Anywhere is fine. Get off at any station that comes to mind and walk around the area. The moment you get off the train, it’s a small journey to walk through an unfamiliar town. This time, I walked along the border between Tokyo and Kanagawa, Japan. I walked along the flow of the Sakai River, passing by a flood control basin that still retains its former course. The temple I could see in the distance was Senryu-ji Temple, founded around 1530. The hollowed-out Jizo statue, the three-story pagoda, the statue of Benten and the Jizo statue of Koiku-jizo enshrined in the grounds – each and every one of them was filled with the time of prayer. Eventually, the road returned to the Tokyo side, passing through residential areas and coming to the remains of the old Sakai River. The quiet waterside speaks of the depth of memory, and I wonder why it was left unburied. I arrived at Nishida Kanayama Shrine. This shrine was enshrined as the house god of swordsmiths, and the peeling paint and weathered stone monuments are imbued with the time that has passed since it was abandoned by humans. As I walked along the border of the city, I saw a seam of time that was not on the map. It was because I had walked there that I had truly come into contact with something.
