Jerusalem of Italy, an Ancient City on a Giant Rock – Exploring Pitigliano, Toscana, Italia
Today we travel to an ancient city built on rock. This city has been called Little Jerusalem. Immerse yourself as if you’re acutally traveling! Today we travel to the southern region of Tuscany, Italy. There is a city here with a unique geography and history. Ancient city built on rock Pitigliano Pitigliano is built on a tuff cliff. It follows the natural shape of the cliff. The observation deck is long, providing a wide view. Above this arch is the Aqueduct. Built in the 16th century to supply water to the city. This place has been formed since the ancient Etruscan era. People carved out the tuff to make houses and roads. Entrance ‘Porta della Cittadella’ This is the arch aqueduct we saw earlier. Seven Springs (Fontana delle Sette Cannelle) A place with many tourists. There is also a big tree. There is a terrace where you can see the view. It’s longer than I thought. The houses built on the cliff are beautiful. The donkey and the farmer symbolize Pitigliano’s rural roots. Now let’s take a tour of Pitigliano. There are two paths. Left? Right? We’ll go in on the left and come out on the right. A street lined with medieval and Renaissance buildings. Pitigliano was called ‘Little Jerusalem’. In the mid-16th century, Jews hid here to escape religious persecution. By the 19th century, Jews made up about a quarter of the city’s population. Pitigliano has many beautiful staircases. The view is just the opposite cliff. There is a space like an observation deck. Of course, the view is the opposite cliff. We will see Pitigliano from the opposite side later. There is a Palestinian flag. Santa Maria and San Rocco Church. (Chiesa di Santa Maria e San Rocco) Built between the 12th and 13th centuries. Crests of the main families of Pitigliano Historians have determined that this is the oldest church in Pitigliano. Already almost at the end of the town. Pitigliano Cathedral A Roman Catholic cathedral built in the 13th century, dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul. There are many shops here. We finished walking around the village. Palazzo Orsini There’s a sundial. The Palazzo Orsini is currently used as a complex facility with a museum and exhibitions. Pitigliano Diocese. (Diocesi di Pitigliano) The museum is open.
