德瑞旅行Vlog|少女峰|黃金景觀列車|蒙特勒|西墉古堡|Day 5-6
At that moment, I suddenly felt so small. When faced with such majestic scenery, I had to remind myself not to forget to breathe. The cable car arrived quickly at the Eiger Glacier Station, about 3,160 meters above sea level. We even stepped outside for a bit. It was actually my first time stepping on snow in my life. I was so excited! The next morning, our group headed to Jungfrau. I even saw a train pass by right in front of the hotel. I almost forgot we were already over 1,000 meters above sea level. Then we went to Grindelwald Terminal to board the Eiger Express. The tour guide suggested drinking Red Bull. Personally, I thought it was quite effective. At least I didn’t experience any altitude sickness the whole way. You might give it a try. Buy a can when you’re at the terminal. Oh! Right— I saw a giant white quartz crystal at the terminal. As a crystal lover, I was totally glued to it. I didn’t want to leave! There was even a sign on the pillar showing how many meters deep it was mined from—super cool! It takes only 15 minutes from Grindelwald to Eiger Glacier Station. Surprisingly, the cable car had more space than expected. There are 4 rows of seats in total, and our entire group fit in comfortably. The Eiger Express cableway took 8 years to plan and build. It officially opened in December 2020. The total route is about 6.5 kilometers. There are 44 cabins in total. Each cabin can accommodate about 30 people. The panoramic windows are quite spacious. It feels like you’re inside a 360-degree dream bubble. The scenery beneath your feet is fully visible. The ride wasn’t shaky at all— super smooth. The weather that day was exceptionally sunny. The sunlight was dazzling. Let’s take a moment of silence here so everyone can truly enjoy the view. At first, it still looked like a fairytale forest village. Then it quickly turned into a snowy wonderland. From this angle, you’re looking directly at the north face of the Eiger. At that moment, I suddenly felt so small. When faced with such majestic scenery, I had to remind myself not to forget to breathe. The cable car arrived quickly at the Eiger Glacier Station, around 3,160 meters above sea level. We even stepped outside for a while. It was my very first time walking on snow. I was so excited! Next, we were welcomed by the Jungfrau cogwheel train. Taking this train brings you up to 3,454 meters in elevation— the highest railway station in all of Europe. This cogwheel train also marks a major milestone in human railway engineering. Can you imagine? The entire track is 9 kilometers long, and three-quarters of it runs beneath glaciers, through rocky tunnels. You can imagine how challenging that construction must have been. Stepping out of the station, the first thing you see is the Aletsch Glacier. Wow— Mmm… remember to breathe! The cracks in the ice were formed by massive pressure. They’re evidence of how the glacier has moved over time. They say this glacier shrinks in size a little more each year. It has even been listed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. Right in front of us is the famous “Top of Europe”— Jungfrau itself. You might wonder why it’s called “Jungfrau,” or “Maiden.” According to locals from the Bernese Highlands, the first snow every year always falls on Jungfrau. The first snow symbolizes purity and new beginnings, which inspired the mountain’s name. There’s also another legend about Jungfrau. Legend has it the old man Eiger tried to harass the maiden, so God placed a monk in between to protect her. Kind of a fun tale too! At the nearby Sphinx Observation Deck, you get an even clearer view of the longest glacier in Europe—Aletsch Glacier. Quick travel tip here— After visiting Jungfrau, go downstairs to the watch counter for a limited-edition Jungfrau watch. After seeing the sacred Jungfrau, it’s time for us mere mortals to have some fun. The Ice Palace is actually really big. Highly recommend going inside to explore! Later I saw so many people writing postcards, so I mailed one to myself too. We had lunch at a scenic restaurant. Chicken leg with fries. Not exactly gourmet. But with the unbeatable glacier view outside the window, it was still a pretty enjoyable meal. On the way back down by cable car, lastly, I took one final shot of the stunning Alps. It felt like saying goodbye to a group of beautiful young girls in their prime. Back at the hotel, our tour guide brought us to one of his secret spots. We saw sheep raised by local families. They were so cute! We left Grindelwald and continued by tour bus to one of the highlights of our trip— a ride on the GoldenPass panoramic train. The full route is divided into three segments. We took the first and second segments. Side note: When I was there, I saw a train with a bear logo. It seemed like a different route altogether. Not entirely sure— if you know, feel free to leave a comment below! The seats were quite spacious inside. And the panoramic windows were huge. No need to worry about comfort. What makes the GoldenPass train special is that it’s perfect for traveling in all four seasons. Spring offers lakes and valleys. Summer shows you flowers and trees. Autumn brings red and golden leaves. And winter feels like stepping into a Frozen fairytale. No matter when you visit, you’ll enjoy a different scenic charm. We traveled during spring, so we saw green hills and pastures. With snow-capped Alps in the distance. The huge panoramic windows made the contrast of views feel like a constant visual thrill. On the GoldenPass train, every seat comes with a guided audio headset. When you pass a notable landmark, you’ll hear a chime in the cabin reminding passengers to put on their headphones. I thought that was a very nice touch. You can switch to different channels, with different languages and background music. This setup helps visitors feel even more immersed in the scenery before them. I think Taiwan’s rail tourism could definitely take a page from this! From time to time, you can spot cows grazing outside the window. During the entire GoldenPass ride, the first hour was all about admiring mountains and distant snowy peaks. The second half entered a region of vast mountains and lakes. Montreux is a city located by Lake Geneva. It’s known as the Pearl of Lake Geneva. It’s actually also the starting point of the GoldenPass line. Walking along Montreux’s lakeside promenade, every photo turns out looking like a painting. A lake beneath the snowy Alps, with grand mountains from the French side across the lake— all radiating a peaceful and serene atmosphere. So elegant and refined. At the time, I saw so many plants rarely found in Taiwan, including beautiful tulips. If you’re traveling independently, Montreux is definitely worth a full-day stop. Just to enjoy the chill atmosphere. Especially after several days abroad, constant movement can be really exhausting. That’s when a city like Montreux becomes a much-needed place to pause. Every July, Montreux hosts its famous jazz festival. You can even see a statue of Freddie Mercury from Queen in the plaza. Next, we arrived at Chillon Castle, built in the 11th century. It’s one of Switzerland’s most historic buildings. It was built atop a massive rock. Originally used as an arsenal, the site held strategic military value. It was later converted into a royal residence, which lasted for four centuries. Over 200 prisoners were once held here. One of them was François Bonivard. He was a 15th-century priest advocating Geneva’s independence. He was later imprisoned here. Chained to one of the large columns, with a movement range of less than one meter. He endured six whole years of such torturous confinement, just to fight for freedom for his people. Later, British poet Lord Byron visited centuries later and learned of this story. He was moved to write a world-famous poem: *The Prisoner of Chillon.* A work that reminds us all of the value of freedom, which made Chillon Castle world-renowned. Why did I take the time to share this history? Because honestly, the castle itself isn’t that large. But beyond the structure, it’s what it endured— the historical weight it carries. If you don’t understand that, you’ll really be missing out. I still remember getting back on the tour bus, my mind replaying the scene in the dungeon— seeing the priest chained to that pillar. His suffering was so heart-wrenching, I teared up and couldn’t stop for a long while. That’s why I wanted to share it with you. Didn’t expect this episode to end on such an emotional note. Next episode, we’re heading to Zermatt! If you enjoy videos like this, feel free to subscribe. See you next time!
