We Visited Lake Como + Lugano in 48 HOURS (is it worth it?) š®š¹šØš
What if I told you there are two stunningĀ
lakes just 40 minutes apart in two different countriesāLake Como, Italy, and Lugano,Ā
Switzerland? And we’re going to try to explore both in just 48 hours. SoundsĀ
easy, right? Romantic even. Hop a train from Italy to Switzerland, sip espresso, watchĀ
the mountains roll by, and in just 48 hours, see two of Europe’s most beautiful lakes. But thingsĀ
got complicated. We have to come cleanāLake Como has thrown us for a complete loop. Yes, that’sĀ
the bus. Oh. We made mistakes, and for a moment, we weren’t sure we’d make it at all. So, is itĀ
actually possible to do both in a weekend and still feel like you truly traveled? The journeyĀ
begins at 7:00 a.m. on a train ride to Como. So day one is everything about LakeĀ
Como. So if you’re going to Lake Como, you’d think to yourself, well, I probably needĀ
to go to the town of Como. But apparently this is like the least interesting place on the entireĀ
lake according to everyone. It’s just a passing through point. And a lot of people make theĀ
mistake of thinking this is where the action is. That’s right. But we’re going to visit theĀ
best places on this lakeāthat is, not Comoābut we’re starting our journey over here. I have toĀ
say though, Martine, if this is the worst place, oh my god. I think I don’t really know what toĀ
expect today. This is beautiful. It is. So let’s check out the other places. Today’s adventureĀ
called for a true Italian espresso, so we head to a little place called Barano. It’s simple.Ā
It’s not a Starbucks, so it should be good. These Italian little cafes where you stand up andĀ
drink your espresso. It’s funny because outside it says bar, but this is not a bar. That’s how theyĀ
call it. Yeah. And you know it’s a good place when locals are coming in and out within like aĀ
minute, because they’re just coming, standing, drinking their drink, heading out to work. So,Ā
little breakfast over here. One cappuccino, one cornetto. I think it’s a good day. I thinkĀ
so. And then we gotta catch our ferry after this. So it is always an adventure, you guys, whenĀ
you travel tourist to local. So we arrived at the ferry terminal and the first ferry that goesĀ
to the place that we want to go is at 10:50. What time is it right now? 9:00. And the ferry itselfĀ
takes like an hour. So we’re looking at wasting potentially 2 hoursāor no, longerāwe’re wastingĀ
3 hours. 3 hours if we wait for this ferry, which sucks because we really imagined ourselves on thisĀ
glistening lake, but I think there’ll be more of that later. So right now, we’re taking a bus inĀ
order to get to the place where we’re going to start the main thing of this lake. Yeah. And oneĀ
of our beliefs is if you know how to take a bus in one part of the world, you can take it literallyĀ
anywhere. We’re going to figure this out and get ourselves to Bellagio and not waste any timeāweĀ
only have a day here. Good. Yes, that’s the bus. Oh, that’s the bus. Oh, shoot. So we missedĀ
the bus. What are you going to do about it? We head to the station to secure a spot in the nextĀ
one. And there’s no way we’re missing that one. How much? Uh, 8.60. Oh, that’s good for both.Ā
Despite the one-hour delay, it would still get us where we want to go faster than the ferry. ThoughĀ
we joined this guy practicing karate at the bus stop, enjoyed the show, and made our way to oneĀ
of the most beautiful spots on the lakeāBellagio. We did it, mi amore. We did it. This is the life.Ā
And uh, you know guys, that bus ride wasn’t half bad. I actually really enjoyed it. And here we areĀ
in Bellagio. And this place is just as gorgeous as we imagined. Martine was just telling meĀ
something. He said, “I was really scared to come here.” Said, “What do you mean, is it dangerous orĀ
what?” And no, actually, this is the kind of place that checks all the marks of the place that I likeĀ
the most in the entire world. I meanāItalian food, beautiful, a lake. It’s very close to a bigĀ
cityāthat is, Milano. It makes me scared to be over here because then I want to live overĀ
here. This is a popular destination for people to get engaged or honeymoon. So right now,Ā
let’s be one of them. I know. Let’s recreate our honeymoon and do it here, because this is theĀ
place to do it. This is it. This hour right here, exploring the town of Bellagio. This isĀ
the Dolce Vita. Life is good on Lake Como. Well, I think we found the lunch spotĀ
for today. That’s right. The restaurant is called La Grotto. And it doesn’t have aĀ
view of the lake, but that’s important. Yeah, we’re finally going to be having some pizzaĀ
and pasta. And I would much rather have a place that’s really freaking good Italian food thanĀ
a crazy view that’s going to cost the money. This is freaking delicious. I got the AmalfitanaĀ
pizza. It’s so good. I don’t know what my technique though was with cutting itāI just kindĀ
of went crazy for the middle part. And it’s really weird how I ate this. This restaurantāitĀ
got packed 5 minutes after opening. That tells you everything about the restaurant.Ā
I ordered a pasta, and I do not regret it, because it’s delicious. After lunch, we decidedĀ
to come over to this little lookout point where you can see the “Y” of the lakeābecause it’sĀ
shaped like thatāPunta Spartivento. And for me, as I see it, it’s the center of the lake.Ā
We only have about 30 minutes left here in Bellagio because where we’re at right now isĀ
actually one of the points of the Golden Triangle, as they call it. There are three towns thatĀ
you can take ferries from here. And I can see why people get engaged here and do theirĀ
honeymoon. This place is just romantic. I mean, you think crystal turquoise waters is like theĀ
most beautiful waterāI love how this is such a deep blue. It’s almost black. Definitely. SoĀ
calm, so romantic, so beautiful. 2 hours was actually the perfect amount of time toĀ
spend here. And it’s just our luck that we timed things right and could catch the ferryĀ
right across the lake to our next townāVarenna. Just in time. It’s a short ride, maybe 15 minutes,Ā
but with these views, it was definitely one of the highlights of our day. By the way, if you’reĀ
coming straight from Milan, there’s a train that lets you off here. And it’s a much easier optionĀ
than stopping in Como first like we did. And this is a town you’ll want to spend some time in. It’sĀ
somehow even more beautiful than Bellagio was. Pistachio. Yum. Welcome to Varenna, guys. It’sĀ
a little bit after noon. I already took off two layers, and the sun is up. Perfect timeĀ
for gelato. Oh my god, it’s so good. We were just walking along the shore to this placeĀ
calledāI think it’s La Passerella. It just says Gelateria outside. I think this is even moreĀ
beautiful than the last spot. I know we said we’re going to go to three different towns,Ā
but as much as possible, what we’re doing is taking the time just to watch the lake andĀ
just holding hands and talking to each other, because that’s what this place is allĀ
about. Yeah, exactly. It’s like we’re on our own little mini honeymoon. It feels likeĀ
we’re in an Italian romance movie, or like, I don’t know, we fled here to write a book.Ā
We’re authors. I don’t know. It’s beautiful. After finishing up our gelato, we walk uphill toĀ
the Piazza San Giorgio, where we take a peek at the Casa di San Giorgio before making our wayĀ
to that one place weāve all seen photos of at Lake Como. This is Villa Monastero, and the gardenĀ
is open every day with a cost of ā¬10 per person. Yeah, but if you want to go to the museum, youĀ
have to wait because they only open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. ā¬10 is 100% worth it. YouĀ
know, they say this place is super expensive for the rich and wealthy, but thatās notĀ
too bad to enter this place. No, no, no. We spent about 30 minutes here having a long,Ā
leisurely stroll through this garden and imagining what life must be like living on this lake. AndĀ
you guys know usāitās completely unlike us to take things this slow on our travel days. But thereāsĀ
something so nice about just wandering without a plan. Thatās how we end up here. So we decided toĀ
have a little drink over here, just admiring. We are not saying anything to ourselves, weāre justĀ
watching. Whatās the name of the place? Barolo. And we have one of the best views over here.Ā
This is not a bad place to pass the afternoon. But perhaps we took things a little too slow.Ā
We have to come clean. Yeah, we need to be so freaking real with you guys right now. We considerĀ
ourselves really smart, prepared travelers, and Lake Como has thrown us for a completeĀ
loop. The thing is, there was a third place we were supposed to show you here. And being theĀ
smart travelers we are, we were already, you know, five steps ahead trying to figure out, okay, howĀ
do we get to our hotel tonight? And thatās when we realizedāwe could be completely stranded if weĀ
donāt take the absolute next boat out of here. Thatās right. So the place that we wantedĀ
to visitāthe third placeāoh thereās George Clooney! Hey! The third place we wantedĀ
to visit is Menaggio. And the problem is, yeah, as Elena said, if we donātĀ
take the next ferry out of here, weāre going to stay over here overnight. IāmĀ
talking till 6:00 a.m. There is no other way out. Uh, and thatās the problem here in LakeĀ
Como. If you do decide to go on a day trip, if you are not careful with your schedulingĀ
of the boats to your other boat to your bus to your train to get back to wherever youāreĀ
staying, you could be stranded here for real. Iāve seen a lot of videos of people comingĀ
over here and they were talking about that, but itās like, oh wait, itās regular touristsĀ
that wake up at 9:00. That cannot be us. And look at us. But it is. I mean, what time isĀ
it right now? Uh, 4:10. And the actual direct boat to Como has sold out. So we need to take aĀ
different boat that gets us to Bellagio and then to Como. Thatās the only option right now. SoĀ
you really have to be careful with your timing. We would have loved to show you guysĀ
Menaggio. We had a great dinner lined up, but it is what it is. You know, thatās travel forĀ
you. Once we secured tickets, the ride back to Como was easy, but the whole time we were askingĀ
ourselvesāhow could we have done this differently? We love public transport. Itās our go-toĀ
in most places. But after some research, it became clear that if you want to exploreĀ
the lake on your own termsāespecially when itās just a day tripāyouāve got to rent a car. All ourĀ
travel time would have been cut in half this day, and we actually could have stayed asĀ
long as we wanted. But it is what it is. With the stress behind us, we were ready toĀ
actually relax. We werenāt staying in Como at all. The prices were wild. The crowds can be crazy.Ā
And we wanted something a little more local, somewhere quiet, somewhere between the two citiesĀ
we want to visit. So we opened a map, and there it wasāVarese. Weād never heard of it, but forĀ
some reason it called to us, and we loved it. Itās the kind of town where theĀ
bakery knows your name by morning two, and the locals actually live in the homes youĀ
walk past. And just outside the center of town, we found the Hotel Horizon Wellness Spa ResortĀ
BW Signature Collection by Best Western, who has partnered with us for this trip toĀ
help us showcase a little-known lakeside village that lots of people miss when visitingĀ
Como. The rooms were clean and offered sweeping views of Lake Varese. And we were able toĀ
properly unwind after all that ferry drama. Plus, they have an incredible on-siteĀ
spa with a pool, saunas, and steam room, which is the perfect reset button. Plus, theĀ
on-site restaurant made it easy to get a meal in after a long day exploring. And the quietĀ
trails through the countryside made this an even more lovely place to enjoy the sunsetĀ
because it was just for us. And honestly, one of my favorite thingsājust next door, thereāsĀ
a llama and goat farm. Beautiful. Beautiful. So yeah, if you got a car and youāre open toĀ
stepping just off the tourist trail, this might be your perfect pace too. Weāll leave a link to thisĀ
property below if youāre interested in staying here. Good morning, travelers. Itās day two, andĀ
I think today is going to be a much less stressful day than yesterday. And it should be very easyĀ
today because weāre only visiting one place. Yesāone city, on one lake. Itās called Lugano. AndĀ
itās in Switzerland, which is a new country for you, Martine. Thatās right. We have our passports,Ā
and weāre ready. Letās go catch the train. You know, itās kind of fun to come to such aĀ
random town. It makes me daydream about what life must be like living here. And it reminds meĀ
so much of the way my mom would plan our travels. She was notorious for picking really randomĀ
spots that just called to her on a map. And we would stay there, and it would always beĀ
like an hour away from anything popular. But sometimes itās in those experiences thatĀ
you have some of the best memories. Like, I donāt knowānot many people can sayĀ
theyāve stayed in the town of Varese, Italy. And weāre loving it. We got our ticketsĀ
for the train. Itās only a 40-minute ride actually from the train stationāso pretty quick. And weāreĀ
going to have a second breakfast when weāre there. Okay, we arrived over here. This is Lugano.Ā
And because itās my first time in Switzerland, I hear thereās very good chocolateāI need toĀ
try some. Letās start this day with breakfast. We decided to come to this little cafĆ©Ā
called The Nini. And itās just about a block away from the lake. Itās so charming toĀ
sit out here and enjoy the sun. And Iām excited because this hot chocolate is delicious. ItĀ
aināt no Swiss Miss, let me tell you that. This particular establishment hasĀ
been making chocolate since 1871. Uh, they actually have a chocolate shop here whereĀ
you can watch them make the chocolate and you can buy some delicious truffles to go. We mightĀ
have to sneak some in our carry-on. And also, along with this, I got a panini with Swiss cheese, because we got to have everything Swiss forĀ
the little time weāre here in Switzerland. After that coffee, after that breakfast, IĀ
think weāre ready to explore the lake. Itās so, so beautiful, you guys. Thereās this nice walkingĀ
pathāyou can go along the entire coastline. Letās see what we can find here. Uh, I like this littleĀ
pier. You know, Iām good here. This isāI could sit here all day long. To walk from one end of theĀ
waterfront to the other only takes 23 minutes, but for us it turned into an hour. We keptĀ
finding these perfect lookout points of the city where we enjoy the reflection ofĀ
the water and watch kayakers pass by. Thereās a couple of fountains over here, and I heard the water is veryĀ
good. Iām going to taste it. Tasty. Eventually, we find ourselves on the otherĀ
endāat Parco Ciani. Yeah, I feel you, man. After too many countries, too many cities,Ā
every single day walking more than 22,000 steps, waking up before 6:00 in theĀ
morningāI know how we feel. Oh, so many ducks. I would jump in if itĀ
wasnāt so cold right now. Itās beautiful. Now weāre in this beautiful place called ParcoĀ
Ciani, and itās a must if you visit Lugano. Normally they have a villa that is open, butĀ
right now because itās low season, itās under construction. Oh really? Here I am thinking thatĀ
this was the villa. This whole time I was like, this is gorgeous. And itās free to walk around theĀ
park. And you pointed out something very good that I didnāt notice. This cityāin comparison with LakeĀ
Comoāit feels more like a functional city. I mean, weāve seen people walking around their dogs andĀ
also kids after school playing in the playground, and it feels like a city that has life.Ā
Yeah, exactly. And not just maybe a tourist attraction. Like thereās regular, regularĀ
people living here. And I kind of love that. On the other hand though, one thingĀ
I did just sayāfor some reason, that makes it not as romantic. I still love it, but itās not like, you know, privateĀ
to yourself. No oneās around. Exactly. We decided to stop into Antica Osteria delĀ
Porto because even though weāre in Switzerland, thereās so much Italian influence in this town.Ā
They still speak Italian here and thereās tons of Italian food. And this looks incredible. AndĀ
I got this gorgeous-looking caciu e pepe. Now, um, in terms of pricingāyou may be curiousĀ
if thereās any price differences between the two lakes. Theyāre pretty much the same.Ā
Theyāre both expensive places. It is what it is. So itās not like weāre getting a dealĀ
over here. Weāre still in Switzerland. Iām not overreacting. This is so, so good.Ā
Martine went for the oxtail risotto. Oh, so good. Itās delicious. Probably one of the bestĀ
risottos Iāve ever had in my life. Really? Yes. After lunch, we decided to spend more timeĀ
at the lake, just relaxing. In two days, we had seen a lot of placesābut weĀ
also hadnāt seen much, when you think about it. And maybe thatās okay. Weāre notĀ
perfect travelers. We tend to rush. We cram too much in. We try to film everything, feelĀ
everything, tell stories in 48-hour windows. But thereās a kind of beauty in that chaos.Ā
And thereās also beauty in the pause. When you hear āLa Dolce Vita,ā I doubt you pictureĀ
running around with a checklist. I picture a bench. A lake. Ice cream with your best friend.Ā
The sound of nothing in particular. I guess when you think about it, we could have stayed in any ofĀ
these three placesāComo, Varese, or Luganoāand had just as much fun doing almost nothing at all.Ā
But weāre curious: which one would you pick? Fast forward a bit and weāre on the hunt forĀ
one essential piece of la dolce vitaāa good scoop of gelato. This gelato turned outĀ
so good. I think one of the best that we had during our trip, if not the best,Ā
because this pistachio gelatoāit has little chunks of pistachio. Pistachio.Ā
The name of the place is 9° Gelato. Weāre just going to wrap this up and thenĀ
head to our next spotālast spotābefore we come to our final conclusion of which one weĀ
like more. This is our final stop. This is the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, and itās smallĀ
but very cute, and it has an amazing view of the lake. And you canāt miss it because itāsĀ
the first thing you see when you get off the train. Itās free to enter. And what I like aboutĀ
this oneāit got in a process of restoration. So they show you a couple of pictures: howĀ
it was before and how itās now. Beautiful. I really did think that this lake was goingĀ
to be so similar to Lake Como that itād be hard to tell which one is better, but IĀ
feel like I have some opinions now. Yeah, thatās right. I think this placeāitās moreĀ
like a one-day trip. And easily, you can just enjoy it. But Lake ComoāI think for sure it takesĀ
more, maybe two or three days. But either way, both destinationsātheyāre amazing. I think IāmĀ
very happy we were able to visit both lakes. But next week, weāre keeping one more placeātheĀ
last one over here in Europe during this series. Yeahāitās Milan. Weāve left a video to the sideĀ
for you guys to keep watching our adventures. So long. Travel well. Make the world yourĀ
neighborhood. See you guys next time. Bye-bye.
We set out to visit two iconic lakes in two different countries…all in just 48 hours. From the elegance of Lake Como, Italy to the charm of Lake Lugano, Switzerland, this quick escape turned out to be more than we bargained for.
In this video, we share our perfect weekend itinerary exploring both lakes, plus some important things we wish we knew before going. We hope this video will help you plan smarter and travel better.

I really appreciate that you include unexpected things/events in your videos. āAdventureā doesnāt always go as planned and knowing how others handle those situations can be just as valuable as the planning part. š
This world is so beautiful, thanks for sharing this portion of it with us!
Itās my dream to go to Lake Como.
I love ypu videos, but just wondering why you are rushing through cities and countries? Haven't you quit your full time jobs back home?
My partner, Jeremy, and I love watching your videos! Like you guys, we also have full-time jobs, but we travel whenever we can, even if it's only to see a city for a couple of days! You guys have been soooo relatable to us and we have so many things in common – in your style of travel, the things you enjoy doing while traveling, etc., and we, too, are an interracial couple (my family is from Mexico and he is Caucasian). We took your advice RE: photo spot for the Museum of the Future in Dubai recently and it worked out perfect…we were the only ones there! š Would love to join your group tour in Vietnam, or any other potential ones down the road! Keep up the great work and showing us places to see, what to do, what to eat, etc.! You guys are amazing!
Great video! Renting a car is definitely the best way to see Lake Como, but we loved seeing the other side of things. Very informative and still so beautiful!
I took a day trip from Milan, Italy š®š¹ to Lugano, Switzerland šØš back in January of 2024. I have been there and really loved it! . Itās an easy day trip.
Great video, really enjoy your content.
From Lugano, the train ride to Zurich is the most stunning in the world. Cheers.
