Hello everyone! I’m in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture! I took the Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka Station to Fukuyama Station, then changed to a local train for a 1 hour 45 minute train ride. This time, I’ll start in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, cycle through six islands, and head to Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture. The recommended course is 70km and takes 4-10 hours, but I’ll do some sightseeing in a 2-day, 1-night trip. I’ll rent a bike at the cycling terminal near Onomichi Station. Electric assisted bicycle E-BIKE! So cool! Cross bike City bike If you are a healthy adult, we recommend a cross bike. Helmet rental is free. The boat pier for Mukojima, near the cycling terminal, is already crowded with cyclists! The Shimanami Kaido is a mecca for cyclists from all over the world! I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of trip it will be☺ Let’s set sail! An electric bicycle with a carrier! Great for people with lots of luggage. The fare is US$0.7 and payment is by cash only. You pay on the boat. The ride is short. We arrive at the first island, Mukojima. Everyone starts setting off one after the other. The blue line on the road is the cycling course. Ride along the blue line. There are many buildings around the dock, and it’s the center of town. After a while, the number of buildings decreased and the scenery became more open. The weather is cloudy, and the temperature is comfortable, neither hot nor cold. The road is flat, so it’s easy on the body. I hope it continues like this… I took a break and took some photos at a park where I could see the first bridge, the Innoshima Ohashi Bridge. What a nice view. From here on, I’ll be crossing six bridges connecting the islands. Looking up from below, I can see that it’s a big bridge. The entrance to the bridge is high up, so there’s a slope before the bridge!! The upper road of this bridge is for cars, and the lower road is for cyclists and pedestrians only. For safety reasons, there is a fence. The exit of the bridge is an easy downhill climb, so it’s easier than the climb at the entrance. Oops, that was dangerous. We stopped at the popular shop “Hassaku-ya” at the foot of the bridge. They are famous for their hassaku daifuku, so there are probably a lot of customers on weekends. The Seto Inland Sea is famous for its citrus fruits. They don’t just have daifuku, they also have soft serve ice cream. I bought hassaku daifuku and strawberry daifuku. The hassaku daifuku has a perfect balance of sweetness and the bitterness of hassaku. The outer layer of gyuhi is soft and has a nice texture♡ I wonder what strawberry daifuku tastes like? Hmm!? This is…! So delicious!!! The strawberries are so sweet!!! Look, they’re very juicy. Personally, I prefer strawberries to hassaku. Sorry. I resumed cycling. I pedaled while passing cyclists coming from the Imabari area. The nature was beautiful. It was 11 o’clock, so I took a break and had lunch. When you come to Hiroshima, you want to eat okonomiyaki! I ordered the Nikutama and the recommended Hormone Nikutama. The prices are reasonable. I’m grateful. It’s healthy to use a lot of cabbage. The meat and noodles are on top of the cabbage. Wow! What amazing techniques!!! I never get bored of watching it. This is the skill of a pro!!! Ahhh!!! Even if you fail, you can recover. Oh! Done!! It looks delicious with the offal on top!! It’s pretty big. This is a meatball without the offal. Cut it into pieces using a spatula. It’s filled with lots of cabbage and noodles, and looks delicious♡ It was delicious. It was a very satisfying lunch. With a full stomach, I resumed cycling. The second bridge is Ikuchibashi. Before crossing the bridge, I stop by a shrine I want to visit. I’ve arrived at Oyama Shrine. A magnificent sacred tree It’s only natural that a shrine on the Shimanami Kaido has a bicycle stand like this! Oyama Shrine is famous as a bicycle shrine. Bicycle-shaped votive plaques are offered here, and you can purchase amulets for road safety. I’ll pray for a safe two-day journey. This is a magnificent main hall. It was apparently selected as one of the 100 Japanese shrines visited by successful people! I wonder if I can be successful too? I discovered an interesting shop before crossing the second bridge!! It’s a farmer’s cafe at the entrance to the slope leading to the bridge. It’s an experiential cafe where you can drink orange juice you’ve squeezed yourself. I asked the farmer about the characteristics of different kinds of oranges and made my own orange juice. The taste changes depending on the orange you choose, so it’s hard to decide which one to choose! Cut it in half to make it easier to get the juice out. Very colorful and cute♡ Manually squeeze the halved orange. Lots of juice came out!! There was so much juice that it couldn’t fit in the cup, so I squeezed it while drinking it lol The fresh juice experience was more fun than I expected ♪ US$5.50 is cheap for cookies, cake, and candied fruit!! We were also given complimentary hot tea. I’m so happy to be able to enjoy the beautiful view while enjoying fresh orange juice and sweets☺ Unfortunately, they are only open for a short period in March and April, so please check their Instagram beforehand. Everyone is working hard to climb the hill. It’s about time for me to get up too. Recharge your energy with orange juice! I’ll work hard and climb the hill again! The second bridge is Ikuchi Bridge. I’ve made a bit of a detour. I’ll hurry on. The slope is steep… I’ve finally reached Ikuchi Bridge. It’s not a very big bridge, less than 1 kilometer long. I’ve arrived at Kosanji Temple. Nearby is the Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Japanese painter, and there are restaurants and lodgings, so it may be the center of the island. Kousanji Temple was built by Kozo Kosanji, who ran a business in Osaka, and became a monk, spending his entire life building it from 1935. Since it was built in 1935, I think it is relatively new as a temple. You need to pay an entrance fee to enter the grounds. I wanted to see Miraishin Hill, but I didn’t know it was on the grounds of a temple. I didn’t do enough research. Unfortunately, I made too many detours and didn’t have enough time to look around the large grounds, so I didn’t go in. I’ve only introduced its existence. The road lined with palm trees is reminiscent of California. The calm sandy beach stretches out. I can see the third bridge in the distance. It is the longest cable-stayed bridge in Japan (a structure in which cables are stretched diagonally from towers and directly connected to the bridge beams). This is the slope we walk up to the bridge every time. It’s pretty tough for the third time today! Oh, please let me ride too!!! It’s been six hours since we left, and I’m starting to get tired. Seeing the beautiful scenery of Shimana-mi helps ease my fatigue a little. I buy tonight’s midnight snack at a shop in Omishima run by an owner who moved here from Tokyo. I arrive just before closing time at 4pm! I can eat inside the shop, but it’s still too early for dinner, so I get takeout. “Omishima Limone” is a 3-minute walk from the previous shop. It’s a shop I really wanted to visit!! This shop sells citrus fruits from the Seto Inland Sea. The store is lined with citrus drinks! There are many lemon-themed goods for sale. Yakiniku sauce made with lemon Sauce with the aroma of white truffle Ponzu sauce in a cute bottle Dressing “Limoncello,” a drink made with organic lemons from Omishima, would make a great souvenir! You can order drinks inside the store and drink them on the cute benches outside. I ordered a lemonade, named after the shop. If you look closely, you’ll see that the stirrer is a giraffe! So cute♪ We’re crossing the fourth and final bridge of the day. It’s only 328 meters, so the islands are close together. We should be able to get to the inn before dark. There are biker gangs going downhill. We’ve arrived at “HANAGURI”, where we’ll be staying tonight. It’s convenient because it’s close to the bridge, but As you can see, there’s nothing around, so I recommend buying dinner beforehand. There are no staff at the inn, and the entrance code will be emailed to you in advance. Check-in is also done using a tablet. You can also park your bike inside the building. The floor is concrete, and the interior is very simple, but not old-fashioned. The room we’ll be staying in is on the second floor. The room keys are also combination locks. You can enter the room with your shoes on. Luggage stand and sandals Room wear Towels Double bed Air purifier Desk Single bed TV Japanese tea and coffee Electric kettle, glasses, cups There is drinking water in the fridge Mirror Stayed on Sunday for 2 people, US$70. This is very convenient. Most of the guests were from overseas, but the electrical outlets were Japanese style. Checking the toilet The walls and floors are tiled. It’s been remodeled to have a washlet. It’s nice that there’s a window and it’s bright. Women’s shower room The sink looks clean. Hair dryer Toothbrush Hair comb Razor Sanitary products Cotton buds No face wash or lotion. It’s nice to have a spare bath mat! The shower booth was nice and clean, but I was worried about how small it was inside. Body soap, shampoo, conditioner Shared lounge Microwave Water server that also dispenses hot water I’d like to eat the dinner I bought here. There were various side dishes, but they got mixed up when I was shaking on the bike lol It was seasoned like Thai food. Rice seasoned with seasoning It came with miso soup and cost 1000 yen. Today’s distance was about 60 km, and it took 7 hours and 30 minutes from Onomichi to the hotel. It’s a beautiful morning with the birds singing. I’m going to follow the blue line again today and aim for the finish line! I stopped off at the roadside station Hakata S.C. Park. The view from here is great. Various kinds of citrus fruits are sold at the entrance. It’s a shame that my bike doesn’t have a luggage rack… I ordered Ehime’s B-class gourmet dish, “char siu egg rice.” The bright orange color of the yolk is appetizing. Char siu is placed underneath the egg. The sauce is sweet. I really like the seasoning. Delicious!!! This is salt ramen made with Hakata salt. The salt soaks into your sweaty body! Lol When exercising, salt is better than tonkotsu. I liked the refreshing taste. I had soft serve ice cream for dessert. I chose the soft serve ice cream made with Hakata salt. It wasn’t particularly salty, just a normal, tasty soft serve ice cream. What a nice view. A great photo spot♡ I’m back on my bike. I can see the fifth bridge in the distance. Every time I go up the hill to the bridge, I wonder why people go to the trouble of riding a bicycle 70km when they already have a convenient vehicle called a car. There is an uninhabited island in the middle of the bridge, and you can get off there. We drive along the beach of the last island, Oshima. It feels great. I feel great! The sea water is very clear and beautiful. What is that? ? Long ago, there were pirates in the Seto Inland Sea, and there is a pirate museum on Oshima. The island is peaceful now. The last bridge is in sight. It’s 4km long. I’m climbing up the hill again towards the bridge. Hang in there, me!! The hill continues in a spiral. It’s tough!! I made it to the top in one go! This is the longest and biggest bridge I’ve ever crossed. This bridge, which is about 4 kilometers long, is said to be the world’s first triple suspension bridge. View from the bridgeThe scenery is truly Shimanami Kaido!! The blue sky and calm sea are a beautiful sight! Just beyond the bridge is the Imabari Shipyard. At the restaurant where I bought dinner yesterday, I talked to an old man who used to be the factory manager here. The ships are big and impressive up close. We’ve arrived at Sunrise Itoyama. All that’s left now is to cycle around the city towards Imabari Station. After passing through the city, we arrived at Imabari Station. The cycling terminal is right next to Imabari Station. This is where you can rent and return bikes. The procedure is done at the reception in the building on the right. Opening hours are from 8am to 8pm. It’s time to say goodbye to my bike that worked so hard with me for two days. I’m feeling attached to it and sad. Taiwanese bicycle manufacturer Giant has stores in both Onomichi and Imabari where you can rent bikes. The store in Onomichi was fully booked, but it looks like you can rent one in Imabari. There is a tourist information center next to the cycling terminal. They have pamphlets about the Shimanami Kaido in various languages, so please visit. What did you all think? It was a tough two days, but a lot of fun. I would like to ride again if I have the chance. But next time I’ll rent an electric bike lol
