Tour of Contemporary Art of the WorldWe are traveling around the world to see contemporary art. This time, the Setouchi Triennale is going to Haruka Station. We left Ogishima and are now heading to Ugishima. It takes about 20 minutes from Ogishima to arrive on the island . The ticket to Ugishima is 240 yen one way. This is a map of the island. It is a small island with an area of about 2.6 km and a population of about 125 people. The artworks on Ugishima are concentrated near the port, so it is very easy to get around, but the cave artwork is on top of the mountain, so it is recommended to go by bus. Let’s start our tour of the art. The current time is 1:24 and the last train to Takamatsu Port is 5:20, so we have about 4 hours left to stay. Ugishima is also known as Onigashima, and there are several artworks with demon motifs. There are also statues of demons all over the island, and in the direction of the demons there is a large cave where the demons once had their base. We decided to tour from the east side in order. It’s been 3 years since I’ve been to Ugishima, and my mood is up. I walked with a sense of nostalgia and arrived in no time. It’s about a 5-minute walk from the port. We arrived at the first artwork. This is the new work this time. This is art by Tsun, and we are currently looking for residents for Anamachi, a project to increase the population of Ujishima. I went inside and saw a small apartment building. Looking closely, I saw some residents and some vacant buildings. Looking at each one, I saw various things living there, such as the blocks on the roadside and the familiar-looking eraser, the Me-no-oto that connects Takamatsu, Ujishima, and Ogishima. Anaguma is an ideal that the artist created in his childhood, and the people who live here are people he met during his stay on the island. There are small picture books in the residents’ rooms, and since they are all things that are familiar to us, we grow attached to each story. Further back, there is also an area with stone colons . Looking closely, you can see that each stone colon has a different face and shape, and it is a cute piece that looks like they are all chatting together. The next piece is located very close to the previous one, by Oda Motohiko. This is a work by Leandro Erlich. Kobo is a weapon of Jupiter in the koba world, and is like a ko carried by demons. When you go inside, there is a large statue holding a magnificent kobo. The face is made of polished copper, and the light reflecting off it makes a pattern appear on the wall. You can also see kobo of various shapes and kobo in the middle of construction, and it seems you can actually purchase one. This is a work that can only be seen on Ushima Island. Next is a work by world-famous artist Leandro Erlich, who is not an exaggeration to say that he fell in love with contemporary art when he first participated in the Setouchi Triennale . We have arrived. A quiet house, tucked away in love, is where the work is by Leandro Erlich. The existence of unmade materials, invisible. If you listen carefully, you can hear a crunching sound among the gravel. Can you relate to this? If you look closely, you can see people’s footprints. There is no one there, but you can feel someone’s presence from the footprints and footsteps. Another work is this tea room, the absence of a double tea room. This space also has a mysterious mechanism. It looks like there is a large mirror in the tea room, but in fact there is no mirror on one side. That’s right. In the back, there is another tea room. It is made slightly tilted so that it looks like a room moving to a mirror that is exactly the same as the performance. Guided by the mirrors and the mechanism of the structure, there is a moment when even your own existence becomes unclear, and a moment when you feel the presence of someone who should not be there. This work attracted me to contemporary art. It is one of the works that I would like everyone to come and experience. The next work is located in the same village as the absence of a double tea room. It is about a 2-minute walk to get there. Yes, I can see the work. This work was born from Setouchi Triennale 2016. It utilizes an unused warehouse. It is a work by Yoda Hiroichiro. It is a theater. It is an installation work decorated with red paint and murals in the style of an old movie theater on 42nd Street in New York. [Music] The chairs were brought from a historic movie theater in New York, and on the walls were small statues of Chaplin and Hollywood stars. As it is a mini theater, of course films were shown, including Chaplin and Flix Jatt. The next work is a part of the elementary school that has been in operation since 2005 because there are no elementary school students. This elementary school is home to several art works. The first work is located in the courtyard on the left as you enter. It is a work by Otake Shinro. Otake’s work, which begins from this colorful entrance, is an installation that boldly combines the island’s nature and man-made objects. While retaining the legacy of the former school, this entrance leads us to a different world of art. As you pass through the courtyard, you will see man-made objects like satellites mixed among the delicious plants. It is a symbolic structure in which palm trees grown on the island are planted in a huge sliver of dirt drifting in the sea, and life sprouts. The title Mekong represents the idea that this work will take root and grow. The next work is on display at the pool to the right of the entrance. After passing through the school buildings, a sign appeared. This is Jacob Dahlgren’s interpretation of color and structure. This work was created by collecting unused items from the local community. What the collected items have in common is that they are square. Books, video cassettes, plastic containers, and other items of the same shape but different colors are used. By combining various colors, sizes, and materials, a space like a small town is created. If you look closely, you can see things that are somehow nostalgic and things that are still in use. If you look from afar, you can see a colorful small town. This is a work that can be enjoyed from any angle. After passing through the village, you will come out to the seaside. You can see the Setouchi Association in the background. We have arrived at the next work. This Komika is the gallery. This is the navigation room for Nicola Dalo’s work. Nicola Dalo is an artist from France and has participated in the Echigotori Ennarea Kitatarps International Festival in the past. Look at the bell [Music] [Music] This work is designed to allow you to experience the flow of the celestial bodies, which are linked to the swaying kites, the colors of the music box, and the Setouchi Kai, which can be seen from the window of the room. By walking around the exhibition room and observing the outside and the movements of the celestial bodies from different angles, you can experience the difference between the scale of humans and the sense of time in nature. We have come to the coastline. The Setouchi Kai is so beautiful, isn’t it? It’s so relaxing. The Ume-go has just set sail for Kamijima. It’s 2:30 now, so we have about 3 hours to spare. We are walking along the coastline towards the port. In summer, this beach is filled with swimmers. The next work is located on the seafront. We have arrived at a small shop called Pro. This is the project Meitengai, a small shop on an island that started in 2019 with a seaside vibe. It has the image of a small complex with a shopping, laundry and cafe as well as art appreciation. This is the third time this project has been held, and it seems that a new yoga class has been added and the luxury works have been updated, so I’m very excited. The first work is Nakazato’s yoga class. After checking in on the first floor, you will be guided to the second floor. There is a large window at the front of the room, and you can see the sea and the opposite shore beyond it. Glass is slowly rolling by the window . As it is a yoga class, there are large mirrors on both sides, and above all, the blank installed in the center is a great way to look up. The wheels of the bicycles installed on the floor start to move in tandem and the bells begin to ring. This sound and scenery certainly makes this the best place for yoga and meditation. [Music] Next is the work next to the yoga class. It is a work by Ayumi Shibata, “Song of Life: The Sound of Heaven.” Do you know what this work is made of? In fact, it is all paper. Ayumi Shibata is a creative artist who makes works using paper and light. Her works are not just flat, but create a world that is like a three-dimensional sculpture. The paper is used as a shadow, and the delicate light that shines through creates a fantastic space. The work itself does not have any sound effects, but the sound of Franco’s bells that can be heard from the work next to it and the work The light from the sky and the sky blend together to create a relaxing space that makes you take a deep breath. This work is by Hara, a custom-made piece of clothing that brings back memories. This work is a participatory art piece created by a shop that takes orders for clothes that bring back memories. In the shop, there are rows of clothes filled with memories of various people. This is a blue knitted bow. The tags say what memories they were from and when they were worn. There was also a booth where you could submit your own memories, so please submit your own memories as well. After looking at the works on the second floor, we went to see the works on the first floor. The place was originally a guesthouse, but 1 On the third floor, you can go up to the courtyard, which makes you realize that this was a really nice inn. First up is this work: the laundromat that is open from 9am to 4:30pm. I’m sure many of you will have noticed that this is a very popular laundromat, even on a weekday, but this is also a proper work of art. It’s a unique video work called Laundry by Leandro Erlich. Leandro Erlich’s consistent theme is blurring the boundaries of what we think of as everyday life. Next to it is a washing machine that you can actually use, expressing a qualification paradox that makes you reconsider what reality is. It was a strange experience that made me ask myself, “Can I really trust in everyday life?” The next work is Express Bookstore Mekon-chan, which was released this year by the picture book author and art unit The Cabin Company. In a room that exudes colors like a picture book, books are displayed as small palm books, and The Cabin Company has disassembled and reconstructed the books and memory pages from the library of the elementary school to the right of the express, as well as the dirt remaining on the pages. And in this room, a girl who stands out from the crowd, The name of the artist is Meko-chan. Through art, you can feel the possibility of life sprouting on a temporary land. The next work is in this courtyard. There are four types of unusual table tennis tables lined up. This work is an experiential installation by Hara Rintaro and Hara. Of course, you can play, and there are rules for Ping Pong C, so be sure to call them and participate. Bolt rackets cost 100 yen per pet and can be borrowed at the reception. This table is an air hoke-style table tennis table with air coming out from underneath. It is one of the new works this year. At the last Setouchi Triennale, a heated match was held here, and we were late for the departure time for Ogishima. This is the reception shop right next to Ping Pong C. They also sold goods and stickers for Tsun’s Anamachi tenant recruitment. We saw the work. We took a break from table tennis this time because we were both tired from touring the art. There are about two hours left until the ferry to Takamatsu. We decided to go back to the port for a while. [Music] We had more time than we thought until the return ferry, so we decided to go to the Onigashima Cave . 2 Two companies operate buses to the cave, but we took this one. On the way to the cave, an introduction to Mishima Island was being broadcast. Please take a look at Ishinomaki. This is a unique stone wall called Ote, which is used to protect the houses on the island from the strong winds of Otoshi, known as Toyo. Inside Ote is like a maze. When you come back, why not take a stroll around? After about a 10-minute bus ride, we reached the top of the mountain . It seems there is a cave ahead, but we decided not to go to the cave but to head to an observation deck that offers a panoramic view of Mishima Island. We made a bit of an effort to climb the slight slope and arrived at the observation deck. Look, this magnificent view. You can see the serene Shisekai and the islands in one go. You couldn’t see it unless you climbed up this far. You can see the other side of the right island. I was able to enjoy the view of the right island until the last minute of the bus back down. I returned to the port. I bought a ticket for the return ferry, so I went to see the artworks at the port until the ferry arrived. This is Takahito Kimura’s work, Duck Parking Lot. This work was visible from the time we arrived at the right port, and it is said that there are nearly 300 ducks waiting to greet us. The Meo arrived a little late at 5:22. We departed from the right bank island about 5 minutes late. This concludes the art tour of the Setouchi International Art Center 10 Years Old Spring Station . During the 5-day art tour, I was able to visit a total of 6 islands, including Shizushima, Ogishima, and Ujima. Every island and art I visited this time was worth exploring and very beautiful . I highly recommend all of the islands. August 1st Summer starts from the day. I want to visit the islands I haven’t visited yet and the newly built Naoshima Art Museum on Naoshima. [Music] [Music] Thank you for watching. The next Setouchi International Gematsu Festival will be held on Teshima, an art museum with a world-class museum that will inspire your imagination.
