Walking around Shoin Shrine Current location: Setagaya, Tokyo We leave Gotokuji Temple and head towards Shoin Shrine, but stop by Shokokuji Temple on the way. It’s a new gate. It looks like it’s been renovated. Please subscribe to our channel. We need your help to keep this channel running. Next door is Kokushikan University. Most of the buildings were destroyed in air raids and were rebuilt after the war. Ancient documents were also lost in air raids, so it seems the records are unknown. It seems to date back to 1554, so it must be over 500 years old. Kokushikan University. I don’t have a very good image of it. We have arrived at Shoin Shrine. This shrine enshrines Yoshida Shoin, a man from the late Edo period. Yoshida Shoin was executed as a terrorist and the mastermind behind a plot to assassinate the senior councilor. He trained many disciples who were involved in the anti-government movement of that time. Because he succeeded in overthrowing the government, the rebels became the winners and he is worshipped as their teacher. In the end, it’s just a power struggle. The winner writes history. Yoshida Shoin was executed in 1859 and reburied here four years later in 1863. It was already enshrined during the Edo period, and as a result was destroyed once by the Tokugawa forces. It was later established as a shrine in 1882. He is an important figure who always appears in discussions of the Meiji Restoration, so he is very popular. This is a reconstruction of the Matsushita Village School that was located in Hagi. I had heard that the lecture room was small, but it is much smaller than I had imagined. The part taught by Yoshida Shoin lasted two years and ten months, with around 90 students. Of these, four have become prime ministers. That’s all for today. Thank you for watching.
