【4K Walk】Mt. Koya in Spring Part 1: Sacred Day Trip from Osaka | Easy Walks Japan Vol.4

Hello everyone, konnichiwa! Thank you for watching our video. Today, we visit “Koyasan” or Mt. Koya in Wakayama, Japan – where is a part of world heritage “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range”. We have started from Daimon Grand Gateway. Here, in front of Daimon is selected as one of the best 100 sunset view points in Japan. It is very refreshing air and view even in the morning. In this video, we walk from Daimon to the main temple area of Kongobuji. We are going to walk other parts such as Okunoin in Part 2. Enjoy 30-minutes walk with us! We are at the right end of this map, and another end is about 2km in a straight line. The whole area between these two ends is the part of Kongobuji, the main temple of Mt. Koya. This area is the origin of Shingon, Sino-Japanese esoteric Buddhism, originating in 9th century. The townscape continues for a while. This shop sells the green Koya-maki, considered sacred plant in Shingon. You can see many of them in Koyasan. There are about 50 “shukubo” visitors’ lodgings in the temple. This Sainan-in is one of them. Each shukubo has its own unique features, such as vegetarian cuisine, guest rooms, baths, and gardens. You can also participate in early morning religious services in the most shukubos. The pink flowers are blooming. They are called Shakunage in Japanese, grow on steep mountains in the wild. Koyasan is located at altitude of 800m and is famous for shakunage flowers. They bloom in early May at Koyasan. The weather was late this spring, so some trees have not yet bloomed. We are getting into Danjo Garan. This monastic complex is the place “Kukai” Kobo Daishi started to build Koyasan. Kukai is the most famous monk in Japan and saint of Shingon Buddhism. Main services of Koyasan are held in Kondo since middle of 9th century. We are arriving at main temple area of Kongobuji. This video ends here and we will start Part 2 from here. If you like this walk or are interested in the other parts of Koyasan, part 2 is coming soon! Please subscribe, like and leave a comment to support our channel. See you in the next video!
