奥会津の夏紀行🚣神秘の霧幻峡と只見線の美しき風景|瀞流の宿かわち|福島
Hello everyone! I’m Naru. This time, we’re in a secluded region where Japan’s unspoiled landscapes remain. We’ve come to Okuaizu in Fukushima Prefecture! Fukushima Prefecture is divided by the Ou Mountains and the Abukuma Highlands from west to east into the “Aizu,” “Nakadori,” and “Hamadori” regions. It’s split into these three areas! In the western Aizu area, you’ll find Tsurugajo Castle, with its historic castle town atmosphere, and Ouchijuku, a preserved post town from the Edo period. There are also the prefecture’s symbols, the magnificent Mount Bandai and Lake Inawashiro. It’s packed with the charm of history and grand nature!! The central Nakadori area is home to the prefectural capital, Fukushima City, and the commercial city of Koriyama. It thrives as a transportation hub, with the Tohoku Shinkansen running through it. The eastern Hamadori area, facing the Pacific Ocean, has popular leisure facilities like “Spa Resort Hawaiians” and a variety of open, spacious tourist spots! From among all the charms of Fukushima Prefecture, this time we’ll travel even deeper into the Aizu area, to explore Okuaizu. First, something that’s essential to talk about this place is the JR Tadami Line, which runs along the beautiful Tadami River. The JR Tadami Line. This line connects Aizu-Wakamatsu Station in Fukushima Prefecture with Koide Station in Niigata Prefecture. It’s a scenic route of about 135 km. Reflecting its beautiful arches on the river surface, the First Tadami River Bridge is one of many scenic spots that relentlessly attract many photography enthusiasts and tourists from all over the world. The First Tadami River Bridge. Also, you can’t miss the Mugenkyo Ferry Crossing, which becomes beautiful like a dream or illusion when the river fog rolls in on summer mornings and evenings. It’s a must-see. The hand-rowed ferry, once a means of transportation for daily life, has been revived for tourism, inviting us into a fantastical landscape. It calls to us. ♪ Regarding access, from Tokyo to Koriyama Station. From Koriyama Station to Aizu-Wakamatsu Station. From Aizu-Wakamatsu Station, transfer to the JR Tadami Line to get to Okuaizu. We’ve arrived in Kaneyama Town, Fukushima Prefecture! This area is called Okuaizu, right? Take a look behind me! The Tadami River, Daishi Village, and the fog look so beautiful!! The fog was amazing just a moment ago, wasn’t it! The fog was spread out everywhere, and the village over there looked like it was floating. It looked just like Laputa: Castle in the Sky, didn’t it! The fog has cleared up a bit now, but it was incredibly beautiful earlier. It’s still beautiful now. ♪ Today, I’d like to travel through the town of Okuaizu. There’s an activity where you can cross the river by boat? We’re heading there now!! You can also enjoy watching the JR Tadami Line train run by. ♪ For 300 years, for the residents living here, the Tadami River ferry has been cherished as the sole means of transportation. The Tadami River ferry. Everyone, young and old, male and female, became a boatman, rowing across the fierce currents even on days of heavy rain or snow. The village was abandoned after a landslide in 1964, and its history once came to a close, but it was wonderfully revived in 2010 as the “Mugenkyo Ferry Crossing”! It’s incredibly beautiful, isn’t it? ♪ The fog keeps appearing and disappearing, you know? It’s so mystical. This… the wooden… The sound of the oar is so nice! The clinking sound it makes, that’s what’s good! With the walking tour plan, you can explore the abandoned village! It seems that sulfur was mined in the abandoned village! Koyasu Kannon (Child-rearing goddess statue). The Mugen Jizo statue was unharmed during the landslide! To the only remaining house. Boatman: Its characteristic feature is its L-shape. Boatman: This is the entrance, Boatman: and after entering, in this building, it’s on the right side. Boatman: On the right is where they kept horses and cows. Boatman: There was a stable there. Boatman: There are quite a few L-shaped houses, known as “Magariya,” around here. You can also look inside! The boat trip was fun, wasn’t it? It was amazing! So mystical! The fog really makes it special, right? And also, this river… There are no waves, so… the current is gentle, so we could enjoy it at a leisurely pace. ♪ I want to come in winter or autumn, too. The autumn leaves and snowy landscapes are said to be beautiful, so I want to ride it again! The Mugenkyo Ferry Crossing is closed during the winter!! A warm and welcoming interior. Wow, this is gorgeous! There are so many side dishes, and the presentation is so cute. Boiled chicken! I love boiled chicken. Mmm! Delicious!! It’s so tender, and this miso sauce goes perfectly with it! So it’s miso. Delicious! This rice is ginger rice! The ginger has a nice kick and it’s delicious. It goes well with the chicken, doesn’t it? This is a huge portion. It’s surprisingly large. I’m stuffed. And you can get refills on the rice! It even comes with dessert. Getting all this for ¥1,100 is a great deal, right? Up ahead, there’s a Tadami River viewpoint! I know that. Well then, shall we go? It’s about a 5-minute walk, apparently! I wonder where the best spot to see it is? Isn’t it the First Tadami River Bridge? There are three viewpoints! And guess what, a train is coming! At 2:23 PM! Let’s welcome the train here!! It’s an uphill walk! We’ve made it to the Second Tadami River Bridge! There was a spot higher than the first one, so we came up to the highest point here. The view is amazing, isn’t it? You can see the Tadami River and the bridge clearly from above. from above. That bridge is reflected on the water’s surface, and it’s lovely how it looks like there’s another bridge below it. It makes me worry that the train might get confused! I’m worried about it! (laughs) That’s true! So, we’ll wait for the train. I wonder if they saw me waving? Heading to our inn for tonight!! Located right next to the majestically flowing Tadami River, this charming onsen ryokan (hot spring inn) offers panoramic views of Okuaizu’s seasonal scenery from its guest rooms! The natural rock salt hot spring, which springs from a historic temple, is gentle on the skin and has excellent heat-retaining properties. You can heal both body and soul in the open-air bath made of hinoki cypress, with water flowing directly from the source. Open! Wow! Whoa! It’s huge! The view is incredible! Amazing. I can see the river. That’s the Tadami River, right? I can see the bridge and the temple too! Woooow!! It’s a river view! You can bathe while looking out at the Tadami River. ♪ The Akabeko key is so cute! Dinner is at 6:30 PM. I’ll have the basashi (horse sashimi)! It’s so red! With the sauce… Let’s eat! Mmm! It’s tender. So delicious!! What is it… It’s not too fatty, but the slight amount of fat is just right. Is it good? It’s great! A horse pun? (“uma” = horse / “umai” = delicious) So good! This sauce is really delicious! What is this? What kind of sauce is it? The texture is so soft and nice, horse meat is great! It’s not that tough. Horse meat is delicious! Aizu is famous for horse meat, right? Seems so! Delicious! First time having horse shabu-shabu! Let’s eat. Mmm! Yes, yes. What’s it like? The texture has more bite than pork. But… it’s more tender than bear meat! Delicious. It’s refreshing. Amazing! Maybe because it’s not fatty? It’s just so refreshing. It’s light and delicious. Delicious! It tastes like it would make you healthy! Delicious!! Morning-picked asparagus grown in Aizu. It’s this long! Mmm! Is it good? Yeah! It’s so sweet! Delicious. They said the salt was special too, right? It’s salt made by boiling down hot spring water! Delicious! It’s soft. The inside of the asparagus just melts out! Delicious! And pairing that with seasoned rice. The seasoned rice is full of flavor! And finally, Kozuyu. Aizu’s local dish, “Kozuyu.” So many ingredients! Look at all these ingredients! Such a gentle flavor! I could end every meal with kozuyu! Delicious!! It has so many different ingredients cut into small pieces. Salt-grilled ayu (sweetfish). Shrimp and avocado. Yanagizu mochi pork. We enjoyed our meal while looking at the Tadami River!! Dessert was a parfait. ♪ At night, we went to see fireflies on a hotel tour! You can feel the beauty of nature! There’s something nice about how ephemeral it feels. I never expected to be able to see fireflies, so I’m deeply moved. They’re so cute. There’s fog on the river! You’re right! It forms over here too! The river fog is so beautiful. The fog seems to be rolling from here towards the bridge. It wasn’t like this yesterday evening, was it? There was much less fog. So now, I’m happy to see so much fog. ♪ It’s truly magical when it’s foggy, isn’t it? That village over there… the village beyond the fog… It looks like it’s floating. Nice. Let’s take a walk and go get breakfast at the bakery! This is our strolling area. Ah! There’s something there!! There’s something there!! It’s huge! Apparently, Fukushima Prefecture has an agreement with Chansey! Chansey (ラッキー, ‘Lucky’) is said to bring happiness (福, ‘fuku’), which evokes Fukushima’s name! ♪ There was a Pikachu, too!! It seems Japanese dace (ugui fish) live here. ♪ I’ll try feeding the dace! Nobody’s coming!! Nobody’s coming!! Huh? Oh! They noticed! They noticed! Ah! They ate it! They ate it! Wow! They jump up to eat it! You’re right! They’re eating! They’re eating! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! They’re biting! Scary. Like piranhas. They’re coming like piranhas. So many have gathered!! This might be surprisingly fun!! Surreal… (laughs) There was a giant Akabeko! Yanagizu Town is the birthplace of the Akabeko!! Founded about 1,200 years ago, Enzoji Temple is known as one of Japan’s three great Kokuzo Bosatsu temples. Enzoji Temple in Yanagizu Town is famous as the birthplace of the Akabeko legend. During the construction of this temple, when transporting materials on the steep cliffs was extremely difficult, a herd of red cows appeared from nowhere and helped the people! While many cows and people collapsed from the harsh labor, it was a red cow that worked tirelessly until the very end. This moving legend is the origin of the Akabeko. Now for a quiz! What does “beko” in “Akabeko” mean? It means “cow.” Are you sure about that? Well, I’m not sure, but… Final answer? Yes. Are you sure? Excellent! You are correct!! It’s just what it sounds like! “Beko” is the word for “cow” in the Tohoku dialect! The Akabeko… its color also has various meanings! The red color is for warding off epidemics and evil spirits. The black spots on its body represent smallpox, an infectious disease that was prevalent in the Edo period. In hopes that if one got sick, it wouldn’t be severe, especially for children, there was a custom of giving Akabeko as gifts! There’s an Akabeko on top of the postbox!! So many delicious-looking breads!! An Akabeko bread!? Let’s eat! Isn’t this the ideal breakfast? I’ll have the toast! They say even the crust is “yakkoi”! “Yakkoi”? You mean soft? Aizu dialect: Yakkoi = Soft Let’s eat. It feels a bit springy. The way it tears, right? Delicious!! It’s so fluffy. But it has elasticity. A proper one. The aroma of the wheat… you can feel it directly. Delicious. The crust is soft too. It’s like a premium loaf of bread. This looks delicious on its own. You can tell without even eating it, right? Delicious. It was delicious on its own, but when you add something like this, the synergy makes it incredibly delicious!! This bread goes with anything. Probably. It would be delicious with anything on it!! And it’s delicious on its own. The deliciousness of the topping… I feel like it’s bringing it out. ♪ This is seriously delicious!! Should we buy some to take home? Yes! I want to buy some to take home! The toasted bread was delicious too. ♪ The temple was so big! The wooden main hall was amazing. It’s built on a cliff, so the view was incredible! We could see the river, the bridge, and the hotel, too. The view was great. But tripods weren’t allowed. And it seemed like filming was also not okay. Is the hot water famous? It comes from here, right? The hotel’s onsen is sourced from Enzoji Temple! This area must be a hot spring town, then. There are a lot of inns, too. And hot springs! This is nice! A Yanaizu specialty! A steamed bun with a dough of millet and glutinous rice, filled with red bean paste! What is this? The bun dough is different, isn’t it? From a normal one. It’s fluffy. It’s not dry and crumbly like a regular manju bun, right? Is it moist? It’s like glutinous rice! Delicious!! It’s packed with red bean paste inside. Maybe it’s a mix of glutinous rice and millet. Maybe so! Delicious. It’s sweet. Sweet and perfect for dessert!! A museum showcasing the works of world-renowned woodblock artist Kiyoshi Saito, who was from Aizu, Fukushima, and became a Person of Cultural Merit in 1995. He taught himself woodblock printing, and his unique style, which fuses ukiyo-e techniques with Western modernism, is highly acclaimed worldwide. Starting with his masterpiece series “Winter in Aizu,” he continued to charmingly depict the beautiful scenery of Aizu through the four seasons! It’s hard to believe this was made with woodblock prints! I was surprised that it has color, too. Color. I thought woodblock prints were just black and white, so I was surprised to see color! It was great! Because it’s simple, it was easy to understand! Even for someone like me who doesn’t usually look at art, I could feel it, you know? The “Winter in Aizu” series was really good. It’s made with just black and white, which fits perfectly, doesn’t it! I felt the atmosphere. I felt a sense of loneliness, and the warmth of winter? I could feel its harshness too! I want to go to Aizu in the winter next time! Let’s go! Seeing the prints really made me think that! In the summer, the greenery and the river were so beautiful. The fog, too. The river fog was beautiful. The river fog was really great. The area around the temple, too! It was nice. ♪ It was fun to walk around, and there were lots of souvenirs. The town really felt like an Akabeko town! There were Akabeko everywhere! They were so cute. Well then, shall we head back? I want to come back in winter! I want to try riding the Tadami Line next time! This time was a tour of scenic spots, but next time I want to ride it! Well then! Let’s go home! Thank you for watching!!
