【京都・祇園祭2025】宵山“ほぼ全部山鉾網羅”!幻想と熱気に包まれた京の夜へ
Hello, everyone. This is Yugo from THE KYOTO. Today is July 15th. I’m at the Gion Festival. It’s a pedestrian-only day. It’s Yoimatsuri (the eve of the festival). Wonderful. It’s already quite late… It’s around 9:30 PM… There are considerably fewer people now. Therefore, it’s easy to film. That’s why I came to film at this time. So, the number of people is about half of the peak time… Gion Festival, Yoimatsuri… enjoy it everyone. Let’s start filming. This is the Shijo Kasamatsuri. It’s the Shijo Kasamatsuri. It’s a smaller type. Beautiful. Here’s a description of the Yamaboko… written here. Shijo Kasamatsuri. If you don’t know how to read it, look for signs like this… and you’ll find… the name and description written there. If you don’t understand, please… read it. So, in this pedestrian paradise… during Yoimatsuri and Yoimayomatsuri… people who come here should be careful because… some streets… are one-way streets. Like here, the wider streets are… not one-way. Narrow streets may be one-way. Everyone, be careful. A little while ago… there was a Yamaboko when I turned left… but let’s check out the famous places along Shijo Street first… and then… we’ll go down the narrow streets. This is… What is this? How do you read this mountain’s name? This… How do you read the name of this mountain? How is this mountain called? When you don’t know, look for a sign. Oh, beautiful. It’s very beautiful. Very beautiful. But since there aren’t many people… it’s quite… easy to see the Yamaboko slowly. If you want to take your time and see the Yamaboko, coming between 9 and 10 AM… might be good. There it is, a sign. Kakujuyama It seems to be read as Kakujuyama. Kakujuyama. Generally, the origins of this Yamaboko seem to be rooted in China… it seems. It’s written here. Well, there are still more. There are more than 10 Yamaboko. I don’t remember the exact number, but there are more than 10. It will probably take 40 to 50 minutes to see them slowly… I think. But there are still quite a lot of people. Even so, the number of people has decreased considerably. Oh, there it is. This is the one-way street I was talking about. Walking is also one-way. This is it, here. These narrow streets… are one-way. That’s why we have to take a detour, and we can’t see the back. Exactly. You can enter from this side, but you can’t go from the back to the front. This narrow street is one-way. It’s 9:30 AM, and there are so many people. And, there’s one more thing to note. The roads are one-way on the right and left. So, when you look at this float… first… you have to go to the back and make a U-turn to come back. Because it’s one-way… but, it looks like you can take a great picture from here, and… let’s take a picture. Is this the Tsukibō (Moon Float)? It’s the Tsukibō! Tsukibō By the way, this upper part… you can go up there. This part. You can go up. I think it was 1000 yen for the Tsukibō? For the Tsukibō, both men and women… can go up, but… Naginata-boko… and one more… only men can… go up sometimes. I also made a video of the Hiki-hajime (first pulling) of the Kandaya-boko. Kandaya-boko and… look, it says “Keep Left”. Keep Left. And… this is… the Kikusui-boko, the one you see in the back. This. The one you see in the back is the Kikusui-boko. The one you see in the back… is the Tori-boko (Chicken Float). Tori-boko. This is it… the one in the center of the screen. It’s one-way, so you can’t enter. If you want to go, you have to go around from the back. So, first of all… let’s look at the Kandaya-boko. Oh… Nice. lol. This is the Kandaya-boko. The hayashi (music)… is being played. And, this Kandaya-boko also… if you pay some money, you can go up. I think it was 1000 yen. Both men and women can go up the Kandaya-boko. You can see it this way. Women can also ride on top of the Kandaya-boko. It’s written here, but… well, there are some… that women can’t go up. This place is called Kandaya-boko-cho, and the name of the town uses the words Kandaya-boko, and it’s also written on the lanterns. It’s beautiful. Naturally, buses don’t run here either. If you come here in the 7 o’clock hour, a lot of people gather. It’s now 9:30 AM, and it’s finally reduced to half. Even half is this much, so imagine it doubled. And… let’s go to the Tsukibō… before… First, the Naginata-boko. Oh. Something… Students are fighting. Now then. What you see ahead is always the first to walk… in the Yamaboko Junko parade of the former festival. That’s the Naginata-boko. The Naginata-boko… To ride it, I think you can go up and ride if you buy an amulet or Naginata-boko goods. Regarding the Naginata-boko, unfortunately, women cannot ride it. Only men can ride. Why is that? If you know, please write it in the comments section. They’re not selling goods anymore, so you can’t go up now. This is the Naginata-boko. Naginata-boko A moment ago, I said that the Naginata-boko is the first to walk, to run, in the former festival’s parade… The order of the Yamaboko is decided by lottery. However, there are some… that have a fixed order, so they don’t draw lots. One of them is this… Naginata-boko. There’s a naginata on the top. This, is the Naginata-boko. Amazing. These lantern lights are lit using electricity generated during the day by the roof-integrated solar panels. This, the top seems to be solar panels. Amazing. It says monochrome. Amazing, high-tech. And, this is also one-way traffic on the left side. Until you go a little further, you cannot enter… on the right side here. You can’t enter. Now then, we’ll make a U-turn here. Around here, along the main street, there are convenience stores… only around here, I think? From here along the main street, I think… you won’t find one unless you walk 4 or 5 minutes, so those who want to buy drinks at the FamilyMart earlier, please buy them at that FamilyMart. If you go into the narrow side streets, there are quite a few convenience stores, but along this main street, there aren’t actually many convenience stores. It might rain, so covers have been put on. We’ll make a U-turn and head towards the Tsukiboko next. If you watch this video, probably… you’ll understand how to efficiently go around the Yoimatsuri… the most efficient way to go around the Yamaboko arrangement. I think you’ll understand. What you see across is… the Funtoko which we filmed earlier. The Funtoko also doesn’t actually draw lots… It’s a boko. During the Yamaboko Junko, it always runs second… It’s a boko that always runs second. We can’t go this way, so for the Nidoriboko… we’ll look at the Tsukiboko… turn left… and take a slightly longer route. Tsukiboko. This is the Tsukiboko. Nice. The Tsukiboko too… if you buy a ticket… you can enter. However, the Tsukiboko tickets… sell out pretty quickly. They’re usually gone by around 8 o’clock. It’s so beautiful, this. Moreover, this… the lantern lights and the moon go well together, don’t they? Many people from overseas… have come and… are taking lots of pictures. I’m glad. In this way, Japanese culture… It’s wonderful that it reaches the world. Now then, we’ll turn left here… Which boko… I’m not quite sure. After seeing one or two floats… we’ll head towards the Toriyama float. Yakisoba. No, when you talk about Gion Matsuri’s pedestrian paradise…this is it… many food stalls… It has a great atmosphere. Maeda’s Baby Castella. Every time, only Maeda’s Baby Castella has an incredibly long line. There’s an unbelievably long queue here. If you come to the Gion Matsuri, I really recommend you try Maeda’s Baby Castella before you leave. I was born in Kyoto and grew up in Kyoto… Maeda’s Baby Castella… still… I still don’t understand why there’s such a long line. It’s always too long… the line is so long that… I’ve never actually eaten one. Both exist. Here too… there are floats… and there are floats over there. And… there are floats ahead, too. Which route to take. The Funayama float! This is my favorite one. The Funayama float is so cool. I saw it last year. The float is shaped like a ship… It’s… just like its name. Beautiful. The float is shaped like a ship. They’re also allowing viewing of the Funayama float. 1000 yen. This is probably… accessible to both men and women. Safe childbirth prayers. Those who are giving birth pray for a safe delivery… a charm, the Funayama float’s… safe childbirth charm. Here, this… upper… passageway allows you to get on here. Beautiful. Further in, too. This is… Once you go through here, you can’t go back. One way street. Please be careful. Wow. There’s a float over here, too… Let’s go this way for now. This is… It seems pretty difficult to see everything without fail. This is… a mountain, this is. Iwatoyama. This is Iwatoyama. This is beautiful, too. This is a mountain, but it’s quite large. Speaking of mountains, it’s a little… smaller image, but… This is quite large. It seems you can climb up here too. This viewing fee is 500 yen cheaper. All the places we were at before were 1000 yen. Cheap. So, it was a one-way street. This way… is it accessible? That previous road was just a one-way street, but this road isn’t a one-way street. I think. Looks delicious. That yakisoba looks delicious. Now, from here… The road ahead is one-way and we can’t go back. For now, it’s one-way. Let’s go this way for now. Tokusa-yama? Tokusa-yama. This is… Tokusa-yama. All the Yamaboko… …look cool with these lanterns. Eh, but somehow… a little… …the volume is lacking, Tokusa-yama. It’s rude to say such things, so let’s stop that. But, pine cones are decorating it. This is Tokusa-yama. The lights are already going out. Hakurakuten-yama? Hakurakuten… Gyaku gakuten? How do you read this? The lantern isn’t even lit. It’s good that there are fewer people late at night, but the lanterns go out. It seems to be Hakurakuten-yama. Hakurakuten-yama. Wow. Isn’t this the Toriyamaboko? I think this is the Toriyamaboko, but… …even the Toriyamaboko’s lights are out. The Toriyamaboko too… …the time came, and the lights went out. This is Toriyamaboko. Oh dear. Let’s film this again tomorrow. Let’s film the Kikusuiyamaboko last and end today’s video. No, for something truly THE KYOTO, we can’t say something so easy. Let’s walk around the north side and look at a few more… …before we end. We were just on the south side. From Shijo Street, we were walking around the south side… …casually. Next, Shijo Street… …north side… …let’s walk. Shijo Street, north side. The first one is… …the Kikusuiyamaboko. The Kikusuiyamaboko’s lights are still on. The line on the right is… …Maeda’s baby castella. It’s incredibly long. Kikusuiyamaboko. I want to go, but I have to U-turn. This is the Tsukiboko we saw earlier. This is… …the Kango-boko we saw earlier. Next, we’ll go to the Kikusuiyamaboko. The Kikusuiyamaboko is also in the Ho-hiki Hajime video… …of… …the beginning of the float procession. Kikusuiyamaboko! You can also go up on this one. This is the Kikusuiyamaboko. Something’s attached to the top. What is that white thing? If anyone knows, please comment. Yes. Various things appeared again. Next is Yamabushiyama. I wonder how you read that. By the way, I’ve been to the Gion Matsuri’s… …Yo-yo-yama and Yo-yama… …more than 10 times in my life. I still can’t read the names of all the Yamaboko. Roten Jin-yama Yamabushiyama. This is… Urayama? Oh no, all the lights are off. This… Only these lights are on. Let’s go this way for now. Now, what do you read this as? Fortune-telling… Urayama. Oh, here too. From earlier, it’s read as Urayama. It seems to be Urayama. On Karasuma Street… we came across this. This Karasuma Street is the most… bustling street with many food stalls. There’s one Yamaboko here. Only half… only half the lanterns are lit. What Yamaboko is this? This this is… Mosozan It seems to be called Mosozan. Mosozan Half the lanterns are off. And there’s a bit of a blue tarp over it. Why is that? It’s raining. Cotton is attached. It’s attached to a tree with cotton. Now, this is a place where there are a lot of young people. Both sides are… a street surrounded by food stalls. It’s past 10 o’clock, so the food stalls are starting to close. It’s amazing… this once-a-year, this Yoimatsuri, Yoioyama… these two days only are pedestrian paradises. There are so many people. Let’s go in this direction next. I found Kamakiriyama. Kamakiriyama really has a praying mantis on top of the mountain. Also, during the procession, the mantis’s scythe moves. This is also interesting during the procession, so if you all find it during the mantis procession, please take a look. Wow… I got caught by a friend. Yamabushiyama. We’re heading north. While walking around the Gion Matsuri… I was born and raised in Kyoto, so I meet friends, you know. And while I was talking to that friend… it’s already past 11 o’clock, and… the pedestrian paradise is completely over. Oh. Amazing atmosphere… place. Oh, this one’s lights are off. Before, too. Dim lanterns… There are a lot. It’s already past 11 pm. Even though it’s… Oh, that’s right, it’s past 11 pm, so one-way streets and things are gone now. After 11 pm, it seems easier to shoot. But the festival atmosphere isn’t really conveyed. Don’t you think this atmosphere is really nice, with these Kyoto streetscapes… with lanterns on both sides… isn’t it really nice, this? Oh! Hoko discovered! Finally, let’s take a look at this Hoko for a bit, and end today’s video. What Hoko is it, I wonder? It looks like a Hoko, but… not a Yama. The lights aren’t on, but… This is… It’s a Hōraku-hoko. It’s already past 11 pm, and it’s a little disappointing that the lights aren’t on, but still, this has its own charm. For those who can only come during the daytime… I think it’s rare. The people who can stay in this Karasuma area of Kyoto past 11 pm… must be few, unless they’ve come from far away. The lights are off here, and the Hōraku-hoko… seems rare. Hōraku-hoko. The time is 11:20 pm. So, it’s amazing. Amazing, even at night. It’s a yukata shop. Good, this feeling. So, how was today’s video? Wow, the Gion Matsuri, the Yoimachi, or is it Yoimachi-machi today? The pedestrian parade was really impressive. There are so many people. No, it was truly amazing. By the way, the pedestrian parade just ended, but when I started filming, I think it was still going on. This is the place right after it began. This is the place right after the video began. Now the pedestrian parade is over. Cars are driving. The Gion Matsuri is like this. Even Yoimachi-machi is now calm. Look, the Tsukibōko’s lights are also off. So, I’ll end today’s video here. If you liked today’s video, please like and subscribe to the channel. Comments also encourage me to make videos, so thank you for those as well. When writing comments, please write in your native language. You don’t have to force yourself to write in Japanese, it’s okay. Please write in your native language. So, I’d like to end today’s video here, while showing the Tsukibōko. Thank you all very much. Goodbye.
