Hello traveler! 🤗✨ Today the wind came with a vengeance! 🌬️😄 And Santander is full of sea breeze. We are in the north! So hold on tight… and let’s discover this coastal gem together!” Before starting this walk through the incredible city of Santander, I invite you to subscribe to the channel if you like traveling from home, leave a like if you love discovering new places, comment which part of the city has surprised you the most… Share this video with someone who loves Spain as much as you! 🌍✈️ Let’s go… Welcome to Santander, a jewel in the north of Spain, capital of Cantabria, bathed by the Cantabrian Sea and full of history, elegance and tradition We begin our walk in one of the most emblematic areas: the Paseo de Pereda, with its stately buildings and views of the sea, which already give us a first impression of what this coastal city is: open, bright and with a lot of character 📍Palacete del Embarcadero Originally, its function was to serve as a passenger and customs station , facilitating maritime transit in the city. unique, with a square plan, a portico towards the sea and angular turrets topped with pinnacles. In front of us opens one of the most impressive landscapes in northern Spain: the Bay of Santander, considered one of the most beautiful in the world. 📍Monument to the Spanish Navy. Boom!💥 Many sailors and travelers have compared this Bay to that of Rio de Janeiro, Hong Kong or San Francisco, but with the Cantabrian flavor that makes it unique. 📍Stone Crane (La Machina). It was installed in 1893 to facilitate the tasks of loading and unloading goods on ships. Here in front of us is the modern Botín Centre, an architectural jewel designed by Renzo Piano, the same man who created the Pompidou Center in Paris. Rescue buoy. 🛟 This contemporary art center seems to float over the bay and represents the balance that Santander seeks between its past and its future. Inaugurated in June 2017, this cultural space seeks to promote the social and economic development of the region through the arts, stimulating the creativity and well-being of the community. Modern and elegant design, with two floating volumes that seem to emerge from the water. It offers a varied program that includes temporary exhibitions of contemporary art, educational activities and cultural events. Goodbye family! ✨❣️ As we go up the word (Yes) sounds. 🎶🚀 ✨🙌🏼✨ The bay is surrounded by green hills, golden beaches and charming small towns such as Pedreña, Somo or El Astillero. And if you’re liking this view, imagine living here and seeing this every day… ✨ If when we went up the elevator it said (Yes), when we go down it will say (No)… 👀 🎶 No, no, no! 🎶 Today, the bay is not only beauty: it is life. There are boat routes that run through it, protected areas of great ecological value such as the Alday marshes, and a lot of migratory birds that choose it as their temporary home. And here we have it! The Port of Santander, a place where ships, goods and cultures cross paths every day. Travel to England by ferry from Santander. Direct ferry to Portsmouth and Plymouth, a route widely used both for the transport of goods and by British tourists. It also has connections with Cork and Rosslare, which reinforces the ties between Cantabria and the Irish island. And after enjoying the Cantabrian Sea, it is time to enter the heart of the city. This city, as you see it today, was reborn from its own ashes. Literally. Because in 1941, Santander was devastated by a terrible fire that changed everything. On the night of February 15, 1941, a strong south wind so typical in the region, fanned a fire on Cádiz Street. A day like today, let’s go! 🤣💨 What seemed like a small fire turned into an uncontrolled inferno: the flames quickly spread across the rooftops, destroying the entire old part of the city. Monument in memory of the Santander fire. Here we honor the thousands of people who lost everything and an entire city that had to start over. This monument symbolizes the south wind and the Santander fire. As a curiosity, in 1988, a south wind that spread the fire, uncovered this sculpture the night before its inauguration, 🌬️ as if it were in a hurry to see its own image carved in stone. 💨 Don’t you think it’s incredible that I’m telling you this and it’s the same or similar wind! 💨😳 Many residents took refuge in the Cathedral, which was also partially damaged. The fire coincided with a difficult time, the Civil War had recently ended and Spain was in the midst of the post-war period. 📍Santander Cathedral. And like in any self-respecting city… a good deed could not be missing! In this way all the old facades are preserved and the building is completely modified. The Cathedral of Santander is made up of two superimposed churches. The crypt or lower church, called Iglesia del Cristo, is from the 13th century and is considered one of the oldest buildings in Santander. 📍Church of Christ. Small, austere, but with an undeniable Gothic charm. ✨ Here, in addition to Roman and medieval remains, you can see what the city was like before the fire. And now we go up from the crypt to the old monastery converted into the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption. Bishop of Santander. This upper part was erected between the 14th and 15th centuries, on what was the Benedictine monastery of San Emeterio. For centuries it was the spiritual center of the city, even before Santander was a diocese (it was from 1754). I couldn’t pass! ⛔️ Here every stone counts something, and every corner keeps a memory of this seafaring, fighting and soulful city. And if we continue a little further, we arrive at the Mercado de la Esperanza, a place that many tourists miss, but that hides flavor, history… and the occasional surprise. So, let’s go there! The population of Santander is around 175,000 inhabitants. It is the most populated city in Cantabria. Cantabria is a single-provincial autonomous community located in the north of Spain. It is bathed by the Cantabrian Sea, bordering to the east with the Basque Country, to the south with Castilla y León, and to the west with Asturias. Fire of 1941. 🔥 Santander Cathedral. This is the Church of the Annunciation or of the Company. Built between 1719 and 1753 and is in the Baroque style. Its construction was promoted by the Jesuits, who arrived in Santander in the 17th century. The Jesuits are especially known for their educational work. They founded universities, colleges and schools around the world, and education is one of the main features of their mission. Throughout history, the Jesuits were subject to conflicts with various religious and political authorities. In the 18th century, for example, they were expelled from several European countries, including Spain, due to their powerful political and educational influences. This occurred in the context of the struggle between Church and State. Despite being expelled from several countries, the Jesuits persevered and continued their work in other places. Today, the Jesuits remain one of the most influential religious orders in the world. Cantabrian ham is so delicious that even tourists come to try it… and stay longer than on the beach. 😄🍖 Subscribe! And if you don’t you run out of ham! 🤗 Cantabria is a place of great beauty, with a mix of mountains, beaches and green valleys, as well as a rich fishing and industrial tradition. 📍Santander City Council. Now we will see the Mercado de la Esperanza in Santander and we will be able to find a wide variety of local products that represent the best of the gastronomy of Cantabria. 📍Market of Hope. The market opened its doors on April 10, 1904. It has an iron and glass structure, representative of the modernism of the time. The apples, very typical in the region, are ideal for making cider. Beans. Typical Spanish ham. 🐷 The famous “Cantabrian Anchovy” is one of the most emblematic products of the region. Cantabrian anchovies are smaller than other varieties of anchovies, which makes them more tender and tastier. Cabrales Cheese: A blue cheese from the Picos de Europa, very popular in Cantabria. Blood sausages and Chorizos: Traditional Cantabrian sausages, ideal to accompany stews. Cow and Sheep Cheese: From the numerous local cheese factories, highly appreciated for its flavor. This is one of the most emblematic spaces in Santander. If you could take only one product from this market home, which one would you choose? Cantabrian cheese, anchovies or something else? In 1977, the market was declared a Historical-Artistic Monument, underlining its cultural and historical relevance. Here we have the outside part of the market. 👀 ✨🍅🍅✨ Cantabrian Tomatoes: They are very tasty and are grown in orchards in the region. In front we have the Church of San Francisco. It has a very elegant Renaissance façade. Now we will see the flower market. 💐 If you were a flower, which one would you be? I would look like a sunflower, because I like the heat! 🌻 Seeds. And with these fresh flowers in the air, we leave the Flower Market and head to the Santander City Hall! 🏛️ And as always, the wind from Santander accompanies us… 💨😅 This square has always been a meeting place for Santander residents. The Santander City Hall is one of the most emblematic buildings in the city. It was officially inaugurated in 1911 and is in a neoclassical style. Cantabria is a single-provincial autonomous community located in the north of Spain. It is bathed by the Cantabrian Sea, bordering to the east with the Basque Country, to the south with Castilla y León, and to the west with Asturias. It is famous for its beautiful coast with beaches such as Sardinero, Laredo and Comillas, as well as its varied mountain range (such as the Picos de Europa) and green valleys. It has more than 200 kilometers of coastline, which makes it a paradise for lovers of the sea, waves and outdoor activities. The Picos de Europa are one of the most impressive natural wonders in Spain. This mountain range is part of the Cantabrian Mountains and is famous for its dramatic landscape, its biodiversity and the majesty of its peaks. 🏔️ The highest mountain reaches 2,648 meters of altitude. Cantabria receives more and more tourists due to its impressive nature, its coast, its small towns full of charm and the offer of adventure sports such as hiking, surfing, climbing and canoeing. Cantabria is a land of history, nature, sea and traditions. Now we are arriving at Plaza Porticada, which is one of the most emblematic and busiest places in Santander. 📍Statue of Pedro Velarde. Pedro Velarde was a prominent Spanish military man originally from Cantabria. He is recognized mainly for his brave participation against the French occupation in Madrid. 📍Plaza Porticada. Its architecture is characterized by the porticoes that surround the square, which gives it an elegant and classic air. In the past, this was the center of Santander’s commercial life. Merchants used to display their products, and it was a very lively place where transactions of all kinds took place. Here, in the heart of Santander, hidden under our noses, there is an air raid shelter that seems straight out of a spy movie from the 40s. 👀 It is one of those gems of history that, although not everyone knows, has a great deal of mystery and a fascinating story behind it. 🚨 📍Air raid shelter. It was built in 1937 to house about 70 people. During the Civil War, 114 shelters were built throughout the city. Currently this is the only one that can be visited. And learn in more detail how the people of Santander lived in those times. 📍Eastern Market. This is one of those places where the past and the present go hand in hand… and on top of that they sell you anchovies! 🐟😄 Built between 1839 and 1842, making it one of the first closed markets in Spain. At that time it was completely modern, like a shopping center but without Zara. 😅 Nowadays, it no longer functions as a traditional food market, but that doesn’t mean it has lost its charm. 📍Santander Bank Building. A very popular bank in Spain. Did you know that Santander became the summer residence of Spanish royalty? 👑 During the reign of Alfonso 📍Pombo Musical Temple. Here comes the best: the Santander City Council, with the support of the citizens, decided to give the kings a palace. So, without detours. It was built between 1908 and 1912, on the Magdalena peninsula, and became the official summer residence of Alfonso XIII and his family. The project was financed with a “popular subscription”, which means that many citizens gave out of their own pockets so that the king could have his house on the beach. Can you imagine today saying to your neighborhood: “hey, let’s build a chalet for the head of state”? 😂 With the kings installed in the city, Santander became a hive of culture and high society. The royal family enjoyed the Cantabrian Sea on their royal yachts, such as the Giralda, and participated in regattas, walks, sea baths and exclusive parties. Their presence turned Santander into a focus of cultural, social and political life in the middle of summer. The best of the society of the time came. There are even penguins on the peninsula! 🐧 And do you know why they are there? These tulips look like me when I’m recording! 🤣 It’s hard to stand up! 💨 Well, the penguins were a gift from Juan Perón himself and Eva Duarte (Evita) from Argentina, in the 50s. So yes, there are diplomatic penguins in Santander 🐧🎩 🎩👑 “While the kings were having tea looking at the bay… a few meters away, the Raqueros jumped into the water for a few coins. Two worlds, the same breeze. The Raqueros They were poor children and young people, mostly orphans or marginalized, who hung around these docks in Santander. Their life was not easy, but they had a peculiar job… 👀 Their job was to jump into the water in exchange for some coins that curious people, tourists or even boat crews, would throw into the sea to watch them dive like Cantabrian dolphins 📍Come on, live local entertainment. direct! 🎯 Of course, if they didn’t get the coin… there was no snack. They are like the memory of a very hard reality, but also a way to pay tribute to these kids who survived with mischief, bravery… and a lot of resistance to the cold ! José’s face! 🤔 Very nice! ✨ 🤔 And you, tell me the truth… Would you jump into the water for a 2 euro coin? Or do you need it to be 50? 😄💸 Not me, not for 2 euros! But for 20/30 euros I can already see myself calmly in the water! 💦😂🤣 📍Puerto Chico Santander. And if you are enjoying this walk through the living history of Santander, like, subscribe, share this video with whoever needs a smile and comment on which story has surprised you the most so far. We continue! 🧭💙 This is the Spanish flag. 🇪🇸 And today is the perfect day for the flag to fly! 🌬️ The red color in the flag of Spain represents courage and strength, while yellow is a reference to generosity and wealth. Formerly this was the main port of the city. This is a marine-shaped trash can. ✨ The shield of Spain on the flag has a lot of history. Each part of the shield represents different kingdoms that unified Spain, such as Castile, León, Aragon, Navarra, and Granada. And lest we forget, there is the royal crown on top of the shield! 👑 All this symbolizes the unity of Spain. ❤️💛❤️ Before the largest and most modern ports existed, Puerto Chico was the port heart of the city. From here fishermen went out to the Cantabrian Sea to earn a living, and seafood products entered through here and later arrived at the Mercado de la Esperanza. Today it is a marina as we can see. 🎣 Would you like to live in a place like this, where when you open the window you can smell the sea and see boats every morning? Or better yet… would you be able to live on a boat moored in Puerto Chico? 🚤 🌊 The Cantabrian Sea is the restless soul of northern Spain. It bathes the coasts of Cantabria, the Basque Country, Asturias and Galicia with character and lots and lots of personality. This is the Festival Palace of Cantabria and is one of the temples of culture in Santander. Its architecture is modern, peculiar and… well, let’s say that it leaves no one indifferent: either you fall in love or you are left thinking “but what is this?” 😄 📍Cantabria Festival Palace. The Santander International Festival is also celebrated here, one of the most important in the country. Are you more into opera, theater, or the type who only comes in if there is a rock concert? 😄 And what do you think of the design? Is it a masterpiece or is it a giant Lego piece? Here on the left we have the Naves de Gamazo, which is an outstanding center of contemporary art. The space has been designed to adapt to various exhibitions and cultural projects. 🌊 The Cantabrian Sea is brave, capricious, unpredictable… and beautiful. ✨ It is famous for its giant waves that delight surfers (and the terror of some bathers 😅), for its cool water that wakes up even the sleepiest, and for its spectacular landscapes where the green of the meadows merges with the deep blue of the sea. Furthermore, this sea has been a source of life and sustenance for centuries: treasures such as Cantabrian anchovies, northern tuna or the tastiest seafood you can taste come from it. Are you more of a brave dip or watching from a towel with a blanket? 😄 📍Boat Ramp (Gamazo). The bay of Santander, considered one of the most beautiful in the world, is not only a visual spectacle, it is also a paradise for sea lovers. Its orientation and clean waters mean that water sports are practiced here almost all year round. Santander is the headquarters of the Príncipe Felipe Specialized High Performance Sailing Center, where some of the best sailors in Spain train! ⛵️ In fact, it has hosted international championships. You can rent a sailboat or even sign up for classes at the city’s nautical schools. Over here on the right we have the Cantabrian Maritime Museum. It is a leading cultural institution in Santander, dedicated to the dissemination of the maritime heritage and marine biodiversity of the region. We are going towards Playa de los Peligros, and the wind accompanies us, you will see authentic wind acrobats on the waves. We will see Windsurfing and kitesurfing. 🏄🏻♂️ I have to admit that it is incredible how these people manage to practice these sports! 😯 Would you dare to try a water sport or are you more into watching from the sand with a beer in hand? 😜 Although modern kitesurfing was developed in the late 90s, its origins date back to the early 20th century with the use of kites for traction. How small we are and how immense the sea looks! 🌊 Let’s go down to see better. 👀 And so we come to the end of this incredible walk through Santander! From the emblematic monuments to this wonderful Playa de los Peligros, where kitesurfers and windsurfers challenge the waves and wind, there will be no shortage of action on this tour! And I won’t forget these brave people who jump into the sea with their boards and kites, showing us the true adventurous spirit of Santander! It’s incredible how windy it is! 😅 If you liked this video, don’t forget to like, comment and subscribe so you don’t miss our future adventures. Great video, and what a stunning city it is!
