NYC Walk : Upper West Side, Where Legacy Meets Luxury | 4K
Today we are in the Upper West Side, a very popular neighborhood in New York. The Upper West Side is a very large area stretching from 59th Street to 110th Street. It is a wealthy neighborhood with beautiful brownstones and townhouses. The area has a different feel than the Upper East Side. While both neighborhoods are very expensive, the Upper West Side seems more accessible. There’s a greater diversity in the types of buildings with many of the structures newer than the Upper East Side. It’s a bit younger with many families in the area. A bit less Old money on the Upper West Side. The stores here are also not as high end as those found on Madison Avenue on the East Side. Overall, it has a bit more relaxed feel when you are walking around compared to the Upper East Side. We are now on Columbus Avenue where there are many restaurants and retail stores. It’s a cool summer day with temperatures only in the mid 70’s. It was really hot here the previous few days with temperatures getting close to 100! A lot of dogs getting their lunch time walk. It’s just after 12 in the afternoon and it’s not too busy yet. Also, many New Yorkers are traveling this time of year so it’s actually a quiet time in the city. Many have vacation home in the Hamptons, Jersey Shore or Newport. Strand, the famous East Village book store, has a branch here. This is 81st street. Let’s look at some homes on this side street. This building looks amazing and well manicured! This is Amsterdam Avenue which also has many eateries and stores. We are going to head back to Columbus Avenue now. Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation is part of the American Museum of Natural History. This is the American Museum of Natural History. This is the New York Historical, a museum with an extensive collection of historical artifacts, works of American art, and materials documenting the history of New York and the United States. We are now on Central Park West where many famous apartment buildings are located. This is the Fourth Universalist Society in the City of New York. This is the San Remo a famous apartment building built in 1930 and has had many famous residents including Steve Jobs, Steven Spielberg, Bono and Steve Martin. Two blocks south you can see another famous building, the Dakota where John Lennon lived. You can definitely tell there are some very expensive homes on this block right next to Central Park. This is Patsy’s Pizzeria, it’s been in serving pizza since 1933. We are heading west to Broadway. This is the Ansonia originally a hotel built in 1904 but is now a condominium. They don’t make buildings like this anymore, look at that detail! This is West End Avenue, there are many pre-war Beaux-Arts apartment buildings and townhouses dating from the late-19th and early 20th centuries. The Level Club was built in 1927 originally as a men’s club but is now a condominium. This is Rutgers Presbyterian Church. This is Gray’s Papaya, they make the best hot dogs in all of New York City. It’s only $5.00 for a hot dog and a drink! Locals and tourist come here for the great deal. Across the street is The Juilliard School. A world renowned performing arts school where famous alumni include Yo-Yo Ma, Miles Davis, Val Kilmer and John Williams. This is Lincoln Center, during the summer they have special dance events including silent Disco! We are back on Broadway and approaching the southern border of the Upper West Side. That’s one of the skinny skyscrapers on Billionaire’s Row.
