Snow adventure in Japan, Mt. Naeba backcountry skiing
After the Hakkaisan tour, Nagai-san invited me to try Mt. Naeba backcountry in mid-April. We left Tokyo at midnight and arrived in Tsunan around 4 AM. Started the hike around 5 AM—five hours of hiking definitely took a toll. I struggled hard on the final ascent with crampons and had to be helped up.
But the view from the summit of Mt. Naeba was absolutely insane. You can see all of Kagura Ski Resort from up there. And even better than the view—the slopes of Naeba were incredible. Right after one of the best moments of the season, I had the biggest crash of my life! Couldn’t see the debris at all (lol).
Even including the five-hour hike up, Mt. Naeba’s backcountry has so much to offer—totally worth it, especially with that epic tree run on the way down.
