郡の寂しく寒い片隅にある、ほとんど廃墟となったキアンブの町々を訪ねた
Well, I’m somewhere in Kimbo County and I want to visit the most remote village town in the county and to do that I have to choose the road that is less traveled. So this is Gatundo North one of the 12 constituencies in Kamu County. Another fun fact, it is also the most rural followed by another one called Lari. So basically today we are visiting the most remote town in the most remote constituency in Kamu County. But there’s a catch. Despite it small size and being remote, it is one of the most industrialized town in the county. We’ll be getting there in a few. The road is not so nice. It is also a very cold place and I’m sure you can see that it is a T-zone. So the primary cash crop here is tea and pineapples. So this is a highly productive area in terms of agriculture and business. It also seems like wood is another cash crop here. It is being sold right, left and center. So this is the mighty River Chania and I want to show you something real quick before we get to the town. I also need to take a sip of cold water from the sauce. I’m sure the water here is in its purest form. The Abadas which is the source is some few kilometers away. This trip is proudly sponsored by a getaway hidden gem, the Tamaris Hotel. It is nestled on the shores of central Kenya’s on freshwater lake, Lake Oloat and overlooking the majestic Abadia ranges. So looking for a solo getaway or planning a group event, they’ve got you covered with spacious grounds, a good roasting zone, and custom setups for family, corporate, and team building retreats. This peaceful getaway offers a farm to fork dining experience from organic veggies, fresh dairy, freerange potry, and even sheep and goats. All raised right here on the property. Let’s the kid play, enjoy some games, or take a peaceful stroll by the lake. It is the perfect blend of nature, comfort, and adventure. Come discover this hidden gem, the Tamaris Hotel, where fresh food, stunning views, and unforgettable memories await. Change of plans. There’s no way I’m drinking that water. It is too cold. Trust me. So, this is one of the major tributaries of Cha River. So this is the river that is near the town if you’ve been there and I can assure you that most of this water will end up in most of homesteads in the town. I’m not quite sure what are those white things the two pillar like stuff or what are they measuring there is another significant importance of the China river and that is it marks the proverbial boundaries between Kiamu and Moranga counties I’m sure most of the oldtimers especially those of us who are around when Kinata the the first Kinata was the president and the mighty Kimu mafia I mean those surrounding the presidency had shown that the leadership will never go past China river now this point but that was broken when Kbaki became the third president of the republic of Kenya. So, let’s get to the town and cross the proverbial cha bridge. I’m in the outskirt of a small town. It is some 20 m from here. After this corner, we’ll be seeing it. And our small village town for the day goes by the name Matara. You can see the small town’s gas station on my left. Quite small but very significant in the economy of this town. Remember I told you that the town is highly industriized and one of the industries that the towns dominate in Kamu County and this region especially the upper Nairobi region is the mat industry. I’m sure if you live in towns like Riru Vika Kikuyu Wangig Leuru you probably know this Matusako that goes by the name Matara. It dominates in most of these towns and this is their home. This is Matara. You can see it is just a small lonely town perfect for Mr. Lone Traveler and as usual I want to take you around the small town and see whether it is dead or alive. Is it worth its name? You know, the Matu investors from this town have really tried to sell the name of the town outside here. And so, I’m looking for a road that will take me to the town center. I can see the town is mostly on my left. We will drive around and see how businesses are fairing. How are the buildings? Are they modern or super old? I will also be giving you the numbers, the town statistics. So far, I can see beautiful businesses on my left. A mali shop, a butchery. I can also see an alcohol joint. It seems like everyone in town is catered for except for the road. It is the worst. I’m not quite sure whether I’ll go past this point. No way I’m going past this point. I have to look for another route that will take me to the town center. Forcing myself to go past that point might bring me a lot of trouble. and you don’t go looking for trouble in a new town. As I try to reroot, I’m sure you can see the market on my right. The first construction site on my right is the proposed modern market for Matara. So, of course, that is the government project. But in the meantime, let me take this opportunity to welcome you to our YouTube channel, Village to Town TV. A channel that is dedicated to continue showcasing beautiful villages, towns, and cities across the continent of Africa. So today we are doing the village town edition. So make sure you subscribe, like the video, and comment. Just tell us what do you think about this small town and have you ever been here? If yes, when? If no, have you ever heard about this small town? I’m sure you can now clearly see the new market on my right. It is a proposed story building. And I don’t know what you think about this proposed market. They are all over, especially in these small towns. But for this town, I feel like the project is ahead of it time. So far so good. I can spot a few oldtimes in the small cold town. I tell you what, it is freezing here. This is the Mat Circle I was telling you about a while ago. I don’t know whether you can read it. It is written matara. If you have never boarded one of those, trust me, you have never been in Kiamu County. Well, the road is super gorgeous. Well done. I’m sure you have seen that. It is well tarmacked and wellmaintained. Kudos to the government. So, I want to turn right. I’m told that there’s a road that will take me to the town center. I can see it is a very narrow road. I hope I’ll not meet any trouble like I did a few minutes ago. So, the small town has a total population of 4,000 365 people. Quite a small town. 2,226 of these are males while 2,139 are females. And that simply tells you that the town has a male majority. Well, to put it into percentage, it means that 51% of the aggregate population living in town are males while only 49% are females. Well, the gap is not that big, only 2%. in favor of men which is very rare especially in Kenya. Most towns either small or big have female majority. In terms of the population density the town has 429 people living in a square kilometer. I can see some oldtimers are having a good time on my left. Probably there’s a bar here. Not a milk bar, of course. Anyways, let’s continue with the exploration of the town. So, most buildings here are super old. I’m sure you can see that probably 60 or 70 years old. And I can see some shops are closed. Probably business is not doing so well here. I can’t even spot a single new unit. But I’m sure the proposed new market will change the town look forever. What is this wooden structure though? Is it a hotel? A butchery? Anyways, you can see the proposed modern market on my right. There are other extended wooden structures on my left. And it seems like the town has that culture of converting verandas into premises. And I have a strong feeling that those are aqua joints. Well, so far so good. The town has that small old town vibe. There’s a nice village hotel here. A few oldtimes here and there. I think I’m in love with the place. There’s a supermarket here on the corner. It’s going by the name Joy Mat Supermarket. Probably the owner is the biggest investor in town. And that is a positive thing. Of course, I can only imagine how cold this guy passing by with a t-shirt is feeling. He must be the strongest dude in town. Or maybe he’s used to it. I can also spot another tiny fueling station. I’m also sure you can see a factory ahead. You can see some chimneys, right? That is Matara tea factory. I told you this is a town of investors. Very industrious people. So on my right is the tea factory and one of the things that you should note about the tea economy is that most of these factories are purely owned by farmers. And so they operate as a form of cooperative societies. And so you can imagine how many people such factories employs either directly or indirectly. And that tells you one thing that this is not your average broke village. You know they say that the tea industry contribute up to 2% of the agricultural GDP in the country. OST is among the leading foreign exchange earner contributing about 23% of the total foreign exchange earning in the country. So believe me when I say this is a rich village although the road has nothing to show for it but can villagers constructs road for themselves? Of course you know the answer. So probably the main problem here is on leadership cuz both the people in the land are very productive. Did I tell you that they also produce a lot of pineapples? Yes, they do. I want to turn around cuz if I continue this way, I’ll be hitting Manga County in a few minutes probably less than five. I told you this is the corn town in Kamu County also the last town. So this is G north constituency and on the other side is Gatanga constituency which is the southernmost constituency in Moranga county. If I go straight on my right, the Abadas, which is one of the biggest water catchment areas in the country, is very near and that tells you that Nandaro County is also very close. I know now you know where the cold is coming from. I want to give you a few statistics as far as the constituency is concerned and that is Gatundo North remember Matara is one of the towns in Gatun North constituency so the constituency has a total population of 109,870 people that is as of 2019 general census that was the peak population 10 years earlier the constituency had a population of 106,000 only. So it means that in 10 years the constituency only added 3,000 people. Well, that’s a very small growth. It means that the annual population change is only 0.32% per year. In terms of the population density, the area is sparsely populated. As there are only 384 people living in a square kilometer. In terms of gender distribution, 50.7% are females while 49.3% are males. Only three people in the entire constituency identifies as interex. Another factor that really caught my attention as far as the numbers are concerned is on age distribution. 7.8% of the people living in the constituency are the oldtimers. That is people aged 65 and above. Well, let me leave the stage at that. But please continue watching the scenic video until the end. Change of plans, am not drinking that water. Not in it's purest form as I thought, TRUST ME.🤣🤣🤣
Mataara is a scenic green landscape unfortunately though the deplorable and dilapidated road infrastructure betrays it
Super gorgeous road, kudos to gava. You sarcastic bastard. 😆😆😆
Right at the boundary of Murang'a and Kiambu counties, Chania River.
Even before they (motor. bikes) crossed Chania, they had detoured all the way to faraway Baringo.
Thanks for showing me mataara town. I was a teacher at mataara sec school in 1987 and haven't gone back. Very forested then.
The chania river crossing which was so much hyped by kiambu mafia is the one passing Thika town. The town is in kiambu and the wealthiest company in kenya Del monte across the river is in Muranga.
Thanks for the update. You crossed Karimenu river from Gakoe.Avacado farming is doing well. 🎉
All these places you take us are very green and seem like good places to retire. Thanks Mr. Lone Traveler 🙏
Am sure hiyo mto umevuka ni Karimenu sio Chania
