It is unknown when Youn-ji Temple was founded, but it is said that it already existed in the 1260s. Pass through the residential area and aim for Tamagawa Gakuen-mae Station. It’s a strange building. ツツジの花が揺れていた。静かな町の片隅、東京都町田市の玉川学園前駅を歩き出すと、日常の音が遠のき、恩田川の流れが耳を満たした。石畳を踏みしめながら、住宅街の中にひっそりと佇む宏善寺へ。明治の仁王門、江戸の金剛力士像、現代の芝庭――時代の断層がひとつの境内に同居していた。さらに歩けば養雲寺。いつ植えられたかも定かでない木々の間を風が抜け、新緑が陽を弾く。鳥の声と足音だけが聞こえるその道は、駅前の人工的な静けさへと通じていた。
商業の喧騒はなく、聞こえるのは生活の気配。突如現れる奇妙な建物も、ピカチュウのような置物も、この町の静けさのなかではどこかやさしく見える。観光地ではない、だがそこに暮らしと歴史がある。日蓮宗の古刹も、すれ違う子どもたちも、都市の輪郭に沿って並んでいた。こうした対照の連なりが、東京郊外の今を形づくっている。歩くことでしか出会えない風景。静寂と気配が交錯する瞬間を、あなたも見届けてほしい。
