【女ひとり旅】想像以上だった…ジャンプ台からの絶景│サウンドオブミュージックのロケ地│おとぎ話のような湖畔の町│Vlog [古都インスブルック/ザンクトヴォルフガング] Vol.2
Good morning. It’s just past 7am. The Nordkette range rises right behind the town — its presence is striking, no matter how many times I see it. I think there’s more snow on the peaks today than yesterday.
It must have fallen overnight. Today, I’m planning to visit the ski jump,
which you can see beyond the triumphal arch. Originally, I was going to hike one of the well-known trails,
but after climbing part of the Nordkette yesterday, I realised something: above 2,000 metres, even in May, the snow hasn’t melted completely. It’s hard to hike in those conditions, so I’ve changed my plans. Still, when do we ever see a ski jump,
except during the Olympics on television? I thought — if I can see it with my own eyes, it might be a rare experience. Looking back, the Nordkette stands tall, almost hanging over the town. It reaches higher than the clouds, and I can’t help but stop and stare. From this viewpoint, I can already sense the views will be stunning. The mountain’s scale is overwhelming — the houses look tiny below. The snow near the summit helps define every ridge and slope, bringing the shape of the mountain into sharp focus. I hold that feeling close and walk on. To be honest, I hesitated at first. You can see the jump even from outside — is it worth €11? But I am happy that I have decided to come in! But standing at the base and looking up, the sheer size of it hits me. From up close, the height feels real. It’s a completely different sense of distance than on a screen. Now, I’m taking the funicular to the top. Already, the seating area looks tiny from here — and beyond it, the town looks like a model village. Here’s the lift for the athletes — it takes them straight to the starting point. We don’t get to use that. Instead, there’s another lift round the back for visitors. It brings me to the second-floor restaurant, and from there I go up once more to the third-floor terrace. It’s high — properly high. I can’t believe the athletes make that jump from such a height. Standing here, it really feels as if you might fly through the air. When I zoom in with the camera, I can just make out the mountain hut we visited yesterday. If we had gone again today, it would have been completely buried in snow. The reason I came to this floor is to see the “Jumper’s Viewpoint”. Here, you can look out from the exact spot where the athletes begin their run. And this is the view. The starting point sits far above the ground and the town—almost level with the surrounding peaks, which reach over 2,000 metres. After taking in the view, I decide it’s time to head back to town. The cable car and the viewpoint turn out to be much more enjoyable than I had expected. Even without going for a hike, I still get to enjoy the mountain scenery from high above. Just as I reach the bottom and start thinking of leaving, I notice a group nearby that looks like part of a guided tour. I wait around for fifteen minutes, quietly hoping for something. Then, all of a sudden, the sprinklers start. In front of the group, an athlete in full ski gear begins preparing at the starting point. And then—the moment arrives. There’s no snowfall, but I get to see a real ski jump, right before my eyes. What luck! I’ve just witnessed something amazing. At first, I hesitate about spending €11, but this turns out to be worth far more. It’s a brilliant use of both time and money. I’ve come in through the back, but it’s just beside the palace. It looks full of local charm—even the interior makes me excited to try the food. In fact, I already know what I want to order before even looking at the menu. A traditional dish from the Tyrol region, where Innsbruck is located. It’s a kind of dumpling made with flour, and this one comes in three flavours: spinach, onion, and cheese. It makes sense that it’s listed as a starter. The taste is rich, and it’s the sort of dish that’s good to share with a beer. Still a great meal. I’m full now, so it’s time to move on. Next, I take a local bus. I show the Welcome Card I got at the hostel on my phone, and ride for free. I hadn’t known about this card when I booked my stay, so it’s a pleasant surprise. This afternoon, I plan to leave the town and follow a walking route I saw in a leaflet at the hotel. THE countryside view. I’m going to walk a route that takes about 1.5 hours. It begins at this little tram stop.
I follow the path, step by step, just as the leaflet suggests. The Alpine feeling is everywhere. I never get bored of this mountain view. At one point, I lose the way and end up taking a detour. At another point, it was tempting to take a tram and head back. I finally reach the castle. The castle now serves as a museum. After all the walking, my legs are worn out. I take the free bus again and head back to the hostel. Tomorrow, I leave Innsbruck and set off for Hallstatt. For now, I return to the hostel early and take the evening slowly. Good morning! I catch the 5:10 train and set off for Salzburg. As the train moves on, the sky slowly begins to lighten. Still sleepy, I rub my eyes and try to hold on to the Alpine views I’ve seen so often on this journey. When I arrive at Salzburg station, I head straight to the bus stop in front. Bus 150 to Hallstatt leaves from here. I plan to stop by and enjoy Lake Wolfgangsee first, on my way to Hallstatt This is where Mozart’s mother, Anna Maria, was born. When I looked things up online beforehand, I read that there was a statue of Mozart in the square. But when I arrived, it was no longer there. From here, I board a sightseeing boat. Today’s plan is to take the Schafberg Railway — a steep mountain train featured in The Sound of Music. That was the plan — but the weather isn’t on my side. The woman at the boat terminal kindly showed me a live camera feed from the summit — it was lost in thick cloud. Still, I decide to head to the base of the mountain and decide from there. The boat moves forward as a guide gives some explanation of the scenery. It’s spacious, calm and comfortable. Even under a cloudy sky, the lake’s turquoise colour is striking. I disembark at the Schafberg Railway station. As the rain grows heavier, I decide against the mountain train — but I still want to see it with my own eyes. The small locomotive pushes the carriages from behind as it climbs. I’ve now got another reason to return to Austria. While I take shelter from the rain, the sky begins to clear as I approach the next town. The buildings remind me of Colmar and Strasbourg in France, which I visited before.
Both towns are said to have inspired Howl’s Moving Castle and Beauty and the Beast. This place also has that same storybook charm. I find a shop selling traditional clothing — it’s lovely. As the weather clears, I leave the town briefly to reach a viewpoint I found on Google Maps. It’s a steep climb, and I’m out of breath. After about fifteen minutes uphill from the town, I reach the top — and the view is stunning. The lake looks like a painting. I didn’t get to ride the train, but this view alone is worth the journey. The weather keeps improving — it’s almost too warm now. And I have this beautiful spot all to myself. A hidden gem, thanks to Google Maps. If you visit St. Wolfgang, I truly recommend it. I still want to explore more of the town, so I head back. From behind the church, the lake is visible again — a different angle, just as beautiful. Just watching the decoration of each buildings is already fun. One hotel, with red walls, has music notes painted on the side. It feels as though I’ve stepped into a fairy-tale. At the edge of town, I reach another boat terminal. The surface glitters like jewels in the sun. The sunlight deepens the blue of the water. It’s time to set off for the next destination. From the boat, I glance back and spot the railway tracks in the hills. It’s hard to leave, but the journey continues. Now, I head towards the highlight of this trip — Hallstatt. I disembark on the eastern side of the lake, in a town called Strobl. From there, I take a bus to Bad Ischl station. From this point, the route returns to the same one I followed from Salzburg. The weather is mild, the landscape peaceful. Mountains draw closer, and then the lake comes into view. From here, I take a short boat ride to the town of Hallstatt. It lasts only about five minutes — but I feel full of emotion.
This is the place I’ve long dreamed of. I’ve seen many pictures, but seeing it in person is something else entirely. The town is completely surrounded by mountains which I didn’t expect. Now, I catch sight of Hallstatt itself — it’s nearly here. The final chapter of this Austrian journey just begins….
