Lined with century-old cedars, it houses more than 200,000 tombs of samurai, monks and illustrious personalities, all facing the Kūkai mausoleum, where the master is said to rest in eternal meditation. A stroll through its paths, punctuated with lanterns and Jizō statues, offers an experience that is both spiritual and captivating. The Jizō statue at Okunoin Cemetery in Koyasan is a depiction of Bodhisattva Jizō a figure revered in Buddhism for his compassion towards the souls of the departed, especially children, travelers and those in pain. Jizō statues found at Okunoin Cemetery are often adorned with red bibs or knitted hats, donated by grieving families or pilgrims in the hope that Jizō will protect the souls of the deceased. A trail of approximately 2 km winds through the forest. The atmosphere is particularly mystical, especially at sunrise or sunset. Many visitors choose to walk Okunoin at nightfall. as light filters through the branches of the towering cedars. The tombs are covered in moss and integrated into nature, giving a spiritual and timeless atmosphere. At the entrance to Danjo Garan, one of the sacred sites on Mount Koyasan in Japan, there are usually two imposing statues representing the Nio, or Kongō-rikishi (金剛力士). These guardian statues are protective deities in Buddhism, often placed at the entrance to temples to ward off evil spirits. Agyō (阿形) – It has an open mouth, symbolizing the sound “A” (the beginning of everything in Buddhist cosmology). It represents manifest strength and violence against evil. Ungyō (吽形) – It has a closed mouth, symbolizing the sound “One” (the end of all). It embodies latent strength and silent protection. Together they symbolize the duality of the universe and the protection of the temple against negative forces. The Danjo Garan is one of the most iconic sites in Koyasan. This vast complex is home to several majestic buildings, including the Konpon Daitō Pagoda, symbol of the union of heaven and earth, and the Kondō, the main room where Buddhist rituals are celebrated. The harmony of the architecture and the serenity of the place make it a must for any visit to Koyasan.
