With a perfect balance of historical monuments, breathtaking views and suggestive corners, Riva del Garda offers an unforgettable experience for every type of visitor. In this guide, I will accompany you to discover its treasures through a carefully studied itinerary, starting from the convenient parking lot up to the most spectacular panoramic points. The route is designed to optimize time and resources, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of this pearl of Lake Garda. Our journey begins with a convenient parking lot in Via Monte Oro, a strategic solution that will allow you to reach all the points of interest on our itinerary on foot . From here we will head towards the historic center, the first point of our route. Our itinerary begins in the charming historic center of Riva del Garda, a maze of cobbled streets , medieval porticoes and historic buildings that tell centuries of history. Walking through these alleys, we will breathe the authentic atmosphere of this lakeside town, where time seems to have stopped. The center features pastel-colored buildings typically Mediterranean that blend harmoniously with the Austro-Hungarian architecture, testimony to Riva’s frontier history. We soon reach Piazza III Novembre, the true beating heart of the city. This elegant square overlooks the harbor and is the favorite meeting point for locals. Surrounded by historic cafes and buildings with colorful facades, the square offers a splendid view of the lake and the surrounding mountains. Here you can watch the boats coming and going in the small harbor and admire the Palazzo Pretorio with its decorated facade. The imposing Torre Apponale, the undisputed symbol of Riva del Garda, dominates Piazza III Novembre. This 34-meter-high medieval tower from the 13th century once served as a lighthouse and observation point. It is definitely worth climbing its 165 steps to reach the top, where a spectacular 360° panoramic view of the lake, the surrounding mountains and the roofs of the old town awaits you. On particularly clear days, your gaze can reach as far as the Sirmione peninsula to the south. The tower, restored several times over the centuries, retains its medieval appearance and is one of the main photographic points of your visit. Continuing our itinerary, we reach the majestic Rocca di Riva, a medieval castle surrounded by the waters of the lake that is another symbol of the city. Built in the 12th century at the behest of the Prince Bishop of Trento and subsequently expanded under Venetian and Habsburg rule, the Rocca today houses the Alto Garda Museum. The museum is divided into various sections that offer a fascinating journey through local history and art. The art gallery houses a rich collection of paintings from the 15th to the 19th century, with works by local and international artists who have portrayed the landscapes of Garda. Particularly interesting is the archaeological section, which documents the habitation of the area since prehistoric times, with finds from the Bronze Age, Roman and medieval periods. There is no shortage of temporary exhibitions of contemporary art that dialogue with the thousand-year history of the building. The gardens surrounding the Rocca offer a pleasant green space where you can rest while admiring the lake. Not far from the center, we find the Church of Santa Maria Inviolata, a splendid example of 17th-century Baroque architecture. Built between 1603 and 1636 at the behest of the Confraternita dei Disciplini, the church has an octagonal plan surmounted by an imposing dome. The interior is a riot of Baroque decorations: stucco, polychrome marble and frescoes cover every available surface. The cycle of frescoes, created by artists of the Veronese school, narrates episodes from the life of the Virgin Mary and represents one of the most significant examples of Baroque painting in Alto Garda. The altar deserves particular attention. altarpieces. The church, perfectly preserved, offers a moment of peace and contemplation on your itinerary. After so much history and art, it is time to enjoy a relaxing walk along the Riva lakeside, one of the most beautiful and well-kept of all of Lake Garda. This elegant tree-lined avenue extends for several kilometers, offering suggestive views of the lake and the mountains that surround it. The palm trees and oleanders that line it create an almost Mediterranean atmosphere, while the strategically placed benches invite you to stop and admire the view. Along the way you will find cafes and ice cream shops where you can take a refreshing break, art galleries and boutiques for a bit of shopping. The lakeside is lively in every season: in summer with swimmers and sailors, in spring and autumn with photographers and painters who try to capture the beauty of the landscape, and even in winter, when the breeze of Garda creates a magical atmosphere. Continuing along the lakeside in an easterly direction, we reach the famous Spiaggia dei Sabbioni, one of the most loved and frequented in Riva del Garda. This wide expanse of fine sand and gravel offers gradual access to the crystalline waters of the lake, making it ideal for families with children. The beach is perfectly equipped with services, sun lounger and umbrella rental, kiosks for cooling off and even areas for water sports such as windsurfing and sailing, sports that in Riva find ideal conditions thanks to the constant winds. From here you can admire the profile of the mountains that plunge into the lake, creating that contrast between the Alpine and Mediterranean environment that makes the Garda landscape unique. If you have time, a dip in the blue waters of the lake will represent a regenerating moment in your itinerary. Resuming our journey towards the hinterland, it is time to climb to the Bastione, an imposing Venetian fortification from the 16th century that dominates Riva del Garda from a hill 160 meters above lake level. You can reach it via a panoramic path that starts from the historic center, a pleasant walk of about 20 minutes among olive trees and Mediterranean vegetation, or using the modern panoramic elevator that will take you to the top in a few minutes. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view that extends across the entire lake to the surrounding mountains. The Bastion, built by the Republic of Venice in 1508 as a defensive outpost, is today one of the most spectacular panoramic points in the entire Garda area. The structure has retained its military charm, with the mighty walls in local limestone and the characteristic circular shape. Continuing our itinerary, the historic Riva del Garda Hydroelectric Power Plant is worth a visit, an impressive example of industrial architecture from the early twentieth century. Designed by the architect Giancarlo Maroni, the plant was inaugurated in 1925 and is still in operation today. The building immediately strikes you with its monumental appearance that recalls a neoclassical temple, with its imposing façade in light limestone and large arched windows. Inside, the engine room preserves part of the original machinery that tells the story of the industrialization and electrification of the area. The enormous turbines and generators represent a fascinating heritage of industrial archaeology. For lovers of trekking and nature, an unmissable detour is represented by Monte Brione, an elongated hill that separates Riva del Garda from nearby Torbole. This promontory, which rises up to 376 meters above sea level, represents an incredible naturalistic oasis with a Mediterranean flora unique for these latitudes, so much so that it is classified as a protected biotope. The path that leads to the summit is well signposted and of medium difficulty, which can be covered in about an hour and a half. Along the way you will encounter numerous bunkers and fortifications dating back to the First World War, when Monte Brione represented an important defensive outpost of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. These ruins, perfectly integrated into the landscape, offer a fascinating glimpse into military history. Once you reach the top, the view will repay all your efforts: from here you can enjoy a privileged view that embraces both northern shores of the lake, with Riva and Torbole at your feet and, on clear days, even a hint of the Po Valley in the distance. We continue our itinerary with what is considered one of the most beautiful trails in Italy: the legendary Sentiero del Ponale. This ancient road, dug into the rock in the mid-19th century to connect Riva del Garda to the Ledro Valley, is today a paradise for hikers and cyclists. The starting point is located about 1 km from the center of Riva, near the hydroelectric plant. The trail gently climbs along the rock face, offering glimpses of incomparable beauty over the lake. The tunnels dug into the rock, the suspension bridges and the original stone parapets bear witness to the incredible engineering feat that was created in the 19th century. The Mediterranean vegetation, with agaves, capers and olive trees growing among the rocks, creates a surprising contrast with the limestone walls. Just 5 kilometers from Riva del Garda, the medieval village of Arco offers the opportunity for a pleasant excursion that perfectly completes our itinerary. Dominated by the imposing Castle that stands on a rocky spur, Arco is an unmissable stop for lovers of history and breathtaking views. The Arco Castle, whose origins date back to the 11th century, was for centuries the residence of the Counts of Arco and a strategic point for controlling the valley. Reachable via a panoramic path that winds through centuries-old olive groves, the fortress offers a spectacular view of the lake and the surrounding mountains. Its interiors host late-medieval frescoes of extraordinary beauty, including the famous cycle of “Games and Courtly Loves”, a rare example of profane painting from the 14th century.
