[Music] [Music] We’ve been staying at Mesa Spirit, an Encore RV resort here in Mesa, Arizona. It’s the first time staying at any of the encors in this area, actually. Right. Not yet. Mhm. This one’s very, very nice. Huge. [Music] Today, we’re going to take this. It’s called Apache Trails. Is it State Highway 88? Yeah, State Route 88. And we’re going to go through Superstition Mountains and we’re going to be going to Tortilla Flat. Tortilla Flat. And uh there’s also a restaurant there called Tortilla Flat. So, well, we we purposely uh did not eat this morning or had our coffee if you can’t tell. Never let adventures pass you by. free and follow your crazy dreams. We’re living our vision in the RV. Come ride with us and you’ll be [Music] free. Nestled in the heart of Arizona’s sonoran desert, the legendary Apache Trail winds through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the southwest. [Music] Yes, we just passed Goldfield, but we need coffee. Yes, we need food and coffee. Coffee. Coffee. We’re going to go up to Tortilla Flat first and then we’ll make our way back this way. [Music] Once a rugged stage coach route, this historic road stretches from the outskirts of Mesa, carving its way through dramatic canyons, towering sora cacti, and stunning desert vistas. With every twist and turn, the Apache Trail reveals a new masterpiece of nature. Rocky cliffs, shimmering lakes, and endless skies that seem to go on forever. But this is just the beginning of our adventure on the Apache Trail. This State Route 88, also called Apache Trail, is also ranked in within the top 10 scenic drives for motorcycle riders. [Music] Canyon Lake is one of the state’s most breathtaking hidden gems. Formed by the damning of the Salt River, this pristine reservoir winds through the rugged Superstition Mountains, offering visitors a stunning contrast of deep blue waters against towering canyon walls. With its dramatic rock formations, desert flora, and abundant wildlife, Canyon Lake is a true oasis in the Arizona desert. [Music] [Music] Deep in the rugged landscapes of Arizona’s Superstition Mountains lies a place where history and legend intertwine. Tortilla [Music] flat. I do believe she’s hungry. [Music] Cheers. Yeah, they’re all saddles. You don’t want to saddle up, Sally? I’m going to have what’s called the hangover hash and Michelle’s going to have the pancakes. The portion sizes are huge. How much money you think’s on the walls and ceilings? A dollar. Would it make you holler? Oh, thank you. Just came to save the day. Yes. Best coffee in town, guys. Holy cow. Look at this. Yeah, it’s huge. Prickly pear pancakes. H and eggs. Oh, I got an egg. What a combination. What a combination. I wanted something healthy. Highly recommend this ash. What’s it called? Hangover hatch. Hangover half. No, I don’t have a hangover. Looks like this restroom is full. So, it’s known as Tortilla Flat, but they also call a Superstition Saloon. And they have a a band that plays out here at Looks like it’s at 11:30. This tiny Old West outpost is a true time capsule of Arizona history. Once a stage coach stop for gold miners, today it’s known for its quirky charm, legendary chili, and dollar bills covering the walls. Each left behind by travelers from around the world. This tiny town has roots stretching back to the days of gold prospectors, outlaws, I’ve been needing a new gun, and pioneers searching for fortune in the unforgiving desert. One of the most famous legends tied to this area is that of Jacob Waltz, better known as the Lost Dutchman. Waltz was a German immigrant who arrived in Arizona in the 19th century, claiming to have discovered a rich gold mine hidden somewhere in the Superstition Mountains. Though he took the secret of its exact location to his grave in 1891, rumors of his fabled mine have fueled countless expeditions, mysterious disappearances, and endless speculation. It’s not true. I’ve never lost a single [Music] gunfight. To this day, treasure hunters still set out on the trails beyond this historic town, hoping to uncover what Waltz left behind. While the gold may remain a mystery, one thing is certain. Tortilla Flat holds a treasure of its own. In the timeless allure of the Wild West, boy, it is getting busy here now. Yeah, we came early, which was a good thing. A group from San Diego along with a group here in Phoenix, they all kind of mingled together and came through with their cars. Bunch of Firebirds here, old cars, and and a bunch of other people. Got really busy. Oh my gosh, it’s packed right now. [Music] One of the best ways to experience the beauty and serenity of Canyon Lake is aboard the historic Dolly Steamboat. This scenic boat tour has been a beloved attraction for decades, offering guests a front row seat to the incredible landscapes and wildlife that call this area home. We stopped down in the marina here. They have a steamboat ride. It’s all sold out today, but I asked the lady here and she said, “Stand off to the side and wait for the line to go through because many times people don’t show up. And if somebody doesn’t show up, u you’ll be able to get on.” And we’re the only ones standing there to wait. So hopefully it’ll just be at least one person or two people. I guess she all want me to go. But there’s quite the line over here. So, this must be something uh special. It’s a hour and a half uh steamboat ride. So, we’ll see if we get on. We got on. People didn’t show up. $70 for the two of us. 35 a piece. This is an hour and a half tour. Uh a scenic tour. Uh dinner one’s 2 hours. It’s Dolly Steamboat Cruise on Canyon Lake. Beautiful lake. Oh my gosh. As you saw with the pictures coming in line, [Music] original ones on the boat here are called the common grale. They are our popcorn cleanup groupy birds here and they are the brown ones are the females. And also the We want to hold on to your popcorn. By the way, we need to make sure we put some um paper towel over the lid there. As the Dolly Steamboat glides across the water, passengers are treated to panoramic views of towering cliffs, unique rock formations, and the lush vegetation that thrives along the shoreline. Keep your eyes peeled. This area is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including big horn sheep scaling the canyon walls, majestic bald eagles soaring overhead, and great blue herand waiting in the shallows. But it’s not just the scenery that makes this journey special. The narrated tour provides fascinating insights into the region’s geology, history, and wildlife, making for an unforgettable and educational experience. Whether you choose the daytime scenic nature cruise or the romantic twilight dinner cruise, each excursion offers a different perspective of the lakes’s natural beauty. For adventurers, photographers, and nature lovers alike, the Dolly Steamboat Tour is more than just a boat ride. It’s a journey through Arizona’s wild and untamed past and a peaceful escape from the hustle of modern life. [Music] [Music] As you look off to either side of the boat, we can see black streaks that run vertically called the desert varnish. What you are seeing is one of the most remarkable biogeeochemical phenomenon air desert regions of the world. Although it may be only a hundth of a millimeter in thickness, desert varnish often colors entire desert mountain ranges with a black or reddish brown coating of manganesees or iron on the surface of the rock. This thin layer also includes cemented clay particles which help to shield the bacteria against extreme heat and intense solar radiation. Desert varnish is formed by colonies of microscopic bacteria living on the rock surface for thousands of years. During heavy rains in July and August, large storms settle over these mountains and deposit inches of rain here, creating beautiful waterfalls that intensify these varnish effects. We receive about 7 in of rain annually here in the Phoenix Valley. [Music] [Music] [Music] of a brown bird mark area. Those that can see where I’m pointing from the front of the boat here. If you look here, you can see straight to our right hand bow just to the left of that brown burmark area about 2 to 4 feet uh 2 to 40 ft out on our right buttons of trees stack like cordwood and petrified. Petrified wood here is created when organic materials have been replaced with minerals while retaining the original structure of this wood. This process occurs when wood becomes buried under sediment and is preserved due to lack of oxygen. Water deposits these minerals in the plant cells which takes hundreds of years to occur. Manganesees, iron, and copper in the mud give petrified wood a variety of different colors. Petrified Forest National Park is located here in northeastern Arizona. Heat. [Music] [Music] Heat. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] Well, that’s well worth doing. That was just a beautiful The guy does a extraordinary job with his voiceovers and the music he puts with this. Very very enjoyable. [Music] Just behind the rugged peaks of The Superstition Mountains lies a place frozen in time. Goldfield, Arizona. Made it down to Goldfield, the ghost town. Boy, I did not expect this many vehicles. 2:45 in the [Music] afternoon. A once booming mining town that now stands as a living tribute to the Wild West. Step into its dusty streets and you’ll feel as though you’ve been transported back to the late 1800s when fortune seekers and outlaws roam these parts in search of golden glory. There’s a place to something to eat over here. You got your merkantile store there, a saloon up there. I’m surprised you’re not working in that salon. Hey, what? No. Playing the piano. The story of Goldfield began in 1892 when rich veins of gold were discovered in the hills. Almost overnight, the town sprang to life, attracting prospectors from all over, eager to strike it rich. Is that the first time you went to a bakery and got a mocha? I needed a little caffeine, so I got a cold coffee. But holy cow, we just got in there and then all of a sudden the swarm of people. You You think you need more caffeine? Yeah. [Music] At its peak, Goldfield had a bustling population complete with saloons, general stores, a blacksmith shop, a school, and even a church. But as quickly as it rose, it fell. The gold ran out, and by 1898, the town was nearly abandoned. Though a few attempts were made to revive the mines, Goldfield eventually faded into history, leaving behind a ghost town with stories to tell. This uh saloon’s the only thing I really remember. They really spruce this place up since the last time I was here back in the 1890s. Don’t hold your age well. Um, don’t look bad, do I? Today, Goldfield has been restored and transformed into a vibrant tourist attraction, giving visitors a chance to experience what life was like in the Old West. [Music] Grand as you stroll Through town, you’ll pass authentic wooden storefronts, a working blacksmith shop, and the legendary mammoth gold mine, where you can take a guided tour deep into the tunnels that once held dreams of untold wealth. But the adventure doesn’t stop there. You can hop aboard the Goldfield Narrow Gauge Railroad, a historic train ride that circles the town, offering views of the Superstition Mountains while sharing tales of the region’s colorful past, even a pretty good, believe it or not. And if you’re up for a bit of action, don’t miss the reenacted gunfights in the streets where outlaws and lawmen go head-to-head in a showdown straight out of the Wild West. [Music] [Music] [Music] When we were up in the brothel, the lady told us that uh this place burned down. She thought it was in the 1940s. We’d have to check double check that. Like 41 or something, but like the whole town except for what was it? I was getting there. Oh, here. The f the building when you first come in, the ice cream shop or something. That was That’s the only original building left. Ice cream parlor [Music] rebuilt. Perfect. Thank you. [Music] You see that? What? Someone’s taking their kids to the bordello. It did say it was family friendly. [Music] Do you want to rip the paper? Well, yeah. [Music] For those drawn to the supernatural, Goldfield is rumored to be one of Arizona’s most haunted towns. Visitors and paranormal investigators alike report eerie encounters in the old buildings. From ghostly whispers to shadowy figures, visitors and paranormal investigators alike report eerie encounters in the old buildings. Whether you’re a believer or a skeptic, one thing is certain. Goldfield is full of surprises. Whether you’re here for history, adventure, or just a taste of the Old West, Goldfield, Arizona is a place where the past comes [Music] alive. So, saddle up, take a step back in time, and experience the legends of the Wild West firsthand. [Applause] It’s pretty neat up here. Very It is beautiful drive. It is. Highly recommend. Thank you, Craig and Tamara, by the way, suggesting that we come up here for today. Um, both Tortilla Flat and Goldfield. Yeah. Town. I’m glad we went on the the um that tour, the boat tour. Oh, yeah. That was like a bonus. The Dolly Steamboat. Dolly Steamboat. That was a bonus. Surprise bonus. Yeah. Well worth it. This is obviously very touristy, but um it’s cute. We were going to eat supper here, but we decided to go to a a place that Craig and Tamara suggested as well. Y I’m sure either one that we picked, we’re not sure yet, but I’m sure it’s going to be good. There’s a lot to do, a lot to see up here. Mhm. Can’t do everything there is to see in one day, especially if you go hiking. But what we did all in one day is definitely doable. Yeah. Very enjoyable. Yep. We had a good time. grateful about everything because we have been working hard right from the very start. We get this far. But now it’s time for us to stay up until it’s late. We’ve come a long way. So we deserve it. Call it a day and cate. Let’s cate. Call it a [Music] day. Let’s cate. Call it a day. Let’s cate.
