Making 20 Grand USD a MONTH selling SALAD from just 7 square meters

Take a bite, it’s seriously delicious! I’m heading out! Even though it’s only a small shop, when I hear customers say things like ‘the atmosphere is great’ or ‘the staff is wonderful,’ it makes me incredibly happy. God Morning! The temperature here outside… it’s probably not even hitting 10°C (50°F), I think. It’s cold. Right!? We’re basically a salad shop The shop is really cramped. We’re running the whole place in this really small space. Why do you remove the inside of the tomatoes? If we leave it in, the salad gets too watery. It makes the dressing thin and diluted. So, we just take out the extra moisture. Hello, we’re here to do some filming. Thanks for having us. Nice to meet you! What? You’re the channel owner? This is my mom. Looking forward to working together today. Is there a special way you do this by hand? Yeah, since we thoroughly sharpen our knives, we don’t damage the fibers of the veggies, which keeps everything fresh. This really makes a difference. Hello, thanks for having us today! Oh for real! Nice to meet you! Thank you! I recently cut my hair. It was super long before! My role here? Yeah, what’s your role here? Operations? Ah, kind of like the behind-the-scenes boss? No that’s her! Nah I’m working in the front as well. We actually have a lot of “hidden bosses” here. These are all daikon radishes. We’ve got green, red, and white ones. Today, we’re using them as seasonal toppings. It’s 10:15 AM. We’ve already got about 10-15 orders in. In average we get 100 orders a day. Good morning! Thank you for today! I went shopping to stock up. Would you mind hurrying up a bit? (laugh) Sorry. (laugh) Is there any merits to working in such a small space? Not really? We can work face to face? (laugh) It’s very intimate! That’s about it. I made this poster here! And the menu too! She made it. Funny story—I never had a proper job interview with you, did I? We kinda forgot about that? (laugh) When do you feel the most fulfilled in your work? Definitely when the customers are happy, and say things like “your food made my day”. We have subscription customers, who come here every day. And they rush here, and get excited that they made it in time. It’s great to hear something like that directly from the customer. I’m not working at the counter but here in the back. Customer will tell us “My health check results have improved”. Nowadays people are way more health aware. It makes me happy when the customers are happy. There’s potage in it. Thank you for calling Vege & Me! Two chicken, two shrimp, four taco wraps, two Amore, please. Thank you very much! This is called the “Sego-don” salad. It’s inspired by Saigo Takamori, right? We use Kagoshima specialties like roasted sweet potatoes and black pork. We usually also use dried baby sardines, though there not in this one. All of the toppings are from Kagoshima. Alright, go do your best! I’m heading out! We’re heading to the Nangoku building for a pop-up sale! You’re quite in a rush. Yeah, gotta move fast! Everyone’s waiting — I’m off! Sorry for the wait! It’s a bit heavy, sorry. It’s ok until the tomorrow morning! Thank you very much! I’ll get it ready now, so please wait a minute. Sorry for the wait! Here’s your chicken salad! Thank you very much! Thank you very much! Wow, all of your customers have big smiles on their faces. Thanks! That’s what we’re selling! With ambition every day. G’day! This is our Korean-style salad. Using Korean flavors. We let customers swap toppings of the same price for free. Dressings can also be switched, with no extra costs. She’s my kid’s daycare teacher. I finally became a subscription member! I waited for a free subscription spot and finally got in! Sorry for the wait! Thanks! I sticked the receipt inside! Thanks for always dropping by! I ordered a lot, for my friends too. I don’t like cucumber, so I changes it to edamame. Here we have the tacos and… …the Sego-don and…. I got the Korean-style salad. The rest is for my friends. I eat one of these for dinner. If I’d make it myself, it would be hard to prep so many different ingredients. I’d probably end of wasting a lot of ingredients. So it’s really helpful that I can just get a portion-sized salad here. And the staff are all so nice and amazing! It’s a really great shop. I got chicken. Last time, we were torn between two flavors, so we got 2 each. And we ate them at the park — it was so good! So I wanted to take my son here too. I waited for you! Sorry bout that! Thank you! Please enjoy! Thanks! I think I’ve been able to loose weight eating these. It fills me up so much at lunch, so I don’t eat any snacks or the likes. This is the ticket. It’s actually really cheap. I love the shrimp and olive combination so much! Can’t live without this anymore! There’s a lot of people who want to use veggies. What’s it called? The salad life? Our customers are living the salad life! Some of our subscription customers told us, that their cholesterol levels have dropped quite a bit, and others say they don’t catch colds as easily anymore. We offer a subscription plan where you can get one salad per day for ¥12,000 per month. If you want two salads a day, it’s ¥19,000 per month. We thought it would be fun, to have the option to get a salad every day for a subscription price. And we got an overwhelming response from our customers! Now, we have around 90 to 100 subscription members. Having that stable income allows us to try new things and take on new challenges. We’re really grateful to our customers for that. And, you know, I think the beauty of vegetables is that you never get tired of them. Hanging up! Alright, so we’ve got seven salads, three subscription orders, six salad wraps, ten soups, one drink, and three extra vegetable packs. Thank you very much. Delish isn’t it? Wow, this is really good. Seriously, it hits the spot. I’m the store manager. There were some tough times, before the shop actually opened. We couldn’t open the shop, so we sold vegetables in different spots— like pulling a cart around Tenmonkan or borrowing space from other shops. I want to create an environment where our team enjoys working, and customers love coming in. That’s what I try to achieve every day. Everyone’s naturally upbeat and energetic, I never really “designed” the shop’s vibe. Their natural energy just spread and they created this atmosphere together. Everyone’s so kind, it just naturally made the shop into what it is now. Our boss really values our goal of making our customers happy. I want to carry that same spirit forward in everything we do. And value this goal as much as them. Shusaku is a really considerate person, always looking out for the people around them. I really admire his humanity, and that’s why I want to follow him. I started working here, because I’ve always loved creative things, and I love working on something as a team. At first, I was just running our Instagram, but even before we opened the shop, we got a lot of attention there. And I started to wonder what would happen if I work even harder. I knew this was something worth dedicating myself to. That’s why I do it. Shusaku is a really good person. Even if we mess up, we know he’s got our backs. That makes us want to work even harder and bring even more energy to the shop. He’s a really good person. What part exactly? Let me think about it for a sec. Hhm, I wonder… He’s kind, and… oh no, no they’ll think he’s my boyfriend. I’m the type of person who wants to take action, who wants to do things my own way. And he let’s me do that freely. I want Vege & Me to be known all over Japan. And open stores all over the country! Was that ok? Actually, my son got really sick when he was in elementary school. He was in the hospital for about a year, and during that time, we saw kids who passed away, not being able to fulfill their dreams. Me and my son, we witnessed that together…. And that…. I think about these kid’s dreams a lot. I can’t say that what we do here directly changes lives, but I always keep that experience in my heart. And I think I have been able to connect these feelings with my work and bring joy to people. And I always carry that in my heart. We’ve been really blessed with our team. And I think the things he experienced back then as a child has shaped him. I’m glad he is healthy, and able to give his all. We work with many farmers who grow amazing produce, but I realized their work is widely unknown. I wanted to find a way to bring their vegetables to more people. I started by going directly to the farms, meeting the farmers, and learning about their work firsthand. I wanted to see how the veggies grow from nothing. I went into wilderness with the farmers, and started having talks with them. I wanted to see everything with my own eyes. I’ve always loved doing things for people and making them happy, and I think that’s what led me here. I’ve felt like that since I was a child. I’m not super aware of it, it’s just the way I live every day. We have a team of experts who each bring something different to the table. We all play to our strengths, and that’s what makes Vege & Me work. With lots of enthusiasm! I think customers pick up on that vibe too. When they tell us how much they love the atmosphere and the staff, that’s the best compliment. Even though our shop is so extremely tiny, I believe we can make a big impact on the farmers as well as our customers by spreading happiness through food. We’re aiming for a national expansion—step by step! We’re now heading to visit one of the farmers we work with. But first, we have a quick stop to make. I’ve lost quite some weight now! Thank you very much. A big portion of Ramen please! Thanks for the food. Let’s go meet the farmer. Thanks for your hard work! Sorry for bothering you today. I’ve known him since he was born. He’s always been crazy about vegetables. Sure am. And you’re really working so very hard! Thank you! I’ll keep doing my best We’re doing volunteer work together too, taking the kids living in the area along to the fields. Or doing Christmas events. It’s best if we directly show the fields. Yeah, lets head into the fields. Chinese cabbage, normal cabbage, Daikon radish, broccoli…. We use these in our salads, red cabbage for color too. This has only been growing for a month. So, is there any special method you use to grow this cabbage? Yeah, we use a lot of compost. Without enough compost, you just can’t grow good crops. We use chicken manure, pig manure, and cow manure— that’s what makes them grow so big! See how large these leaves are? That means the fertilizer is really working. This one’s actually grown a bit too much—it’s taken in a lot of nutrients from the soil. Our soil is packed with nutrients, and that’s why the veggies turn out so flavorful. How is this different from regular lettuce? Well, the leaves are more tightly wrapped, and the inner part is soft and fluffy. When the plant gets plenty of nutrients, it keeps growing from the inside and wraps itself up. We also use this broccoli for our salads! That’s delicious for sure! Nakayoshi-san doesn’t use any pesticides. His veggies are organic. Yeah, I’m a organic farmer. That way, it’s healthier for everyone. You want some potatoes? Yeah sure! They taste amazing! Perfect for potato salad! Yeah right! We use these at the shop too! We use them to make the salads more colorful. Radish. Here you go. These are great to add some color. Green Daikon Radish. They are green inside too. Colorful carrots. You can totally enjoy these raw. They are sweet and delicious. What do we have here! Let’s try the carrot. Even the earth tastes delish. Go on and try! It’s really sweet! Oh wow it’s really sweet. They’re really sweet. You can eat it raw too—it’s totally good just as it is. Delicious! You know, with vegetables, the best way to eat them is fresh, right after they’re harvested. We collect them from the farms and sell them the very same day. That’s why we’re super confident in the freshness of our salads. These are delicious too. What do you think about Shusaku? I’d say he’s a really good person. That’s the main thing. And because he’s such a good guy, you can trust him to keep his word. That made me really happy to hear. If you’re doing YouTube… will a lot of people watch this? I think so! This is a great chance. We should make sure that as many people as possible watch this, right? We need to show them something cool. Like, “Whoa, this is the kind of produce they’re using?” Or, “Oh, this is how they grow things on the farm!” If we can capture that on video, it would be great. With YouTube, what’s the key to getting people to watch? It’s all about showing them your passion. My passion for growing vegetables. This way, customers can enjoy the veggies with peace of mind. That’s true. This is something I take real pride in. I start with the seeds, nurture the plants, watch them grow. And I watch them slowly sprouting out of the earth. And watching that growing process over several month, watching their growth, it’s really fun and exciting. And I want the people at the shop to create something delicious with this. Right! That’s where I come in. I produce something and he puts it on display, and sells it. I put my pride into what I am growing here. So I want you to keep that pride when selling them. That’s right. I can provide raw vegetables based on what your customers want. Ah, I understand. Let me know anytime, and I will make it. Thank you very much. Do you have so much energy that you can do that? Yeah! He’s always been really energetic. Yeah, because I love what I do. I always try to stay positive. You could also always take it easy and rest? As someone who has met you for the first time today, I felt you are a very energetic, strong willed person. Well you know…. I just want to make people happy. I want to be useful to people. I have a poster in my bathroom that says. “I am aiming to be a person that is helpful to others”. That’s you in a nutshell. I really wish, I could see the faces of the people who’ll watch this on YouTube. I’d love to see them. That would be great. We could even teach each other about new things, or about new ways to grow vegetables. I’ll keep doing my best. Thank you very much. That’s right, let’s work hard together. Thank you so much for having us! Thank you too! See you! Here have some fruit too! You don’t need anything else? Yeah all good. Here you go! From Sakura-jima. Thank you! See you! I got some energy from him! I always do. Now, we’re visiting the farm where we get our tomatoes. It’s quite a big farm. It’s about the size of 36 swimming pools! Hello? He’s growing the tomatoes for our salads. This is Kagoshima Farm. My dad is the head of the farm, and me and my younger brother are managing the greenhouses. I noticed there are bees flying around—why is that? They actually help pollinate the flowers. The bees collect nectar, which spreads pollen and helps the tomatoes grow. So the bees work together with us. See that over there? That’s their hive. This is their hive. They come out here What does this do? We also use technology to keep track of the environment inside the greenhouse. This screen shows temperature, humidity, and the perfect climate for tomatoes —between 20-25°C. Instead of soil, we use coconut husks because they have great drainage. Too much water can damage the roots, so we need a material that keeps just the right amount of moisture. To create just the right environment for the tomatoes to grow. What are those cameras for? The cameras are for monitoring the plant temperature. So you know the temperature of these tomatoes here right now? We do. I can look it up on my phone. You can see it like this. This is the actual temperature in the greenhouse and the temperature of the plant body. So, we need to know what the actual temperature of the plant is. We can see the temperature of the stem and the leaves of this plant. On the camera. When we bring our tomatoes directly to customers and hear, “These are so good!” it makes all the hard work worth it. That kind of feedback keeps us going. Makes me happy too. It makes me want to work even harder from now on too. Through salads, we hope to bring more smiles to people’s faces. Thank you very much.

They sell 20 grand USD of salad a month from this tiny room at just 7square meters! Just from selling healthy vegetable bento in Kagoshima! This place is great for a quick healthy take out meal, which is surprisingly not that common in Japan!

  7. I would love to subscribe and see their smiles every day too. They all know how to be happy.
