【京都 2泊3日旅行】人気パン屋巡り、鴨川でモーニング|東福寺・平等院の国宝巡り|宇治の抹茶パフェ|旅行Vlog #3
Good morning. It’s the morning of day three. I’m going to buy some bread and coffee now, and hopefully head to the Kamo River. There’s already a line. I came 10 minutes before opening, but there are already more than 10 groups waiting. Entered the store at 9 a.m. They have so many kinds of croissants, and they all look delicious. It looks like their popular cream bread isn’t ready yet. Too bad. I asked, and they said it’ll be about 20 more minutes, so I chose other bread. Bacon and egg hot sandwich. I found a bell tower at Rokkakudo while walking. Kyoto is full of surprises—temples and historical buildings suddenly appear. Just strolling is fun. Rokkakudo is said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku. I’d love to see the hexagonal main hall from above, but today I’ll view it from the ground. Spotted Blue Bottle Coffee. It’s next to a bike shop. A unique mix of a coffee shop and a bicycle store while preserving the machiya style. Very interesting. SAMURAI NIN… Samurai & Ninja Museum. People are gathering since morning—it looks quite popular. Found this bakery by chance. It was actually one of the places I wanted to visit—didn’t know there was a second location. Lucky! Went in without hesitation. An unplanned bakery-hopping adventure. Reasonably priced, which is nice. Lots of variety too. Found my favorite—panini. Unfortunately, they couldn’t warm it up, but it was still warm enough. I only got three here. Sometimes I wish I had a bigger appetite. Walking through town, I kept seeing shops renovated from old machiya houses. At the back of this parking lot is the coffee shop I’m looking for. I got a bit lost trying to get here and ended up circling around. This is also a coffee stand renovated from a traditional machiya townhouse. Great atmosphere. There are no seats, but everyone enjoys their drinks outside, wherever they like. You can also purchase their house-roasted beans. Now we’ve got our breakfast all together. Arrived at the Kamo River. In the morning, the Kamo River is still quiet. A peaceful and calm morning. Let’s enjoy breakfast while looking at the river. It’s kind of surreal… Just like yesterday, I ended up buying too much bread again. Wow. It’s full of apples. The unmoving bird we saw at Rurikoin on Day 1—a grey heron. When it flies, it’s so graceful. A nearby café called Soirée. It opens at 1 PM. Let’s save it for next time. Keihan Main Line
Gion-Shijo → Tofukuji Walking through what looks like a shopping street in front of the station toward Tofukuji. There’s nobody here. We’ve arrived at Gaun Bridge, one of the three famous bridges of Tofukuji. It’s part of the approach and open to the public. Beyond the lush green maple trees is Tsuten Bridge, which connects to the main hall. I want to enter from over there (Rokuharamon). The toilet is on the left. Huh? That’s a toilet? Turns out it’s not a modern restroom, but a historical toilet called “Tōsu” — Japan’s oldest. Impressive. The Sanmon Gate at Tofukuji is the oldest existing one in Japan, and one of the three great gates. It’s a National Treasure. Beyond the gate is the main hall (serving as both Buddha Hall and Lecture Hall). It’s spacious. Surprisingly, we need to pick up the pace… We’d better keep moving. It’s wider than expected. Personally, I was most looking forward to the Hojo Garden, so we enter the Hojo (monk’s residence). Combination ticket (Hojo Garden + Tsuten Bridge + Kaisando) East Garden South Garden The Hojo has gardens on all four sides — east, west, south, and north — collectively called the “Eight Views Garden.” West Garden A large checkered pattern made with clipped azaleas and cut stones. North Garden From the large checkered pattern in the west to the small one in the north, the design continues seamlessly. The checkered pattern inherited from the west gradually fades toward the northeast using strategically placed stones. If I could be picky, I’d love to have come when the moss was more lush and green… You get a great view of Tsuten Bridge from between the West and North Gardens. It’s huge. Leaving the building, we continue exploring the spacious temple grounds. This is Engetsu Bridge, a wooden covered bridge, the most upstream of Tofukuji’s three famous bridges. Beyond this point is another paid admission area. Just when we thought we’d cross Tsuten Bridge, we went down the stairs to explore below. Hey, isn’t that the same bridge from earlier? Ah, I see! We came from over there— —and now we’re on this bridge… That’s probably Tsuten Bridge over that way. Oh, they’re chanting sutras. We could hear the chanting from Kaisando, located in the northern part of the temple grounds. Before we knew it, we had circled around to the other side of Tsuten Bridge. Now we’re finally crossing it—looking back toward the Hojo from the opposite direction. We came across several couples doing wedding photo shoots. So beautiful. You can see the roof of Gaun Bridge. In autumn, this place becomes one of Kyoto’s top spots for fall colors. I love the fresh green leaves, but I want to see the autumn foliage too. Let’s get moving. JR Nara Line
Tofukuji → Uji We’ve arrived in Uji—and we’re starving. There’s Nakamura Tōkichi over there. Uji means matcha. First, we’re heading into a café-slash-gift shop. Unbelievably, a 3-hour wait… We totally underestimated how packed Uji gets during Golden Week. At this rate, it’s almost certain we’ll miss lunch again. Maybe we’ll grab some souvenirs on the way back. Next stop: Byodoin Temple. Finally making my dream visit come true. Entrance to the bustling Omotesando shopping street. Uji Bridge The Uji River is a major river that flows from Lake Biwa and eventually becomes the Yodo River in Osaka. Compared to Tokyo’s rivers, the ones in Kyoto are so clean and refreshing… We’re on our way to Byodoin. In front of the tea shops, there’s a wonderful aroma of green tea and roasted tea… Only 50 yen a cup? All the restaurants and cafés are full—so we’re soothing our hearts with tea instead. Let’s at least have a drink. It’s sweet, huh? Yeah, it’s sweet. That sweet tea really hits the spot. The ticket counter at the main gate had a crazy long line,
so we walked around to the less-crowded South Gate… Totally underestimated it again. Good thing we did, though—we got our tickets smoothly at the South Gate. Is this the back side? The interior tour… …starts in an hour. Let’s go get a goshuin stamp while we wait. Oh wow, so cool. This person’s calligraphy is amazing. The bold “Hoo-do” characters really stir the heart of any calligraphy enthusiast. The wisteria trellises are in full bloom. Time for the interior tour. People are gathering at the meeting point. No photography inside… Well, we’ve seen everything… …and we’re still starving. Have you noticed?
This is the third day in a row we’ve missed lunch… We finally snagged a table in the super crowded café. Time to rest. Maruto Parfait (with tea) Under the matcha cream: sponge cake, mochi balls, chestnuts, rice crisps, and more… Maruto Drink A “drinkable Japanese tea dessert” with matcha, jelly, and cream inside. We may have missed lunch, but these matcha-packed sweets really satisfied our hearts and stomachs. Never underestimate the crowds at popular tourist spots.
Next time, we’ll plan more carefully… Three days in love with Kyoto. Now I want to learn even more about this city.
