【離島ひとり旅】伊江島をじっくり味わう3泊4日!原付と路線バスでのんびり廻り、青とりどりの風景に癒された!

Enjoy the relaxed island Solo trip to a remote island Ie Island, Okinawa Today I visit Ie Island, Okinawa You can see it from Churaumi Aquarium The island with the pointy mountain About 22 km around Population: just over 4,000 Among Okinawa’s inhabited islands, 10th largest, 6th in population This is my 41st inhabited island in Okinawa, It feels really big to me Alright, let’s land Wonder what the island is like. Excited 😊 From the port I head to my lodging I’ll stay 3 nights at Minshuku Uema The closest inn to the port The only minshuku here that serves meals The hostess was very kind I could see the sea from my window Let’s walk around Google Maps called this a “hidden beach,” but it didn’t feel hidden 😅 It was sunny when I arrived, but clouds slowly spread If you want to see Ie Island at full power, skip ahead to day 3 I wonder what this lookout is for? Ara Beach When I was new to Okinawa, clouds made me sad, but now I like cloudy days too because the sun doesn’t burn me, so relaxing on the beach feels good Though today was a bit chilly 😅 The splashing sound is a little loud 😅 I had a PET bottle on my belt Handy for water breaks It doesn’t feel like a tiny island With 4,000 people, the infrastructure is solid What! There’s a FamilyMart here! Let’s check the supermarket Such a wide selection for a remote island! Life here seems easy And just a few minutes away there’s another FamilyMart! Even a discount liquor store 😱 The bus runs 6 times a day Let’s see the port too Tour buses line up in a row Plus two large ferries A mysterious round building Looks like you can climb it Later I asked a local “I’m not sure what that is,” they said Even locals don’t know 😅 Found a shortcut from the port to my inn Others ate out, so I dined alone 😔 Wow—pork offal soup! Time to eat 😊 It was delicious 😊 Day 2 – Mon, Apr 28, 2025 Rain is forecast today Looks like it might really rain First, breakfast I was the only guest again 😭 The owner is in the hospital, so they cut back on guests The forecast was right, it rained 😭 On rainy island days I usually swim, but today is too cold for that What do you do on a rainy island day? The info center is nearby, let’s go They told me a shuttle bus hack for sightseeing 😊 This season there’s a shuttle to the Lily Festival So I rode it to the venue Even in this weather the bus was almost full Many visitors come just for the lily festival I didn’t feel like walking in the rain, so I stayed on and returned I was the only one who didn’t get off 😅 Back at the port Next, I’ll try the local bus round‑trip More than an hour to wait, so I’ll look at the exhibits Okinawa Battle on Ie Island: Objects & Photos Ie Island was one of the fierce battlefields because it had what was then Asia’s biggest Imperial Japanese Army airfield This photo really struck me To the local and peace museums I looked around until the next bus Never guessing the tragedy to come… With 3 minutes left I went to the bus stop Bus leaves here at 13:35 and returns at 14:15 So, 40 minutes 250 yen each way, so 500 round Alright, with this map, Ie Port is here Zoom all the way up to here, so it goes this far? Wait, hold on Because this run starts at the depot, where is that? ‘In front of Ie Depot’ Surprise! On this run, the stop after Ie Port is the start point Everyone, watch out for this So it’s here There’s a bus at 15:35 Ah, missed it Missed the bus—2‑hour wait At least I got reading time 😊 I wanted to visit a cafe, but none, so I ate at the inn’s diner 😅 No one else here Leaf tobacco Ie beef, a wagyu brand and also hothouse chrysanthemums Chrysanthemums These three crops bring over 1 billion yen in sales No one boarded during the round trip Elderly residents get taxi coupons from the village, so they take taxis instead Why use lights? If you don’t turn on lights, and grow them in the dark, chrysanthemums stay this short At 5–10 cm tall they already form buds To compare with people, a chrysanthemum bud is like a small child getting pregnant Like an elementary or junior‑high student becoming pregnant By using lights, we keep them growing to this height and stop the buds Lights keep them from ‘getting pregnant’ I see, so that’s why I understand now Thank you very much! Oh, I forgot to pay I learned a lot That was super interesting Thank you again! The weather looks good tomorrow, maybe I’ll rent a scooter How much is it? 6,000 yen? That’s pricey! 6,000 yen is the new rate from tomorrow, today it’s only 3,500 😮‍💨 I still had fun despite the rain I’ll sleep early for tomorrow Woke up around 3 a.m. I could faintly see the Milky Way Day 3 – Tue, Apr 29, 2025 Looks like great weather today 😊 5:28 a.m.—let’s go! Heading to Gusuku‑yama for sunrise It’s chilly, so I’ll buy a hot drink Do you have any hot drinks? Sorry, none Oh, really? Only canned coffee Ah, I see What to do… A non‑sealed cup would spill, so I gave up on a hot drink 😅 Island symbol: Mt. Gusuku Called Ie Island’s ‘Tatchu’, 172 m high This tatchu is 70 million years older than the island Normally upper layers are newer, but this peak is old even though it’s on top Old bedrock was scraped off by plate motion and sat on newer rock to form this peak This is called an ‘off‑scrape’ phenomenon They say this is the only place on Earth you can see it 😳 Started the timer Let’s climb! It’s dim, but I can just see Maybe because I’m the first climber today, I walked into many spider webs 😱 There are 291 steps Each step feels quite tall I’m so out of breath— a reminder of my lack of exercise 😅 Ah—made it! 4 minutes Actually 4 min 40 sec So tired Enjoy sunrise from the peak I stayed about an hour and got cold 😅 I really wanted a hot drink A windbreaker would have helped Going down isn’t hard, but a slip could be bad Watch your feet on the way down Riding the scooter wherever I like It’s chilly but the air feels so fresh I see something—let’s stop Hōkon‑no‑Tō, a tower for war victims The tragic photos from yesterday appear in my mind I feel the weight of this island’s fierce battles A total of 3,500 civilians and soldiers died Each name engraved here quietly protests the state that took their lives and continues to speak Nearby remain other war scars This was a public pawnshop US shell marks are still vivid One third of Ie Island is now a US base I asked locals what they think about it Many say the base brings money so coexistence is best But just as the old airfield made it a battlefield, could the US base cause war again? When I asked, they said few locals really think about another war I planned to eat breakfast at the beach, so I’ll buy food at FamilyMart Wanted a hot drink, so I ate at the inn instead What a fantastic day This road feels amazing! Even in cool air, sunshine feels nice This is Lily Field Park Venue for the annual Golden Week Lily Festival Can I enter from anywhere? Filming spot for ‘Kana Sandō’ These buds aren’t open yet When in full bloom, a million lilies blossom This year not yet, but last year they bloomed early Timing the bloom is hard There’s a ‘Anywhere Door’ here A sweet scent filled the air But my real goal here is actually, just ahead 🤩 You can walk down to the sea from here I came hoping to swim… Wow, no way I can enter in this surf I wonder what happens if I climb down Couldn’t swim, but watching waves crash on the rocks felt strangely soothing After staring awhile, I felt refreshed 😊 Next, the Wajī Lookout Below this cliff lies Wajī, a spring of fresh water which once supported island life People used to climb this 60 m cliff for water, but after the war the US built pipes Now undersea pipes from Okinawa main island supply water Let’s hike down to Wajī Wow, this place is amazing Sheer soaring cliffs and pounded by rough waves on both sides makes for a thrilling drive I really wanted to swim here… but today I’ll just watch On the way down to Wajī I noticed a spot that might have a great view How grand Different from the Wajī lookout yet another stunning scene You can speed down the old airstrip about 2 km long There’s also an active airport elsewhere There’s a Twin Gateway plan to make a northern entry hub for Okinawa Now at Nyatiya Cave (gama) one of Ie Island’s top sights The glimpse of scenery raises my hopes 😊 Wow… what is this… Even before the main cave, the view is epic 😍 Is it okay to raise the bar so high? A very spacious cave Used as an air‑raid shelter during the war and protected many lives, so it’s also called ‘Sen‑nin Gama’ (cave for a thousand) Facing the sea from the very back It’s so wide it may hold a thousand people Sunlight comes in, so it doesn’t feel gloomy The Bijiru Stone in Nyatiya Cave is believed to help couples have children If it feels light, it’s a girl; if it feels heavy, it’s a boy, legend says Can’t read this ‘Child blessing’ (Sand in the carving makes it hard to read) Lift it while praying to be blessed with a child, and your wish may come true It seems meant for women, but I’ll lift it anyway It’s a photo spot, even props like this You could take really pretty shots here Looks nice Next, one of Ie Island’s top beaches— GI Beach ‘GI’ stands for Government Issue, meaning US soldiers It used to be reserved for US officers stationed on Ie hence the name GI Beach From pounding cliffs earlier to this calm sea like a lake with pure white, fluffy sand Ie Island shows many faces Wow, incredible Let’s go to the reef edge It’s super shallow, so it takes a while The water is a bit cloudy That noise right after I dunk the camera— what is it? For a while it’s sandy, but swim a bit and coral appears Lots of blue damselfish Huh??? Something feels off It’s a green sea turtle! Had nothing to grab onto, so I couldn’t stay still The body floats so much Sorry for startling you 🙏 Closer to the reef edge, the water clears Just a bit more to get outside the reef Looks like I can exit through this gap Made it out! About 600 m from the beach It doesn’t drop off suddenly The coral seems dead Yet it’s still pretty impressive It must have been stunning when the coral was healthy Depth was about 7 m I’m getting cold, time to head back Water was 23 ℃ this year, lower than usual At this temp, a 2 mm top isn’t enough I tried 2 mm to travel light, but 3 mm is better for Golden Week I feel I can’t swim back… It’s spring tide, about an hour to low The reef edge was nearly dry I’ll walk inside the reef Dried rocks are super sharp, even 3 mm boots hurt 😣 I enjoy the inner reef on the way So many blue damselfish 😊 Cold! Let’s warm up on the beach Ah—pure bliss 😚 Lazing around feels amazing I thought I’d stay here all day This is the view from me just lounging 😚 I wanted to stay forever, but nature called GI Beach has no toilets or showers Now at Red Beach One of the first US landing beaches Rocks spread out The edges are rounded, so walking is not painful It’s past low tide yet water still flows out Why? Maybe a spring? GI Beach has better scenery and shade, but the reef edge is closer here Maybe that’s why the US landed here? Thinking that, I relaxed Let’s see the main beach of Ie Island If I’d come here first I’d have gone “Wow!” As the main beach, it’s truly stunning It’s the only beach with a swim area They also have showers, toilets, and a shop But snorkeling is banned And outside the swim zone swimming is banned So I didn’t plan to swim here Time to head back to the inn I only ate a Spam‑egg onigiri today 😅 On the beach I didn’t feel hungry Maybe my heart was that full 😊 After dinner I chilled on the roof Caught a shooting star on camera 😊 Day 4 – Wed, Apr 30, 2025 A refreshing morning 😚 Strolling between tobacco fields watching the peak This feels so ‘Ie Island’ What a pleasant morning Really? Yeah, it is A bit chilly though Did you go to the lily festival? Yes, I did But not many flowers yet Last year they were in full bloom again and most had already withered This year they barely bloom It’s the weather How long can you see them? I actually leave today I stayed three nights Is there that much to see? Three nights? Honestly, not nearly enough So, how to spend the final day? My flight home is at 19:00— no other plans 😆 The hostess goes to the main island to pick up her husband I told her she didn’t need to make breakfast, yet she cooked just for me 😆 I’ll take the bus to another beach Nearly made the same mistake 😅 but noticed early today and made it I’m glad I messed up the other day when I had time Safe—2 minutes to spare Is it totally different from the past? Yes, it is Every single road has changed Oh, I see They used to be narrower Right Now, when guests want to go to GI Beach, I drop them at Nishizaki entrance Oh, I understand Thank you I got off in front of Shiradō Store Is this Shiradō Store? Scooters are nice, but walking feels best This is Watarūji Beach No one else here It’s small and cozy, but A very beautiful beach And up ahead is Green Beach A beach on the west end Wow—can I get over there? This spot looks perfect for a nap! Ah, just like this If I get a bit wet, I could reach the next beach Another perfect nap spot here! Beyond here is Green Beach Also a US landing site The beach rock ends and turns into clean sand Heaven is at the tip of Ie Island!? It’s that beautiful 😍 Let’s walk to the end From the shore to the sky, blues blend into one ‘Blueful’— that word popped into my head Let’s drink an Ie Soda and chill Green flavor is shikwasa Perfect to drink on Green Beach! Crisp and refreshing, yet gently sweet— just like Green Beach itself This beautiful shell—could it be Juseira? It reminds me of the shell collector on Iriomote and his proud collection Huh? Something’s here! Pretty big! Maybe a titan triggerfish? It comes this shallow! It’s getting hot, so I’ll move to the shade at Watarūji Beach Time to relax in the shade now The sea and sky framed by rock look like a painting The shoreline here is beach rock Oh—feels so good! Zaza—zazaza— waves slowly mark time A second feels long, but an hour flies Island time is strange Relax more and it passes quicker Ah—I don’t want to leave The hardest part of island trips is this moment Let’s enjoy the way back too! Old Shiradō Store stop That’s tobacco It had flowers, but they topped them and flowers have fallen They bloom pretty pink flowers Why remove the flowers? If we don’t pick them, up on top buds will form Ah, I see If we don’t remove them, the leaves won’t ripen Won’t ripen? They won’t turn yellow Well, we call it ‘umu’ in our terms here After growing, they turn yellow If that’s delayed, we can’t harvest the leaves Like this— these haven’t bloomed yet These are starting to bloom Cut here and the leaves yellow so we can harvest from the lower leaves From the bottom? From below Not the top but the bottom We’re building an underground dam now We draw water from the underground dam Didn’t know that exists We build these reservoir ponds to pipe water to the fields We built them all over, yet still need the underground dam so we’re building it Oh, the beni‑imo tart raw material area They grow them here Thank you— It was fun Thanks for everything The hostess was kind, and meals tasty A very comfortable inn 😄 Please Hello I added another island I want to revisit 😁 Three nights aren’t enough to savor it Such a charming island What a beautifully shaped island I felt its beauty even more than on arrival I kept watching as it grew smaller Thank you for watching 😁
