wooden trim, and colorful awnings that show the town’s mining history.
One of the highlights is the Strater Hotel, a landmark since 1887, where you can step inside to 
see its grand staircase and old-fashioned lobby. As you continue walking, you might hear 
live music or see a street performer adding energy to the sidewalks.
The streets are easy to walk, with benches along the way and plenty 
of spots to step inside and look around. Number 16: Durango and 
Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad This train has been running through the mountains 
since 1882, carrying passengers to either Cascade Canyon or the old mining town of Silverton.
It follows the Animas River and passes through the San Juan National Forest, with steep 
cliffs, tall trees, and wide mountain views. You’ll cross a high bridge 
and ride beside deep valleys. The train runs year-round to Cascade Canyon, and

locomotives, vintage passenger cars, antique trucks and tractors, and a model 
train layout showing life in the 1950s. You can climb into a real locomotive 
cab and check out the levers and gauges. There’s also a restored business car 
from 1880 and a baggage car used in the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
Other exhibits include mining tools, lanterns, keys, photographs, and a replica of a 1913 plane 
that once flew during Durango’s state fair. Number 14: Smelter Mountain
If you enjoy hiking, head to Smelter Mountain just south of Durango.
A 4-mile (6-km) trail takes you uphill through pine trees, cactus, and yucca plants, with birds 
like hummingbirds and hawks often flying overhead. As you climb up the rocky

and the San Juan Mountains in the distance. From the top, you can spot Lake
