和倉温泉は1200年の歴史を持つ温泉地で、元々は円山の湯の谷に湧いていましたが、地殻変動により海中に湧き口が移動しました。漁師の夫婦が見つけ、それが”涌浦”と命名。1611年に加賀藩二代藩主前田利長が治療のために使ったことから広まりその後、前田利常により、湯治客が利用しやすいように湯島が造られ、涌浦は賑わうように。1674年には、書き間違えやすい”涌浦”から”和倉”に改名。その後の埋め立てと開発により、多くの旅館や施設が建てられ、遠くからも湯治客が訪れるようになったそう。明治時代には村の共有地とされ、湯島までの埋め立てが進み、陸続きになりました。そして、ドイツで開催された万国鉱泉博覧会で和倉の温泉が三等賞を受賞し世界に広まりました。
