【加速する衰退】観光地があるのに衰退していくレトロな温泉街。景観を損ねる廃墟の悪循環 / 北海道一周の旅!神の子池→摩周湖→硫黄山→川湯温泉→屈斜路湖(野湯)星野リゾート

Kawayu Onsen is a declining hot spring town. Hello everyone, my name is Watatabi. This time, I would like to head to Hokkaido while visiting the surrounding tourist spots. It is a hot spring resort whose source is Mt. Io, which is still active today, and is located in Teshikaga Town, Hokkaido. Surrounded by nature, with Lake Mashu to the east and Lake Kussharo to the west. It is a hot spring town filled with the scent of sulfur. It is one of the strongest acids in Japan and has high sterilizing power, and is said to be good for skin diseases. It’s more sour than lemons, and if you soak a nail in a hot spring, it will melt away in two to three weeks. We will head to Kawayu Onsen, which has such amazing spring quality, while visiting the surrounding tourist spots. First of all , we will aim for the popular tourist spot “Kamiko Pond” located about 32 km from Kawayu Onsen . The rain turned to snow. From Route 1115, drive on a gravel road that resembles a forest road. Although it is close to the city, you will walk through a deep forest that resembles a sea of trees. Although it has a feeling of being a secluded area, it can be reached by driving just 2km from a forest road. A small pond with a circumference of 220m and a depth of 5m will appear. So let’s go take a look. Beyond the promenade is a small pond with a circumference of 220m and a depth of 5m. 12,000 tons of underground water gushes out each day, making it a pond that never freezes even in winter. Lake Mashu is called “Kamuito = Lake of the Gods” in the Ainu language, and it is thought that groundwater from Lake Mashu flowed into it, so it is called “Child of God Pond.” God’s child pond. The water temperature is maintained at 8℃ throughout the year, and the fallen trees that sink into the pond will never rot. Inside the pond, you can see “Oshorokoma,” a species of char that lives in cold regions. The pond is a beautiful blue color even when the weather is bad like today. It is a recommended tourist spot where you can feel the mystery and life. The weather was nice when I returned home. Unfortunately, I have other places to go, so I’m leaving Kaminoko Pond behind. Next, we will head to Lake Mashu, which is nearby. Although it is nearby, there are no roads in the area, so you have to go around it. The weather suddenly changed. Because the surrounding topography makes it easy for dense fog to form, it is also known as “Misty Lake Mashu.” Lake Mashu. I can’t see anything. You can barely tell that it’s a lake. I haven’t eaten anything since morning, so I’ll finish my meal here. The shop located at the observation deck has a wide variety of items. I haven’t bought any souvenirs in Hokkaido so let’s buy some. It’s a great buy. Popcorn from Hanabatake Farm, chocolate from Rokkatei , chocolate from Shiroi Koibito, cookies from Lloyd’s, and butter candy from Lake Mashu. You can also enjoy your meal while looking out at Lake Mashu. When I was turning the camera, I could see Lake Mashu! I’ll go see it quickly. I was able to see Lake Mashu, which is rarely seen. However, I was not able to see the beautiful lake known as “Mashu Blue”. However, I am very happy that I was able to buy souvenirs. No matter where you visit Hokkaido, the scenery is truly majestic. When you think of Hokkaido, you think of “butadon”. You will have a spectacular view right in front of you. Eating while looking at a spectacular view is a luxury. Bone-in flank. It smells very smoked. Before going to Kawayu Onsen, we will head to Mt. Io, which is the source of Kawayu Onsen. Mt. Io is called “Atosanupuri” in the Ainu language, which means “naked mountain.” From the early Meiji period to the 1950s, it was used as a mine for mining sulfur. Sulfur was in high demand as a raw material for matches and gunpowder, and the mining industry was said to have rapidly developed. Mt. Io is located in the center of Kussharo Caldera, Japan’s largest caldera , which was formed approximately 35,000 to 25,000 years ago, and is 512 meters above sea level, and is still constantly active. The volcanic smoke you can see in front of you is Mt. Sulfur. It is an active volcano whose fumaroles can be seen from the closest distance in Japan, and there are said to be over 1,500 fumaroles. Most of the mountain is designated as a restricted area, so climbing is not allowed. We have arrived. That’s amazing. This is Mt. Sulfur. It seems to be called “Atosanupuri” in Ainu language. The sun was just shining on the top of the mountain, making it look magical. It looks like I can see it pretty close, so I’m going to go. White smoke containing sulfur rises, and the surrounding area smells strongly of sulfur. You can see it so close! It’s powerful and you can feel the breath of the earth. It’s very close to Kawayu Onsen, so we recommend sightseeing at the same time. I’m looking forward to soaking in this hot spring. There is also a shop called “Ioyama MOKMOK Base” in the parking lot. As soon as you enter, there is a space to the right where you can see Mt. Io. There is a small space called “Ioyama Museum” between the shop and the shop. You can learn about the history of Mt. Io. Hokkaido has a wide variety of souvenirs that will get you excited. The most popular food is steamed eggs from Kawayu Onsen. Eggs made in sulfur springs are the most delicious. Then we will head to Kawayu Onsen. It’s snowing. I came the next morning due to adult circumstances. And then we arrived at Kawayu Onsen. The hot springs opened in 1886 and are said to have started as a hot spring inn for sulfur miners. Until the end of the Taisho era, there was only one hot spring inn in the Kawayu area, but when Akan became a candidate for a national park, the area suddenly started to become more crowded. It began to prosper as a hot spring town in the Showa era. However, as the war spread, the tourism industry stagnated. After the war, the hotel overcame many hardships, including 16 buildings and 31 households in the city burning down due to children playing with fire, and at its peak in 1991, it attracted 734,000 guests a year. However, the number of guests continued to decline after that, due to the self-restraint mood caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake, the impact of the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake, and the spread of the new coronavirus infection, the number of guests in 2020 fell to 91,000, and the hotel is currently closed . Abandoned hotels and ruins are a landscape problem. Not only that, but the population also decreased due to an outflow of human resources due to the closure of hotels and inns, and the population decreased from 13,000 in 1960 to just under 6,700 in 2023. A high-temperature hot spring flows through the hot spring town, and has been called “Sesekibetsu” (hot river) by the Ainu people since ancient times. The origin of Kawayu is a free translation of “Sesekibetsu” (hot river). This promenade, “Kawayu Ganban Terrace,” is an area that symbolizes Kawayu Onsen, and it was renovated a month before I visited. Hoshino Resorts has decided to expand into Kawayu Onsen , which is the reason for the development of the hot spring town in a time of decline . This is a revitalization project to create a Kawayu hot spring town by Hoshino Resorts, Teshikaga Town, and the Ministry of the Environment. This may be Kawayu Onsen’s chance to survive. Moreover , I have also stayed at KAI Anjin in Ito Onsen , which is part of Hoshino Resorts’ hot spring inn brand KAI, and I am looking forward to Kawayu Onsen as it is characterized by being able to experience the culture, nature, and charm of the area. It’s big. It is scheduled to open in 2026. Demolition work on the ruins is currently underway. It is a small hot spring town and there is no entertainment district. Hoshino Resorts has set the development concept as “a hot spring town in a caldera forest where a river of hot water flows.”With an overwhelming sense of scale, you can bathe in the river where hot springs flow, and there are food stalls along the river. They are proposing a variety of spaces that take advantage of the rich nature of Akan-Mashu National Park , such as Kawayu Yokocho, which is lined with trees . This is a footbath with a strongly acidic source. The hot springs are more sour than lemons and are called “hot lemons.” The spring quality is acidic, sulfur-containing, iron-containing (II, III), sodium-sulfate, chloride hot spring with a pH of around 1.6 to 1.9. There is a public bath opposite the footbath, so I’ll go there. We arrived at Kawayu public bath. This public bath reopened in September 2024. It was founded in 1958 and has been loved by hot spring fans all over the country, but it was closed in 2022 due to the aging of the management and the deterioration of the facilities. We received permission to take pictures, so let’s go in. The inside of the building has a somewhat nostalgic, retro feel. I’m a plasterer (manager), and as a hobby I run a small museum that displays old things called “Nostalgia Museum.” That’s why some of his collection is on display here. This long isosceles triangular flag is said to have been a standard souvenir from the Showa era called a “pennant.” Although this is the first time I have seen it, I can imagine what it was like back then and it stirs up my emotions. I don’t collect anything, but I love looking at old things. This is what the inside of the building looks like. The women’s bath is on the left, and the men’s bath is on the right. The fee is 500 yen for adults and 300 yen for children. Since the hot springs are quite acidic, it is best to avoid wearing glasses, accessories, and precious metals. It’s tile art, but the women’s bath is Lake Mashu and the men’s bath is Mt. Ioyama, so you’ll feel like you’re bathing in a hot spring on the banks of Kawayu. No shampoo or conditioner provided. It’s coming up. As the hot springs are highly acidic, the area around my lips was extremely sour. I think the bathtub on the left is about 43-44℃, and the one on the right is about 40-41℃. Sorry if I’m wrong. The spring quality is clear and colorless sulfur spring. The scent of sulfur was amazing and I love sulfur springs so it was the best hot spring. It was a really nice hot spring. I enjoyed talking with the employees. We will now head to Lake Kussharo, Japan’s largest caldera lake. Apparently there are many wild hot springs at Lake Kussharo. Lake Kussharo is the largest caldera lake in Japan. We have arrived. It’s “Ike no Yu”. It’s a very open outdoor bath. It’s in full view. The inside of this open-air bath is said to be slippery. There are changing rooms as well. There are ones for women and men. This is an open-air bath where you can wear swimsuits. It’s a bit open, so… I don’t think anyone will want to see it, so I’d like to wear a swimsuit and enter. This is the changing room. I’m going to transform a little. Someone forgot their glasses. There are multiple warnings. It seems to be quite slippery in the bathtub. It’s extremely cold. It’s snowing now. If it’s lukewarm, it’s over. Oh, the fish are swimming. lie? ! Ah, it’s lukewarm… isn’t it? It’s about 40℃. It’s about 41 degrees Celsius. Surprisingly, the bottom is gravel so you won’t slip. Over there, my wife looked at me and was laughing so hard. Maybe that’s putting it down. I was told, “I’m going to go into this place,” so by the way, it’s a spectacular view. In front of you are snow-capped mountains and a lake. Please rest assured that this is not dirt from my body . It’s a wild hot spring after all, so if you stir it with your feet, something like moss will come to the surface. I don’t think it’s that unsanitary, but I don’t think it’s good for people who don’t like it. The parts of the rock that are not gravel are covered with moss and are extremely slippery. There’s a hot spring source in this area, and it’s extremely warm. However, it’s a bit cold… I won’t be able to go out until it warms up. Not recommended in winter. I couldn’t get warm. cold! I entered the women’s changing room by mistake… But my body feels a little warm. . Finally, there is a hot spring called “Kotan Onsen” nearby, so let’s go there. We arrived at Kotan Onsen, but there were customers taking a bath so I couldn’t take pictures, but you can also take a bath while looking out at the lake. It seems that the water here is warmer and more suitable than the pond water from earlier. If you are going to enter, I think this is the better option. How was your trip to Kawayu Onsen and the surrounding tourist spots? Hokkaido is full of fascinating places! I would like to continue enjoying my trip to Hokkaido. See you in the next video! Thank you for watching until the end.

  4. I don't want to hear any more complaints about so-called "over-tourism." Japan needs to get its act together.

  7. Good, too much inclusive rules in Japan, never felt welcome into his country even though I follow and respect all their unique etiquette.
