Quiet Morning Walk through Nakasendo Post Town to Hilltop Tsumago Castle Site | Nagano, Japan

Tsumago is one of 69 post towns along the Old Nakasendo, an Edo Period walking highway from Kyoto to Tokyo. These days it is popular for visitors to walk to or from Magome, another post town about 9km to the south. The old wooden buildings along the walking road are house shops, inns, eateries during the day to cater to the many walkers passing through. I thought it would be interesting to explore the town and a bit of the Nakasendo outside of town in the early hours, before anyone was out and about. I hope you enjoy this look at a beautiful little town.

  1. Надзвичайно атмосферна прогулянка, яке ж прекрасне місце. Дякую за чудове відео!

  2. Beautiful, thank you! Why is the town utterly deserted? I didn’t see a single person. It’s almost like a ghost town.

  3. Great vicarious travel videos. Another great post town further up the Nakasendo is Narai. I climbed the Tori Pass from Yabuhara to Narai. There are places to stay in Narai, but everything closes around 5 p.m. and there aren't many trains, so plan carefully. The path up to the castle ruins is typical of the way the Nakasendo looked during the Edo era. For a really "authentic" experience try doing this with the straw sandals they wore–you can find these in Magome and Tsumago. Imagine carrying a passenger in a palanquin or carrying packs of merchandise up and down these trails. Who needs cross-fit?
Castle ruins in Japan are almost always a disappointment, unlike in Europe. There's rarely anything left. One wonders what happened to the stones in the foundation if there were any…

  4. I see that you used to shoot on osmo pocket – are these still from them? these footages are great!

  6. Wow!! The mountains surrounding the village are Incredible! I also enjoyed the walk along the road, the bamboo forest was lovely.

Do you walk through the areas before hand to familiarize yourself before filming? You must travel around a lot!

  7. I’m writing a book that is set in a fictional town almost exactly like this one. I can’t believe how a like it is from my imagination. I don’t know why I attempted to do this given I’ve never been there before. I would love to visit japan, and its gorgeous misty mountain towns and villages. Heck id live there if i could speak Japanese
