小田急線・読売ランド前駅。その名とは裏腹に、遊園地の喧騒ではなく、丘陵の静寂が広がっていた。北にのぼる坂道の先、遠くに五重塔をのぞかせる香林寺へと向かう。道中、細く長い階段を登りきった丘の上には、見渡すかぎり住宅街。夜になれば、家々の灯がこの斜面を淡く照らすのだろう。細山神明社では、鎌倉時代から土地に根ざす祈りの名残が、ひっそりと社を支えていた。妙延寺に立ち寄れば、江戸から昭和へと場所を移した歴史と、現在は墓所として機能する日常が重なる。法性寺の境内には、小田急線の線路が走り、狭い墓地には無数の石が肩を寄せ合っている。町のなかで風景が祈りと交差し、静かな時間だけが流れていく。駅前に戻ると、寂れた商店街がぽつりと灯をともしていた。人の気配はまばらで、それでもそこには生活の匂いが残っている。何も起きない町で、何かが確かに積み重なってきた。そんな余白を、今日もまたひとり歩いていた。
