheet and practice piano from October 2023. Before that, I play chord on piano but did not know how to read music sheet and play piano. It’s my record of piano journey in order to motivate beginners like me.
At the first month I used “Burnam Piano – A dozen a day” to learn the basic. It’s hard to get used to play with both hands and reading music score.
Little by little I get used to play piano and,
I learn “Canon – Pachelbel” easy ver.
Still it was hard to read music score. So I used Piano keys stamp and write on the music score. Also I learn how to read music score. I learned a lot from reading score on desk, without playing piano. Of course playing piano is essential. But it was nice to read, write and understand the score. How chord works, bass note, and octave movement of notes (interval on notes).
I started “For Elise – Beethoven” (easy ver.) I only play easy ver.
I started to play with music score, and it is without writing “Do Re Mi” on score(normal score). I upgraded from super beginner score to beginner score. At 4 month passed (Month 5).
At Month 5, I start to play easy ver. of
“La Campanella – Franz Liszt”
“Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence – Ryuichi Sakamoto / 戦場のメリークリスマス – 坂本龍一”
“Gymnopedie No.1 – Erik Satie”
“energy flow – Ryuichi Sakamoto 坂本龍一”
At month 6, I start to play
“Asience – Ryuichi Sakamoto 坂本龍一”
“Hanon”
and learn music theory; scale, chord progression and mode.
At month7
“The Girl from Ipanema”
“Just the two of us”
Still it’s impossible to play smoothly, but I continue my piano journey. 🙂
