Yamato Town, Kamimashiki District Description of Goroga Falls. There are 48 waterfalls in Yamato Town, Kamimashiki District, and the largest of these is Goroga Falls. This is a waterfall with a drop of about 50m, located on the Gorogataki River, which used to be called Todoroki River. About 150 meters upstream is the Tsujun Bridge, a national important cultural property, which has also been made into a park. A suspension bridge has been installed downstream from the basin of the waterfall, allowing visitors to get a panoramic view of the entire waterfall from the bridge. There is an abundant amount of water, and on sunny days, rainbows appear around the falls, adding to the mystical atmosphere. This spot is so scenic that it was selected as one of the “100 Famous Scenic Spots of Kumamoto.” The name is said to have come from the fact that when the Aso family, who ruled this area, entertained envoys from the Imperial Court, they “saw” the waterfall, which eventually evolved into “saw (goroujita).” Previously, it was possible to go down to the basin at the bottom of the waterfall, but the passage was damaged in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake and was closed at the time of our visit.
