Japanese Castles to Visit Before You Die Matsue Castle Matsue Castle is located in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. The surviving tenshu (main tower) is designated as a national treasure, and the castle ruins are designated as a national historic site. Perched atop Mount Kameda at an elevation of 29 meters, it overlooks Lake Shinji. In the early Meiji period, it was scheduled for dismantling under the Castle Abolishment Edict, but the main tower was repurchased by local enthusiasts and spared from demolition. In recent years, the ninomaru (second bailey) turret has been reconstructed, restoring the castle’s appearance. The castle’s tenshu has an outer appearance of four stories, five stories internally, and one underground floor, built in the style of a tenshu with a turret. Interesting architectural features include the hipped roof and widely used through pillars in the east-west buildings. Visiting Matsue Castle offers not only the opportunity to appreciate its historical value and scenic beauty, but also a chance to experience local culture and traditions. Be sure to pay a visit at least once.
