Walking in Monopoli – The Beautiful Italian Town Everyone Skips (BIG Mistake!)
In this video Italy’s full of surprises… and Monopoli is one of its best. Now, put on your comfy shoes (virtually, of course) and join me on this beautiful tour! This is a sunny, seaside town sitting right on the Adriatic, in the heart of Puglia, down in southern Italy. It’s the kind of place where you can truly slow down and soak up the good life. It may not be as famous as its neighbors, but Monopoli has a soul that will steal your heart. And where you have to be a master at driving to sneak through these tiny alleys! Could you imagine driving here yourself? In Monopoli, life flows slowly, like a calm sea breeze. And that’s exactly what makes it so magical. A vintage Fiat in a picnic outfit and a smiling straw lady — only in Monopoli! Would you stop here for a coffee?” Right in front of us is the beautiful Monopoli Cathedral — just look at that grand baroque façade! It’s dedicated to the Madonna della Madia and has been standing here since the 1700s We’ve taken in its beautiful exterior, and now it’s time to step inside for a few peaceful minutes and really feel its magic Alright, now that we’re inside the Monopoli Cathedral… take a deep breath. Do you feel that calm? This cathedral, officially called the Basilica Cattedrale Maria Santissima della Madia, is the heart of Monopoli’s faith and history The first version of the church began in 1107, but legend says they stopped because they ran out of wood for the roof. Then, on December 16, 1117, a raft carrying an icon of the Virgin Mary miraculously floated into the port People saw this as a divine sign, so they used the wood from the raft to finish building the roof That’s why she’s called Madonna della Madia. The current baroque structure you see now was rebuilt in the 1700s, finished around 1772 Look around at the ornate chapels, the marble details, and that impressive main altar — all made to honor this miracle. The cathedral also has a beautiful crypt underneath, with traces of the original Romanesque church and even older remains. And don’t miss the Madonna icon itself, placed above the altar — it’s considered miraculous and deeply loved by locals. You can almost hear the whispers of centuries of devotion here. Can you imagine standing here back in the 1700s, seeing sailors and townspeople coming in to pray after spotting that raft at sea? Did you know Monopoli has over 20 stunning beaches right around town? Locals come here to swim before or after work, and in the evenings, the old port fills with laughter and the smell of grilled fish. Let’s take a walk together and see why Monopoli is one of Puglia’s best-kept secrets. Right now, we’re standing at Cala Porta Vecchia, the most beloved town beach Just look at this view! If you enjoy the video, please give it a thumbs up! It means a lot to me, thank you so much!🙏 The beach is nestled right beneath the old city walls, so while you swim, you’re literally floating in history. You can also explore the bay on a paddle board — have you ever tried it? This spot is a favorite for locals, especially early in the morning or at sunset. You’ll often see families chatting, kids playing in the shallow water, and older folks enjoying a gentle swim before lunch. The water here is shallow and crystal-clear, with a soft sandy bottom — perfect for relaxing without worrying about strong waves And when you look up, you’ll see Monopoli’s thick city walls rising right next to the beach, almost as if they’re standing guard over the sea. In the evenings, people come to sit on the rocks or stroll along the promenade with a gelato in hand, listening to the gentle sound of the waves In front of us is the Chiesetta di San Giovanni, a charming 18th-century chapel Modest yet graceful, this chapel is a local favorite for its serene, soothing atmosphere. Let’s keep walking, there’s still so much more to discover in this beautiful Puglian gem. Right now we’re in Largo Palmieri, standing in front of the Chiesa di Santa Teresa And right next to it is Palazzo Palmieri — an elegant 18th-century palace that once hosted noble families and important guests With its grand balconies and refined baroque details, it feels like a quiet guardian of Largo Palmieri, adding a touch of aristocratic charm to the square And here’s the Fontana Largo Palmieri — a simple, elegant fountain that brings a refreshing charm to the square. Built in the 18th century, this elegant baroque church is known for its grand dome and simple yet graceful façade Now that we’re inside Chiesa di Santa Teresa, take a moment to feel the calm The inside is bright and simple, with one whitewashed nave that feels so light and peaceful, almost like it’s floating. Above us, the grand dome brings in soft light and makes the space feel open and airy. Along the sides, you’ll find small chapels with delicate paintings and wooden busts holding relics of St. Teresa of Ávila and St. John of the Cross. These two saints were especially important to the Carmelites who built the church between 1716 and 1735. After being closed for many years, it reopened in the late 1800s and has been a quiet spiritual corner ever since. It’s a place that combines art, faith, and simplicity in such an elegant way You can feel that calming energy around us. At midday, grab a table in the shade and enjoy a cool glass of spritz or local wine Walking around here feels like pressing pause on life. You forget all your worries as you listen to the gentle sound of the waves and watch the sunlight dance on the sea The old buildings stand proudly by the water, reminding you to slow down and just breathe It’s the kind of place where stress simply melts away Every corner invites you to wander a little longer. Maybe stop for a gelato or just sit on a bench and watch the fishing boats come and go The mix of sea breeze, salty air, and warm stone walls makes you feel completely at peace Enjoyed the journey? A like would mean the world to me — thank you so much for being here! 🙌 These ancient walls once protected Monopoli from pirates and invaders Today, they’re the perfect place for a sunset stroll, with the sound of waves crashing just below And this is Castello Carlo V, one of Monopoli’s proudest landmarks This impressive fortress was built in the mid-1500s by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, to defend the town against Ottoman attacks and pirate raids Its strategic spot right on the sea made it a perfect lookout point. The castle has a powerful, almost stern look from the outside, with thick walls and bastions designed to scare off any invader. But inside, you’ll find large halls and terraces that today host art exhibitions, concerts, and cultural events. Here, you can almost imagine cannons lined up, guards watching the horizon, and life in the old port bustling below. Here we see the boats calmly anchored, the sea sparkling around them, and the old town watching quietly in the background And now… just look at this peaceful scene The shimmering water catches the evening light, small boats drift quietly, and the town fades softly into the horizon Look at this boat gliding in, right past the lighthouse. The old stone walls, the open sea, and that gentle movement, it all feels so alive and peaceful at the same time The perfect place to stop, breathe, and just enjoy the moment Here by the lighthouse, you’ll see people snapping photos, couples enjoying the sea breeze, and a few locals quietly fishing off the edge This is the Faro Rosso, Monopoli’s red-and-white lighthouse — a cheerful landmark guiding boats home and adding a splash of color to the harbor. And this little boat, calmly floating as if it’s enjoying a lazy afternoon — pure, simple seaside charm. Here we are again at the mighty castle, with its thick stone walls and strong, square towers — a silent guardian that has watched over the harbor for centuries It feels so nice and refreshing to stroll along this promenade beside the castle. The sea breeze brushes your face, the air feels cool, and that gentle wind makes you want to keep walking and soaking it all in. A calm stroll here, boats swaying, the sky glowing — it just makes you slow down and smile Seeing these fishing boats makes me dream of joining the old fishermen one morning And listen to their sea stories as the sun comes up. It would be magic. Or how about a fun boat ride, complete with pirate flags and salty sea tales? A little adventure on the waves never hurt anyone! Now we’re in the heart of the old port, right by the big MONOPOLI sign — the perfect photo spot for visitors Behind it, you’ll see the charming little blue fishing boats called gozzi, a true symbol of local life. These small boats have been used for generations by fishermen heading out at dawn to catch fresh seafood for the town’s restaurants and markets. If you liked this video, a simple thumbs up would really help! Thanks a million for your support! 🙏 This is where the town feels most alive, yet so peaceful at the same time. A little wonderland of colors and lights — the perfect spot to find a cheerful souvenir Welcome to Largo Giuseppe Garibaldi — the lively square at the very heart of the town! This historic piazza, once the bustling ‘mercato delle merci,’ is now the social pulse of the old town And right here in the square stands the Torre Civica, the old civic tower with its clock and coat of arms. Once used to mark important announcements and watch over the town, today it quietly reminds us of Monopoli’s long, proud history Puglia’s cuisine is all about fresh, honest flavors—think seafood, simple pasta, pizza, and local cheese Seafood soups (cjambòtte) and tiella Barese (layered rice, potatoes & mussels) right by the port Hand-made orecchiette with cime di rapa, anchovies, or seasonal mushrooms Fresh burrata drizzled in olive oil – a heavenly starter Delicious panzerotti and focaccia barese—perfect on the go You’ll also find charming restaurants like this one — decorated so beautifully that it almost feels like a tiny museum From old ship models to pirate swords and ancient guns, every corner tells a story of the sea and adventure. Perfect for a cozy meal and some fun photos! Would you like to visit this little seaside town someday? Or maybe… could you even imagine living here, by the sea, enjoying that relaxed Italian lifestyle every day? Thank you for joining me on this walk — it wouldn’t have been the same without you.
