Thailand’s Friendliest People Live Here 🇹🇭 (Street Food Paradise)

This week @theroamingcook and I hit the road with a rental car and an empty stomach, ready to explore the cultural and culinary gems of southern Thailand.

Our journey begins in Hat Yai, a city full of local energy, where we waste no time diving into one of the most iconic food spots in the south — Kai-Tod Decha. The deep-fried chicken here is legendary, perfectly crispy with a southern spice kick that instantly sets the tone for the day. From there, we head up to the Hat Yai City Viewpoint, where the Golden Buddha watches over the city and you get a stunning panoramic look at this often-overlooked part of Thailand.

Cruising further south, we stop at the majestic Grand Mosque of Songkhla, an unexpected sight that feels like it belongs in the Middle East, not Southeast Asia. Its reflection in the long rectangular pool out front makes for a surreal scene. Then, to cool off from the heat, we swing by for ice cream in a jar — a quirky little dessert shop serving Thai-style scoops in recycled glass jars, topped with everything from sweet corn to jelly. It’s one of those hyper-local, only-in-Thailand experiences. Next stop: the local beach, where salty air, quiet shores, and a lack of tourists make it feel like a secret escape.

In the morning, we’re up early in Songkhla Old Town, a sleepy district packed with Sino-Portuguese charm, street art, and friendly uncles frying up some of the best roti and curry breakfasts we’ve ever had. We end the adventure at Ko Yo, an island just across the bridge known for traditional weaving, slow village life, and scenic lake views. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on a trip that surprised us at every turn — a mix of incredible food, serene viewpoints, and hidden corners of southern Thailand that deserve way more love.

  1. as a malaysian, i would say the breakfast is not that authentic malaysian style breakfast, BUT greatly influenced with thai. however it is good though.

  2. thanks to you and Gary I decided to visit Hat Yai when I was last in Thailand and I can't say enough great things about that area of Thailand, I highly recommend it be added to everyones list

  3. I’m from Hatyai, firstly found your channel many years ago while you’re in Hatyai walk around the city eating corn and complain about traffic light here. 5555555555 very glad that you love Songkhla and come back again.

  4. Great buddy videos! This is an excellent format! I love that you include the mistakes and foibles. Flying into Nan Nakhon would be cool!

  5. Hey Paddy, fan-tastic video, you got me with your recommandation 😍😀 I deff. want to visit Hat Yai one day, my Sis. and her partner have been there before. Nice collab. with Mr. super foody Gary ! 👍Thanks, Top notch and funny content✌❤

  6. Could you do a video in Phayao? Absolutely loved it there back in April and we went to your "So Good" restaurant that you went to Paddy during your province journey!!! Thank you for recommending going to Phayao!

  7. Without watching (aside from the thumbnail), I wonder how one can definitively say that people wherever you went are somehow, universally, more friendly than elsewhere in Thailand? I have found friendly people all over Thailand, much moreso than in my home country. i would never think to insinuate (even living in Phuket) that people in a certain area are automatically less friendly than other people in Thailand
