798 Art Zone carries the industrial memory of a special era. Its predecessor was the cradle of the electronics industry of New China – the state-owned 798 Factory, which was the military electronics joint factory built by the former USSR and the DRG. The mottled red brick exterior walls, towering chimneys and rusty pipes all tell of the glory of the past. Since 2002, artists and cultural institutions have begun to transform these abandoned factories into galleries, art studios, cultural stores and dining spaces. 798 has gradually transformed into one of the most influential contemporary art districts in China, becoming a model of the integration of industrial heritage transformation and artistic creativity.

We stepped into 798 Art Zone from street side, and soon, a strong artistic atmosphere hit us. Different from the Nakameguro Art District in Tokyo, Japan, which is dominated by exquisite and delicate Japanese aesthetics, the art style of 798 tends to be a soft fusion of tradition and modernity. It is also different from the SoHo district in New York, USA, which is famous for its high-end and fashionable art atmosphere and expensive galleries. 798 Art Zone has a unique Chinese flavor, perfectly combining rough industrial relics with avant-garde contemporary art, and every corner is full of surprises and creativity.

Walking on the streets of 798 Art Zone, sculptures attracted us first, some seem to come from outer space, some express their thoughts on reality with exaggerated shapes. Walking into a gallery casually may encounter an exhibition of world-class artists, and multiple art forms such as installation art, video art, and paintings constantly impact your vision and thinking. You can see the artists in the studio focusing on their creations and feel the charm of the process of art birth.

Keep going, many cultural shops with unique characteristics on the street are also worth stopping. Unlike the Japanese-style cultural and creative products commonly seen in stores in the Japanese art district, and unlike the trendy and luxurious stores in the American Soho district, the stores in 798 sell cultural and creative products with unique Chinese characteristics and contemporary art styles. From postcards printed with art paintings to unique handicrafts, each one can become a unique souvenir of your art journey.

Going northeast along, the iconic No.79 Can gradually come into view. It were a giant gas tanks in the 751 factory area, and have been transformed into an important place for large-scale art exhibitions and activities. Every time it is “opened”, just like opening a new art world.

If you also yearn for a stroll full of artistic atmosphere and want to feel the collision of industrial history and contemporary art, you must not miss 798 Art Zone. The journey from the street to No.79 Can is not only a spatial movement, but also an artistic journey of the soul. Come and follow us to appreciate the unique charm of 798 Art Zone in advance!
