We’ve arrived in Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture. This is Tokoname’s Maneki-neko Street. Various beckoning cats are displayed on the walls. From here, it’s the pottery walkway. An old maze-like town remains. Subtitles are kept to a minimum. Subtitles will be added to explain distinctive features. Something unusual has caught our eye. Pipes are used for retaining walls. There are cats here too. These are pottery plates made by children. They’ve made a wall using pipes. These are water lily pots. The frog design is cute too. That’s a red brick chimney. The chimney tops are cut off for safety in case of collapse. There’s a large beckoning cat. Its name is “Tokonyan”. There are cats around it. Even in the distance. There are chimneys here too. Even small pipes are embedded in the road. There are pipes here too. We’ve arrived at Denden Slope. The round ones in the back are shochu bottles. Square pipes with round holes in them are for electrical wires. These are bases used when baking pipes. We’ve reached Pipe Slope. The left side is pipes. The right side is shochu bottles. The bottom is a base for baking pipes. We’ve reached the climbing kiln plaza. There are ten chimneys. The chimneys at both ends are longer. To ensure even temperature throughout the kiln. Let’s take a look inside. Pottery was baked in here. That’s the stoke hole. There are eight kilns lined up. There are kilns and chimneys. The retaining walls of pipes and bottles continue. Crossing the bridge and going down the slope, it’s the end of the pottery walkway.
日本6古窯の一つ、常滑の古い町並みを歩きました。
常滑は、古くから瓶や鉢など大きな陶器の産地でした。
明治以降においては、日本の近代化に必要な土木資材として土管などを多く生産していました。
近年においては、急須などの茶器、食器、植木鉢、衛生陶器、招き猫などを生産しています。
生産の効率化のため、工場が郊外に移動したことにより、やきもの散歩道には、古くからのレンガの煙突、窯と古い町並みが残されています。
常滑駅や中部国際空港から近いこともあり、多くの外国人が訪れています。
