the name this water refilling station so you see here I think they are selling water welcome to Gandhi Africa’s Venice on water tucked away on the shimmering waters of Lake Naku just outside Kotonu Benin lies a village like no other ganvi the largest floating village in Africa a place where life flows through the rhythm of the water ganvi is a breathtaking blend of tradition resilience and beauty ganvi was established in 17th century it was founded by the Tofino people an ethnic group in southern Benin it is estimated that about 20,000 residents live on Ganwi according to Wikipedia and travel sources the most frequently cited figure for the number of houses in Gandhi is over 3,000 stilted buildings including schools hospitals restaurants bars shops and art galleries here homes don’t sit on land instead they stand proudly on stilts rising from the lake in a maze-like layout that looks like a wooden city floating on the horizon built generations ago these houses are more than architecture they are symbols of survival and identity the waves crush the stilts canoes crush the waves boats are everything in Gandi boats are life they are how kids get to school how people go for shopping and how families visit friends there are no cars no streets just peaceful canels that went through the village like watery alleyways simply village like on the waters of Lake Naku these floating markets bring the whole village together as a community these are not only shops that are floating these are commerces businesses these are opportunities to make families meet the name Ganvi itself means we survived a powerful reminder of the strength and ingenuity of its people one reason why you will love Gandhi gandhi is a vibrant it’s peaceful it’s rich in culture and it’s a reminder of how people can create harmony with nature whether it’s the echo of children’s slather over the water or the smell of fresh fish on a smoky grill Ganvi is an experience you will never forget although built on water Ganvi is beautiful colorful and welldesigned it has everything you need from schools to bars ganvi is not the only one of its kind in West Africa here is Makoko floating village in Lagos which won the reputation of being the most crowded and dirtiest floating village there is also Nuzles a wonderful floating village in Ghana this village is smaller amongst the three so hit play and come with me on a journey through this magical floating village don’t forget to like comment and subscribe for more untold stories from around the world so we have just arrived to Ganvi Gan Kavi Ganvi and here there is a office and but we have our own uh tour guide we arranged herman do you want to be on the video is okay for you okay so you’ll be our tour guide right so you’ll show us Ganvi what are we going to see you want to go to see Gvier in Gambia venice African the African Venice I can already see the boats so let’s go let’s go on the jetty we’re looking for our boat they seem to be more stable than those in Makoko they are bigger so I think I hope it’s not going to be this scary but there is still quite a lot of people but I don’t see the village at all like I don’t know there’s like a lot of grass but the village So we got we got a boat we’re taking which one this one there okay so we are ready to go let’s board okay let’s go let’s go okay thank you but we are just I think we are just crossing this boat and then we’re going to go to the next one it’s a bit shaking so we’re crossing to another boat this is this is ours this we going to take this okay let me just let me just sit here shall I go more in the back okay let me go more in the back i guess some of the people have to do this every day and let’s sell away so let’s go we are on the way passing some kind of dried grass i don’t know maybe um so this uh this is actually I’ve been inco in Legos Nigeria and uh the the people there are actually What are we going to see in Dongi oh so you want to see you can see your restaurant market place so like here this is like the jetty that’s where people when they want to go to mainland that’s where they get the boat and the village is somewhere here so Gandi is like a village okay so how far is it do you know how far uh 30 minutes 30 minutes wow and the people who So the people who live there they can go to work and they go to school or they have school there there is a school okay so there’s school is there like hospital oh you have hospital outside they have everything they can be all the way there all the time wow 30 minutes but then if anytime you want to go to mainland we’ll see i already see that we are approaching the village right here so the village it’s on the it’s all on the water or there is a there’s an island oh you have a water in island okay so there’s a little bit of firm land okay we’ll explore it look at these houses already they’re so cool how did they actually even get it here they had to transport all the everything and like look this some of the houses are big like look look at this one what uh so here is what a restaurant yeah look at the beautiful colors so first we are arriving to the marketplace this this is the marketplace and I was asking you actually how much the transport back to mainland cost and I was telling him like uh when you go for a bar or something and they have everything here there’s a bar everything is here so but anyways this transport cost 500 to get to Ganvi and back for the locals i don’t know for the for the foreigners we have the whole tour so we stopped here there is like a marketplace they have hotel art center look at the masks so what kingdom is this mask this is uh uh elephant the one elephant kingdom yes so each mask represent a different kingdom so those two have a from I think I like the these ones the most turtle but those are just for tourists there’s a tourist this is for voodoo these statues this is for voodooity oh okay these boots wow where land in here also wow this big house yeah that’s a very big house and the lighting something here they don’t want they don’t want pictures but yeah look they’re transporting something so uh we have to be careful if people don’t want to be on the picture then we have to This place is palace palace royal Royal Palace this one it seems it’s it’s a bit tilted the house is like “What happened?” It’s like do you know do you know the the tower pizza in in Italy the pizza tower looks like this look a floated market so here people come on the boats and they trade oh you come to this area sell tomatoes so where do they get the where do they get the tomatoes from go to Karavi oh everything comes from the mainland do they do they produce anything here no no so what do the people do they they they fish the fish and then they sell the fish to the mainland [Music] what is this uh artisanal home artisan home okay but it’s like uh new it’s not yet opened so this is for there’s a lot and then they’re bringing so how did this uh how did this village started like why come here because like the people there was for the by the by the fisherman it was a fisherman so they came here to fish and then they started building houses or so this is men go to cap fish you sell women these women go to sell in markets the the men go to fish yeah yeah and whatever they catch they give it to the women and the women go to the market and then then transport it to mainland ex oh I see from now and then I don’t know if you can see it but there is some machine running there’s some engine there is a bit of industry i also saw another place where they are probably grinding something so the people come here but I don’t know where do they get the water from look he’s he puts the hose it’s not a hose it’s a pipe and then I cannot figure out where is the water from okay we’re going to explore this kind of little piece of it’s probably an artificial island we have to had to bring all of the scent all of the soil i can hear some some music so some church music so there’s definitely a church there is supposed to be 11 celestial churches on this Ganvi so here there is the there’s a statue of the king herman that’s the king no no that’s not the king no who what is that divinity divinity divinity voodoo huh divinity or voodoo the voodoo ah okay everywhere you go in Africa they just the kids just hold your hand and then they’ll follow you what’s your name your name 99 Paul Paul you’re Paul this is the pump for the water I don’t know where is it where is the where is the storage but then from here they pump it and we’re there must be some church say hi say bun [Music] Okay let’s go let’s go oh the statue of the king [Music] we’re leaving this church look at this building and here there’s a lot of people i think they they’re going to do some performance cuz people have the same clothes the uniform look here there is a mosque [Music] so here we are at your home which one this one this one in front should we go so we are riding back to the to the jetty with the last moments of the Ganvi village it’s so beautiful look hello Bonjour mazelle they built everything on the water and they even built like the whole the land and the big those built buildings wait sweet it’s very very sweet [Music] good you finished the canv [Music] the the boat is shaking
