Food tour in Shizuoka, Japan! A gourmet guide to 12 foods to eat on your trip to Shizuoka
Hello. This time I came to Shizuoka. Shizuoka is a city between Tokyo and Nagoya, and can be reached by Shinkansen. This time I arrived in the evening of the previous day and enjoyed the local gourmet. I hope you enjoy your trip to Shizuoka until the end. Hello. Today I start from here. I am currently at Shimizu Station in Shizuoka Prefecture. Actually, this time I am coming to Shizuoka for work, and I am staying at Shizuoka Station tonight. I am taking a day off today. I arrived here while eating local gourmet food in Shizuoka from the east. I hope to be able to show you what happened during the day today on another occasion, but… This time, instead of the usual early start, I decided to start from Shimizu at night. So, I immediately arrived at “Kin no Ji Honten”, which was founded in 1950, in search of local gourmet food in Shimizu. I had never heard of a specialty called “Motsu Curry Stew” that can be enjoyed at a traditional and lively restaurant. I have eaten a lot so far today, so my stomach is quite full. I was looking forward to trying this, as I wanted to try it. And, of course, before that, I had this♪ Shizuoka beer that really brings out the local vibe, with a creamy foam. Wow, this is so good… This is Motsu Curry (190 yen/skewer) A skewer of motsu covered in plenty of curry. It looks like miso, but it smells exactly like piping hot curry, and it looks delicious. Now that all the players are here, let’s toast to the Shizuoka night! Phew, so good… after a day of running around, it really hits home. Now, let’s have the signature motsu curry. Wow! The curry is dripping. Excuse me, take 2. Ah, it’s delicious♪ The motsu is so soft, it melts in your mouth. The slightly bitter curry is very rich. The spicy aroma is addictive. This goes well with beer♪ The motsu curry was inspired by Nagoya’s dote-ni. Apparently, they made it curry flavored because they thought it would be popular with everyone. The motsu skewers are soaked in curry, so your hands get sticky when you hold them. So all the customers use the paper towels while eating. And the motsu curry is finished in no time, and it seems that each person orders about three skewers on average. Okay, I’ll order some other skewers♪ Next, I’ll order a combination of “akayaki” and “shiroyaki”. Akayaki is splendid organ (190 yen) It is also known as azuki bean and mamegimo. Shiroyaki is tripe (210 yen) I could choose salt or sauce, so I chose salt. The texture is crunchy and the sauce is rich. Apparently there is a Sapporo beer factory in Yaizu, Shizuoka, so the shops around here are also Sapporo Kingdom. It’s nice to have local beer so you can feel like you’re traveling. Shiroyaki too. Ah, this is delicious♪ It was juicier than I expected and the saltiness was perfect. Personally, it was a bigger hit than the motsu curry lol. I want to eat as many as I can. And for the second drink, I had tea, as is typical of Shizuoka. We also ordered a simple onion skewers. He also had his own role. We dipped the leftover curry into the onion skewers. The sweetness of the onions and the richness of the curry go perfectly together. The remaining crunchiness is also nice. We also ordered some pork garlic and pork hearts (210 yen each). We were also curious about the sauce for the shiroyaki, so we ordered some. By the way, we just walked in today, but it’s a popular restaurant, so it seems like it’s best to make a reservation. It seems like you can make reservations for skewers, so it’s probably best to reserve popular curries in advance. The tea-based drinks were also rich and delicious. It was refreshing and seemed good for the coming season. Still, it’s a good feeling just to be drinking in a seaside town lol. This year Shizuoka seems to be dominated by the taiga river. I feel like I’ve seen a lot of posters of this today. There are actually still many dishes I’m interested in, but considering the time and how hungry I am, I’ll stop here for today. I actually wanted to try the pork skewers, but it seemed like a lot, so I’ll save that for next time. Yes, it seems better not to go this time lol. I also have homework to do about Akaboshi, because it seems that Akaboshi is also good for curry stew. Still, I enjoyed the restaurant’s specialties to the fullest in a short time. The total bill was 2,820 yen, thank you for the meal! Now, there is only one more place in Shimizu. It’s been four years since I last came here in 2019, so I’ll enjoy it a little more. I walked another 10 minutes from Kane no Ji to an izakaya called “Kaneda Shokudo”. Shimizu is also the setting for the familiar anime and manga Chibi Maruko-chan. This restaurant is a favorite of the author, Momoko Sakura, and her father (Hiroshi). It actually appears in the anime and manga. So, is this a pilgrimage? I was curious about what kind of restaurant it was, so I went in. Here I ordered sake and a sashimi platter. I also ordered the Amera Tomato, which was recommended at the entrance. For sake, we ordered Yui’s “Ei-kun” (small, 600 yen). And there was a variety of sashimi♪ Clockwise from the top left, bonito, dragonfly tuna and bigfin tuna, sakura shrimp, horse mackerel, and swordfish. A great collection of fish that are typical of Shizuoka. Once the Amera tomatoes were all ready, we started eating. Yes, it was delicious♪ It was a little dry and refreshing, wasn’t it? So, let’s start with tuna, which is what Shimizu is all about♪ It’s a beautiful red. It’s delicious… just as smooth as I expected♪ And when you eat the sashimi after sipping the sake, it’s even more delicious♪ So, next up was dragonfly tuna and albacore. This one also melted in the mouth… The bonito was also thickly sliced and had a strong flavor. And the Amera tomatoes, which were born in Shizuoka Prefecture, are apparently 1/3 the size of a normal tomato. The name comes from the Shizuoka dialect “amaera (sweet)”. Ah, they really are quite sweet. The fruit tomato is delicious with a mild sourness. Sakura shrimp is always welcome, no matter how many times it comes out in a day. Even though it’s small, it has a strong sweetness when you bite into it. After enjoying a lot of sashimi by myself. I wanted to eat something with a strong flavor, so. I ordered tuna skewers (275 yen). It’s quite heavy when you hold it with sauce. It’s hot and you can’t chew it, but you can tell it’s delicious lol. It’s a thick tuna and onion skewer. I ate it all in one go while it’s still hot, and then had one last delicacy. What do you think this black stick is? It’s actually a dried dolphin that has been salted and dried. The dish itself is called “dolphin sauce”. When you hold it with chopsticks, it’s hard and the flesh seems to turn black as it dries. When you think of dolphins, Wakayama comes to mind, but it seems that you can also eat it in Shizuoka in Shimizu and Numazu. The texture is like beef jerky? The outside is hard, but it’s surprisingly easy to eat. The meat has a strong flavor, no unpleasant smell, and it’s not difficult to eat. You can eat it as a snack with shichimi mayonnaise. Apparently dolphins were a valuable source of protein during and after the war. They are still on sale in supermarkets in Shimizu, and by the way, these dolphins were caught off the coast of Iwaki. Next time I come, I’ll try the stewed dolphin, which has quite a strong smell. The restaurant that appears in Chibi Maruko-chan is a long-established restaurant that has been in business for four generations. The restaurant was filled with local people wearing suits on a weekday night. It was a lively and comfortable restaurant, and I enjoyed the food culture of Shimizu and the delicious fish. Ah, it was delicious… Oh, the Shizutetsu Railway is just around the corner. The JR bridge in front is also depicted on the Chibi Maruko-chan movie poster. I’m going to cross that bridge on the JR line and head to Shizuoka. By the way, before coming to Shizuoka on a business trip this time, I looked up some local gourmet food. Shizuoka is long from east to west, and there are many things that interest me from one end to the other. I’m planning to visit Shizuoka in different areas several times, regardless of my business trip. Today was the first of those trips, and I started from Fuji City and followed it all the way here. And when I tried to get on the train that arrived, it was an express train, and it seems that the express fare to Shizuoka is 760 yen. I was a little tired today, so I gave in to the temptation of the cross seats I saw and got on. By the way, from Shimizu to Shizuoka, it’s 240 yen for three stations, and the following local train is only about 10 minutes more. I don’t think I would normally use that distance and fare, but I was half in a traveling mood, so I was a little slow lol. I arrived in Shizuoka after a long time! The platform feels so wide. This time, I’m in Shizuoka until the day after tomorrow, so I’m going to eat and walk around in between work♪ Then, on the way to the hotel, I stopped by a shop. I came to this shop called “12 to go”. This is a direct store of “West Coast Brewing”, a craft beer brewery in Yomune, Suruga Ward. Not only can you drink in the store, but you can also take out WCB and overseas beers. I bought a bottle of beer called “The Collective Peach Cobbler” (1250 yen). By the way, there is a shop called “12 twelve” next door where you can drink with food. Of course you can drink at the shop, but actually I already bought souvenirs. I’m planning to have a party at the inn tonight♪ These are the souvenirs. Today I stopped by a shop called “Inariya NOZOMI” in Shimizu. There I bought “Sakura Ebisu” (620 yen) and “Inari and egg” (460 yen). So, let’s start with Sakura Ebisu. Oh, it’s red. Then, it got unevenly arranged while carrying it, so I rearranged it a bit. Let’s eat. It’s delicious, the popping pops fill my mouth♪. It’s been a while, but it’s crispy and fragrant. The Sakura Ebisu and the shredded egg are a perfect match. It’s so luxurious that you wouldn’t believe it’s only 620 yen. After enjoying the Sakura Ebisu for the third time today. Next, I ordered this Inari and egg. This one is also beautiful. I bought a little too much, but I couldn’t resist when I saw this visual lol. The egg sushi has an unusual shape. First, the familiar inari. The fried tofu in the sweet broth is delicious♪ The texture of the sesame and lotus root is also nice. And the egg, which I was curious about. But it has a beautiful brown color. Yes, it’s delicious♪ The gentle sweetness goes well with the vinegared rice. It’s quite light and I think I can eat it all in one go. Anyway, I haven’t tried the beer I just bought yet. I was told that the Peach Cobbler is a dessert beer, so I decided to drink it after dinner. This beer is characterized by its sweet and sour taste, which is due to lactic acid fermentation. It seems to contain peach juice, cinnamon, vanilla, etc., so I can only imagine it being sweet lol. It’s treated as a low-malt beer, so it certainly has a lot of ingredients. I can’t drink that much normally, so I thought I’d just have one bottle, a WCB staple. After hearing the explanation, I became interested and decided to try it. The aroma is vanilla-like and it looks sweet. Wow, it’s definitely quite sour. I can also really taste the peach. This certainly doesn’t go well with rice. This might be the first time I’ve ever had such a fruity beer. I was able to see the characteristics of the beer from this QR code. The color of the beer is also said to be distinctive, so I decided to pour it. It’s not very tasteful, but I’ll pour it into this cup for now. Wow, it’s a pretty orange color, cloudy, like vegetable juice. WCB releases a lot of new products every month, and sometimes half of them are replaced at the end of the month. If I come to Shizuoka again, I’d like to stop by and try a few things. After enjoying the dessert beer at the end , I went to bed. Anyway, it’s the second day of the day, and I’m going to start working hard from today. Before that, I’ll have a light snack to fill my stomach. I bought some snacks from a shop called “Nangakudo” yesterday. “Toripan” is a famous confectionery that has been around for about 150 years since the Meiji era. It’s called Toripan because it’s a bird-shaped bread. In the Meiji era, wheat flour that was kneaded and baked or steamed was called “bread”. I munched on it like this. The ingredients are flour, sugar, eggs, and baking soda, and it doesn’t contain any oil. It feels like eating a very hard cookie. Another bun. It has a cute shape. A chick-shaped filling inside a thin skin. Moist and not too sweet, it’s delicious♪ Today I had a light breakfast of buns and tea. Now I’m ready to go out! I’m going to enjoy the local gourmet food again today. Well, my morning work is over♪ I’ve arrived at the south exit of Shizuoka Station, on the opposite side of the hotel. Well, I’m going to attack the line that will probably be waiting for lunch today. It’s exactly 11 o’clock, the time the store opens. So I arrived at the store in question, but… There was a line after all lol It seems they just started to guide people inside the store. So I went to a restaurant called “Shimizu Port Minami”. I had heard that it was a very popular restaurant where you can eat delicious tuna, so I was prepared. The restaurant is on the second floor, and customers are lined up on the stairs, so we waited for 30 minutes while slowly going up. Finally, we arrived in front of the entrance♪ Once inside, we ordered right away. I was unsure of what to choose, but… Today is a day to splurge! I decided and ordered the bluefin tuna bowl, which is only available at Shimizu Port Minami. Here it is, it’s amazing. The menu said fatty tuna and lean tuna, but today, luckily, they had all three types♪ First, we had the green laver miso soup, which is from Ise-Shima. I love the crunchiness of green laver. Then, shall we have the main dish, the tuna♪ First, the lean tuna, which looks so fresh. Wow, so delicious… It’s moist, finely textured, and has a great texture. After all, when the lean tuna is delicious, it makes you feel like you’re eating good tuna. This makes me excited for the fatty tuna. This is too good… I want to savor it without thinking, but I’m busy wanting rice. After savoring the fatty tuna once again. I had my favorite fatty tuna for the main course. I could stare at the marbling forever. It was so shiny with fat. This was definitely the best… just the sweetness of the fat. The meat wasn’t too hard to chew, but had just the right amount of firmness, so I think this is the best I like. Of course, there was also the lean and fatty tuna, each with their own unique flavor. It was reasonably priced, and I’m sure there would be a line for it. I thoroughly enjoyed the Happy Bluefin Tuna Bowl. Very satisfied. Thank you for the meal! I’m so glad I came to Shizuoka… although I feel like it’s still a little early haha. I left the restaurant just around 12 o’clock, and it would have been fine if I’d only had to wait in line for an hour. Anyway, I was on my way to the next restaurant. There’s also a restaurant nearby called “Yaizu Port Minami” that’s part of the chain of the Shimizu Port restaurant I just visited. I’ll go and see how long the line is there. Oh, that’s right, this street is… This brings back memories. The shop was founded in 1963 and is called “Marushima Onigiri”. Unfortunately, it closed in December 2020. I actually visited it when I came to Shizuoka in 2019. After announcing its closure, it seems that customers from inside and outside the prefecture flocked to the shop. I was happy to reopen this nostalgic shop in an unexpected way, and even just seeing the sign still there. Oh, there’s no one in line here♪ It’s a weekday, but this might be a hidden gem. The shop was pretty crowded, but I think I could get a seat without waiting. I wonder if they have some of the sold-out menu items? There seems to be another shop at the north exit, Hitojukumachi, so I’ll go there next time. Now, I went under the overpass and headed to the north exit of the station. I walked a little and arrived at the next shop. There was also a line, but this one was unexpected. We came to a restaurant called “Meidaikatsudon Ozawa”. As the name suggests, we came here to eat their katsudon♪. They also serve beef bowls and curry, which are simple dishes that somehow build up expectations. I thought it would take a while to get here, but they turned over quite quickly. And as soon as we sat down, the katsudon arrived♪ They took our order while we were waiting in line, so it was fast. It looked delicious♪ I ordered loin katsu (800 yen). They also had fillet katsudon (850 yen), but personally I prefer loin. I ate it right away with miso soup. After my second bowl of miso soup for the day, I took a bite of the katsudon. It’s delicious♪ It really gets my appetite going. The combination of the hot, sweet batter and the soft katsu is the best. The rice soaked in the broth is also delicious. Apparently the katsudon at this restaurant also contains sauce along with the broth. Indeed, when you eat it, it has a rich sweetness that is characteristic of the sauce. This is the first time I’ve tasted this. The broth has a slight aroma of sauce and it’s delicious. The fat of the loin is juicy, needless to say. It’s been a while since I last ate it, but it’s still delicious. The restaurant has been in business for over 80 years, so it’s bright and clean, but it also has a nostalgic Showa-era feel. By the way, there were salarymen lined up at both Shimizuminato Minami and here, but they were dressed differently. Shimizuminato Minami was wearing a jacket and carrying a bag, so I thought he was at Shizuoka Station on a business trip or for business. This restaurant had a dress shirt and a long wallet, and looked like he had just come out of a nearby office for lunch. It’s a restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere that is familiar to locals. I finished the fresh-tasting katsudon while it was still hot to the last bite. Now, just one more place before work. I’m getting full, so I’ll have a light dessert to adjust my time. I came to a place called “Maruzen Tea Roastery”. They serve tea and tea gelato here. They make a variety of teas from the same tea leaves by changing the steaming method and roasting temperature. There is also a roasting machine inside the store to roast tea leaves at different temperatures. This time I ordered a set of tea and single gelato (850 yen). I was waiting at a seat on the second floor with a playing card instead of a numbered ticket. It’s here♪ Speaking of Shizuoka. it’s a lightly steamed cold sencha tea at 130 degrees. I chose coarse tea for the gelato. First of all, the tea. Yes, it’s delicious♪ It’s refreshing and easy to drink. And the gelato that caught my eye. Ah, what is this…? Ordinary matcha ice cream is smooth, but this is ice cream and tea leaves? It feels like the ice cream and tea leaves are separated. You can also feel the texture of the powder solidified like cookies and cream. The aroma of the tea is noticeable and the sweetness is quite modest? It may simply be that the way it is made and the proportions are different. Sorry, I may be wrong about a lot of things after eating so far lol. This is also a taste that I don’t remember. “Aracha” is a processed state of tea leaves that have been picked and steamed and dried. If the Aracha is further roasted, it becomes “sencha” or “hojicha”. The same tea leaves are roasted at 100℃ or 130℃ to become sencha, and at 160℃ or 200℃ to become fragrant hojicha. So, Aracha is unroasted tea leaves, and if they are ground and mixed in, it becomes “hojicha”. Aracha gelato is rare and not often lined up in tea shops. In addition, the taste changes depending on the steaming time of the tea leaves before becoming Aracha, such as “shallow steaming” or “deep steaming”. I was able to learn a lot about tea while enjoying desserts at a shop directly managed by a tea wholesaler. It was a shop that was typical of Shizuoka, a major tea producing area. Thank you for the meal! Okay! I’ve filled my stomach, so I’m going to work♪ I’ll work and get hungry again as the night approaches. So, after finishing work, it’s my second night in Shizuoka. Again, I head for the restaurant I was looking for in search of something delicious♪ Only a few seconds have passed in the video, but I’m full because I’m at the end of work. And I arrived at an area called “Aoba Yokocho”. Shizuoka’s specialty is “Shizuoka oden”, and Aoba Yokocho is an area lined with oden restaurants. First of all, I came here to try Shizuoka oden. Unfortunately, the restaurant I was interested in was fully booked… However, it seems that it will be available around 8:20 pm when the service ends, so I asked for one person♪ So I have to kill about an hour and a half until then. The izakaya I was interested in was relatively close by, so I decided to pop in. The name of the restaurant is “Takakoku”, a long-established izakaya founded in 1923. This time, I was able to slip into the restaurant, which was full of office workers after work♪ Once I calmed down, I ordered immediately. I had a beer♪ I chose Akaboshi (715 yen). Well, thank you for your hard work today. It’s delicious♪ It’s the kind of bliss that only comes with this time of day. While waiting for the food we ordered to arrive, we enjoyed the appetizers. We slowly enjoyed the atmosphere of the restaurant with a cold beer. First, we ordered pork negimaki (506 yen). As expected, when I see pork, I order it quite often♪ It’s quite large and looks like it will be filling. Delicious♪ The saltiness is irresistible. This makes me want a beer. It’s an endless loop that permeates my tired body. As long as it has this sweet and juicy fat, I can’t stop recommending pork skewers. And sashimi♪ Recently, I’ve been having a lot of opportunities to eat Spanish mackerel (1,320 yen). I had the same thing in Okayama the other day, and recently in Kyoto, where I had the best one. So, it’s become one of my favorites now. This one is soft♪ The flavor is rich. I slowly savor this with my beer. I’m starting to feel like moving. I can’t forget that it’s 8:20, so I think I’ll call it a day with just one more dish. I was curious about the unfamiliar “Umi Tsubo” and “Nagarami” so… This time I ordered Umi Tsubo. It’s a type of clam and is often eaten in Shizuoka. First, use a toothpick. Be careful not to cut it in the middle… Good, good, you got it cleanly. Delicious♪ It’s crunchy. Is it boiled in salt? It’s delicious even without anything. The innards are also rich. Eeeek. Ah. If you make a mistake, try to rescue it as much as possible lol. Okay, there are still many menus that I’m interested in, but that’s all for today. An oasis that is indispensable after work, I’d like to have a leisurely drink in a place like this again. Well, it’s not good to be late, so I’m leaving myself plenty of time. Just a little bit to stop by a shop that caught my eye on the way to the oden restaurant. I saw a coffee stand called “hugcoffee Konyamachi Store” so I stopped by. I found the thickest matcha shake in the universe that I mentioned earlier lol. But there are many other menus that I’m interested in. And the title of the best in the universe is in my hands♪ It’s said to be 9 times the usual amount of matcha, so I’ll try it first. Yes, it’s delicious♪ It’s rich, isn’t it? It has the richness and bitterness of matcha, and it’s easy to understand that it’s in a different layer from the shake. And of course, the overall taste was sweet and comforting lol. By the way, there is also a shop nearby that sells the world’s richest matcha ice cream. I’ve been to that shop before in Asakusa, so I stopped by here this time. This shop is also in the downtown area, and even though it was night, many people came to buy it. It’s the kind of shop that makes you want to stop by, and I quickly enjoyed the best matcha shake in the universe. Now, shall we go eat some Shizuoka oden♪ The lights stand out when the sun goes down. Aoba Yokocho has an indescribable atmosphere as the curtains of night fall. Among these, there is one restaurant I wanted to go to. It was this “Mikawaya” restaurant, which was at the very front. This long-established restaurant, which started as a food stall in 1948, has a great atmosphere. I sat down at the table in front of me with a pot of oden. And before the oden, the food started with fried food. That huge lotus root is about to be fried. And the sake was Shizuoka-wari. The lotus root was added soon♪ It’s big, it must be delicious. Let’s toast with Shizuoka-wari. Delicious ♪ The tea here is refreshing lol. As a result, I drink tea in various forms other than Maruzen. So I’ll have the piping hot lotus root. This is delicious ♪ It’s thick and crunchy, and very satisfying to eat. And there was another fried food I ordered. I also wanted to eat this black fish cake fries. Wow, this is super delicious… I never thought that the soft black fish cake would go so well with the punchy sauce and batter. The black fish cake inside also had a strong fishy flavor. It was surprisingly delicious, just like the fried maple leaves in Hiroshima. And after finishing the remaining lotus root… Well, it’s about time to eat some oden♪ We ordered beef tendon and a second serving of black fish cake. Shizuoka oden is characterized by being topped with green laver and dashi powder. We put plenty of both on. We ate it right away. It’s so soft and chewy♪ It’s so delicious. And while we were eating the oden, another thing came. Grilled chicken liver skewers♪ The oden broth was pitch black, but the taste was surprisingly not too strong and delicious. The flavor of the dashi powder was also good. The black fish cake was well soaked in the broth. It tasted more like fish as it was. And before we knew it, the restaurant was full. With a capacity of eight people, the distance between the owner and the customers naturally became closer in a full restaurant. Another customer ordered this skewer before us, and the waiter came round, asking, “Would you like some too?” Today, there were probably only locals around, but even if you’re alone, you can feel comfortable here. And the menu other than oden is also delicious ♪ I’d like to try various things when I come again. I left the restaurant after enjoying the taste of this long-established restaurant in a relaxed atmosphere. Ah, it was delicious…By the way, the bill was 1,550 yen. There was also a signature of Momoko Sakura, and it stood out because it had an illustration. It’s a popular restaurant, so it seems that it’s better to make a reservation before going. Well, there’s only one more place today. I walked about 10 minutes from Mikawaya to the south side of the station. I came to a Chinese restaurant called “Shin-Shinkyo”. I’m going to have a drink here to finish off the day. There are various menus, but I’ve already decided on what I want today. I’m going to have this Viet Cong ramen. It’s nice, it looks delicious. There were four flavors, but I chose miso today. Let’s start with the soup while it’s hot. Ah, it’s delicious…It tastes good. It’s a thick soup that makes the noodles and vegetables taste better. The noodles are chewy and delicious. The soup is spicy and makes you sweat. And Viet Cong ramen is full of vegetables and garlic. I thought that miso would go best with these vegetables♪ I could eat this forever. It is said that Viet Cong ramen originated from a restaurant called “Xinjing” in Aichi Prefecture. This restaurant is called “Xin-Xinjing” so I wasn’t sure if there was a connection. I went in because it is open until 2am and is popular with locals. Furthermore, Viet Cong ramen is basically soy sauce, but this restaurant has four types, so I tried miso. The vegetables are delicious and it’s an addictive favorite taste♪ I finished the last bowl at a leisurely pace. Phew, I’m full… By the way, Viet Cong ramen is an abbreviation for “Best Condition Ramen”. So it’s a stamina-filled ramen with plenty of garlic. So, with the energy stored up at the end of the day, that’s all for today! Please check back next time. Please also see the next video!
