Burgos, España WALKING TOUR |😳❌ ¡Esto es LO QUE TE PIERDES si no caminas por Burgos!
Hello all dear friends! Welcome to Burgos, a historic city in northern Spain, in the autonomous community of Castilla y León. We start our walk from the Bessón bridge that helps us cross the Alarzón river. This majestic building is the Palace of Justice of Burgos. It was designed to centralize the different courts that were previously dispersed in various parts of Burgos. Friends, these trees look beautiful to me, they give an incredible charm to this walk! 😍 Both sides are unified at the top, forming a kind of natural tunnel. It seems like the trees want to touch each other and be together! 💚 In case you’re wondering, they are shade bananas (Platanus hispanica), a very common species on urban walks and boulevards in Spain. 🌳 In spring and summer, its leafy foliage gives a fresh and welcoming atmosphere to this walk along the Arlanzón River. By the way! As it passes through Burgos, this river divides the city in two and is the protagonist of many of its urban landscapes.😍 This is the famous Santa Maria bridge! Although its current structure is more modern, the bridge has medieval origins and has witnessed the passage of kings, pilgrims, merchants and travelers for centuries. This bridge takes us to the majestic Puerta de Santa María, a stone arch with towers and sculptures, which was the old entrance to the medieval wall. 😍 On its façade there are statues of important figures such as the Cid Campeador, Count Fernán González and Carlos V himself. This statue of the lady selling chestnuts is a tribute to the old traditional and humble trades of Burgos. A symbol of nostalgia and custom🌰🔥💖 When you cross this door, you find one of the most beautiful views of the Burgos Cathedral! Prepared? The Cathedral of Burgos is one of the jewels of Gothic art in Spain and the world. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984, it is the most emblematic monument of the city and a key point on the Camino de Santiago. Its construction lasted more than 300 years, with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. It is inspired by French cathedrals, such as Reims. General admission costs €10 per person, but you can access this ticket for free. The most notable thing is that in the center of the cathedral rest the remains of the legendary knight Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, the Cid Campeador, along with his wife Doña Jimena. Soon I will tell you about who El Cid Campeador was, a Spanish knight who became a legend. There are also other tombs of nobles, bishops and important figures in the history of Castile and the church itself. This is a place of great symbolism for the history of Spain. This square is a meeting point between tourists and locals and its atmosphere reflects the grandeur of the cathedral and the history of the city. If you come in summer, you will see it full of people and shining in all its splendor!🌞😎🍺 In recent years, the square has been pedestrianized, allowing visitors to enjoy the landscape, without the bustle of vehicles. The cathedral has an impressive size: 84 meters high in its towers, making it one of the tallest cathedrals in Spain! The cathedral has two towers that can be seen from almost anywhere in Burgos. 👀 This is the Fountain of Santa María, with the Virgin Mary as the central figure since it has a strong link with the cathedral and the city of Burgos. Did you know that originally these tourist and decorative fountains served to supply water to the population? 😮 Now I would like to show you a special perspective… 💖 Have you noticed that we tend to focus only on the most touristy part of monuments, such as their main façade, without seeing them completely? Walking around the cathedral is one of the best ways to fully appreciate its grandeur. The different perspectives allow you to see how the cathedral is integrated into the surroundings of Burgos: how it relates to the nearby streets, squares and buildings. 📍 Church of San Nicolás de Bari. Inside lie the tombs of the bourgeois Polanco family, who selflessly financed the church, elevating it to a Gothic jewel. 💎 Don’t think that Burgos is just a pretty face!👸 Burgos has been a key region in the history of Spain! The history of Burgos begins in the year 884, when Count Diego Rodríguez Porcelos founded it by order of King Alfonso III of Asturias. Its objective was to reinforce the Christian border against the Muslims during the Reconquista. 📍 Mural Mimesis, beings and places. Located in a strategic point, the city grew rapidly and, in the 10th century, it became the capital of the County of Castile, key to Christian expansion in the Iberian Peninsula. In the 11th century, Burgos established itself as one of the most important cities in the kingdom of Spain. It was during this time that the figure of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, the Cid Campeador, emerged. El Cid was born around the year 1043 in Vivar del Cid, a town near Burgos. From a young age he trained as a knight and entered the service of King Sancho II of Castile, who made him his main warrior and strategist. His nickname Cid comes from the Arabic sidi (lord), and Campeador means great fighter in Latin. After the death of Sancho II, his brother Alfonso VI inherited the throne. El Cid fell into disgrace at court and was banished in 1081. Unable to serve Castile, he became a mercenary leader and fought for both Christians and Muslims. 📍 This statue represents the pilgrims of the Camino de Santiago, which I will tell you about shortly! 😉 But now, let’s continue with the story of El Cid! ✨ His exile marked the beginning of his legend, since with his own army he conquered numerous cities and earned the admiration of friends and enemies. In 1094, after years of campaigns, El Cid achieved his greatest victory: the conquest of Valencia. He became its independent ruler and established a Christian kingdom there in the middle of Muslim territory. He ruled until his death in 1099, and his wife Doña Jimena maintained control of the city until 1102, when it was taken by the Almoravids. El Cid became a legend thanks to the “Cantar de Mio Cid”, one of the first great works of literature in Spanish. Although the poem idealizes his figure, his story is real: he was a formidable knight, with great military intelligence and capable of forging his own destiny in times of war. And as I told you before, his remains and those of his wife rest in the center of the Burgos Cathedral! By the way, we are walking along the iconic Paseo del Espolón. 🌳🚶♂️ This beautiful place offers a green and quiet space in the heart of the city.💚 This is the Music Temple, where concerts and outdoor events are often held.🎵👂 And this building is the Main Theater Library. It is a key place for the preservation of cultural memory and the study of theater in Burgos. 🎭 Do you hear the birds singing? 🐦 Its ability to relax us, reduce stress and connect us with nature offers us peace and well-being. And birds only sing when there are no predators nearby and therefore, their song gives us a feeling of security! 🥰 How lucky to be able to enjoy this sound in the middle of the city! 💖 Now we will enter the heart of the city! 😸 Continuing with its history, starting in the 13th century, Burgos enters one of its most glorious eras. In 1221, King Ferdinand III the Saint ordered the construction of the Burgos Cathedral. During the 14th and 15th centuries, the city became a center of international trade, especially in the export of wool to Flanders. In the 15th century, under the Catholic Monarchs, Burgos remained a key commercial center, but in 1492, the city witnessed the expulsion of the Jews, which affected its economy. Furthermore, with the arrival of America, trade moved to other cities such as Seville, which caused Burgos to lose part of its prominence. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Burgos experienced a period of decline, because during the War of Independence, it was occupied by Napoleon’s troops and suffered extensive damage. However, in the mid-19th century, the arrival of the railway helped to reactivate its economy and restore part of its importance. In the 20th century, Burgos played a fundamental role in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), since it was the capital of the Franco side during the conflict. Today, Burgos is an essential stop on the French Camino de Santiago, the most important pilgrimage route in Europe. Now you will see a statue of someone you now know… 👀😏 Here we have Cid el Campeador presiding over the San Pablo Bridge! It says: The Champion, always carrying victory with him, was, because of his never-failing clairvoyance, because of the prudent firmness of his character and because of his heroic bravery, a miracle of the great miracles of the creator. As I told you, the Cid presides over the San Pablo Bridge, where there are several statues related to the Cid himself. Here is the Cid’s wife, Doña Gimena. San Sisebuto was abbot of the monastery where Doña Jimena and the children of El Cid Campeador took refuge when El Cid went into exile, and where the remains of El Cid and Doña Jimena rested before being transferred to the Cathedral of Burgos. There is a rumor that El Cid won a battle after he died!😮 When he died in Valencia in 1099, his followers, so as not to demoralize his troops, tied his corpse to his horse Babieca, and placed the sword in his hand. Thus, his army saw him lead the battle, achieving victory. As a curiosity, it is said that El Cid chose Babieca among the weakest horses, but over time he became a legendary horse in battle.💪🐴 With love you can go much further in life!💞 El Cantar de Mio Cid is the first great epic poem in Spanish literature and one of the most important works of the Middle Ages. It is a song of deeds, that is, a story in verse that narrates the exploits of the Cid. It tells the entire story of El Cid Campeador, from when he is banished by King Alfonso VI until he regains his honor, conquers Valencia and marries his daughters to royal nobles. And it reflects the values of the time: honor, loyalty and bravery. ✨😍✨ Friends, now we know an important part of the history of Burgos, but there is something very important that we have not yet mentioned… Burgos has a very important connection with the Camino de Santiago! The Camino de Santiago is an ancient pilgrimage route that leads to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia, Spain, where the remains of the Apostle Santiago rest. ✝ 📍 This is La Casa del Cordón, a historic palace in Burgos. The Catholic Monarchs stayed here, and in 1497, they received Christopher Columbus in this palace after his second voyage to America. Today, the building is home to cultural and banking activities, but remains a key monument in Burgos. Look! These are pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago! Now we will enter La Casa del Cordón, it is a luxury to have a bank like this! 😮💲💸💰 Incredible! 🤩 Christopher Columbus was here and today we come to withdraw money from the ATM! 🤯😱 As I told you, the Camino de Santiago originated in the Middle Ages and was one of the most important Christian pilgrimages in Europe. There are several routes to complete the path, but the most popular is the French Way. Burgos is one of the main cities of the French Way, which crosses all of Spain from the Pyrenees. Along the way, pilgrims pass through historic towns, churches, cathedrals and stunning landscapes. The path is marked everywhere through a shell like this: 👀 The strategic location of Burgos made it a place of rest, supply and prayer for medieval and current pilgrims. Many pilgrims make a special stop here to admire the beauty of the Cathedral and to visit the tomb of Cid Campeador. Since the Middle Ages, Burgos has had hospitals and refuges for pilgrims, such as the Hospital del Rey, founded by Alfonso VIII in the 12th century. 📍The statues of Tetín and Danzante are symbols of the traditions and popular festivals of Burgos, reflecting its cultural identity. Today, there are still hostels like this for pilgrims, keeping the hospitality tradition alive. Burgos is full of symbols of the Camino, such as the scallop shell on streets and buildings.🤩 This statue pays tribute to the blacksmiths who were fundamental in the economy and daily life of this city for centuries. 📍 Now we are going to go inside and see the Church of San Lorenzo el Real! This church was built in the 17th century on an old medieval church. Its impressive dome is one of the most beautiful in Burgos, with paintings and relief details. Its golden main altarpiece stands out, of great artistic wealth! This church was used as a military hospital during the War of Independence against the French. Friends, let’s leave the church to talk about the next topic! Located about 15 km from Burgos, we find Atapuerca, which is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world!🌍 It is a key place to understand human evolution, since the oldest fossil remains in Europe have been found here. In the Sima del Elefante, remains dating back 1.2 million years were found, the oldest in Europe. 💀 That place contains more than 6,000 human bones of at least 28 individuals, 430,000 years old. It is believed to be the first cemetery in history, where early Neanderthals performed funeral rituals. Evidence of cannibalism was found in the remains of Homo antecessor, suggesting that they fed on other humans, possibly for survival. 🍖 Atapuerca was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. Atapuerca continues to be excavated every year by scientists from around the world. It is an authentic trip to the past in the heart of Burgos! 🔬✨ Did you know that Spanish was born here? 📜 In the Monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla, the first words written in Spanish were found, but it was in Burgos where the language expanded and became the language of the kingdom. 💬 Friends, I don’t want the walk to end without telling you about the delicacies you can eat in Burgos!😋 The Morcilla de Burgos is the jewel of its gastronomy! It is made with rice, pork blood, onion and spices and can be eaten fried, grilled or in stews. Burgos cheese is also very well known, which is fresh, white and soft, made with sheep or cow’s milk and can be eaten alone, with honey, quince or in salads. I have to admit that the walk was short, I enjoyed it quite a bit. And you? If you liked it, share it with someone who loves the story as much as you do! 💖 Don’t forget to give this tired pilgrim a like! 😉 Thanks for watching until the end.💖🤗 See you in the next video. See you soon! 👋😊 🌰🌳🍺👸🐴💸🍖🧀💖
