[Rabbit Island, JAPAN] So Many Baby Bunnies! 🐰 Welcome to the Land of Bunnies | Okunoshima うさぎ島/大久野島
Day trip to “Rabbit Island” in the Seto Inland Sea, where wild rabbits live. Once again we met many cute rabbits. Please enjoy the spring trip to Okunoshima 🐰🌷 Good morning. We are at Hiroshima station this morning. Today we are going to Okunoshima, known as Rabbit Island. The bus stop is a 3-minute walk from the ticket gate of Hiroshima Station. It is at the south exit. Departure 🚎 The bus goes to Tadanoumi station, the nearest station to Okunoshima. Convenient as there are no transfers. It takes about 1.5 hours from Hiroshima station. Walk for about 5 minutes to the ferry terminal. The ferry leaves from in front of the ticket office. 🛳️ Pretty pink post. They also offer luggage storage for 500 yen per item. Let’s go inside the ticket office. They sell local specialties and cute rabbit-themed items. 🐰🍋 I’m going to buy a ferry ticket from the vending machine. Round-trip ticket. There seem to be two types of boats to Okunoshima — a small pink boat and a larger ferry. I receive my return ticket. Okunoshima is the island I can see right in front of me. The ferry is departing. Let’s take a quick look inside the ferry. Some things to keep in mind when spending time with the rabbits on the island. Oh, the island is already right in front of us. We arrived in about 15 minutes from the port. The cherry blossoms are in full bloom. 🌸 I’ve already spotted a rabbit! Looks like everyone’s busy playing tag. Hiding under the roots of a tree. Come here. Here you go. Such a little baby bunny🐰 Is it tasty? Oh, one came down from the mountain too. Looks like they’re curious about the bag with rabbit food. It’s over here. Turns out it was the mizuna (potherb masterd) they were after. Why not come eat over here? Looks like they got tired of the rabbit pellets. Now they’re all about the mizuna. These little ones too. These two seem really close. Maybe they’re siblings since they look alike. This is the forest where the rabbits have their burrows. Just relaxing. Want to eat something? Maybe you’re full. Or… maybe a little more? Does you feel scary here? You came down. Looks like this one prefers rabbit food. You ate it all up. No second helping? That’s okay. A tree branch had broken off and fallen to the ground. 🌱 You’re eating it, aren’t you? ☺️ The fresh greenery and cherry blossoms are so beautiful. The view is lovely too. Just walking here feels wonderful. Look—two little bunnies over there. So cute 💕 That’s a perfect spot for a little rest, isn’t it? Bye-bye. Grow up safe and strong, okay? I’ll head over to the campsite now. Looks like everyone’s tummy is full. Would you like some food? You’re full too, aren’t you? There are so many visitors, so you must be getting lots of food. Today, it doesn’t feel like the bunnies are running up to me like they used to. Hello there. Hold on a second. Let’s try giving some to that little one too. Here you go. Are you my fluffy friend? You’ve been doing well, haven’t you? Hello again. Here you go, please help yourself. You’re drinking some water. Go ahead, eat up. This one’s grooming itself. They look like they’re getting along, but I wonder if there’s a bit of a hierarchy between them. You can eat over here if you like. Everywhere I look, the flowers are so beautiful. It’s so soothing. ☺️ The “SEA SPICA” is docked, a ship that tours the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. I’ve heard it’s really nice, so I’d like to take a ride on it next time. Spring break is over, but it’s still really crowded today. Such a sexy pose from this bunny. The bunnies are on alert because of the crows’ calls. 🐦⬛ I’ve arrived at the square in front of the hotel. There are lots of spots where wild boars have dug up the ground. The bunnies are coming down from the mountain. Here you go. I remember you well, Kuro-chan, with that unique pattern. 🐰 You’re guarding your nest. What a lovely coat color you have. Looks like you’re full and enjoying some grass as a treat. That was Kuro-chan earlier. So, this is your home. I think I’ll take a little break now. How cute. 💕 Resting together as a family. There’s some food left in front of the bunnies, but no one is eating it. Crows, rats, and wild boars — the bunnies’ natural enemies — come for food like this. Collecting this leftover food adds to the work of the volunteers and the people who manage the island. Let’s all follow the rules and keep the island safe for the bunnies. 🙇 Good morning, did you just wake up? The cream and white coloring is so beautiful. You’re so small compared to the adults. So sweet 🥰 The baby bunny has gone back home. I think I’ll have lunch too. Today, I’m heading to a restaurant where I can get a set meal. I’ll have the octopus set meal. With inflation and the difficulty of getting supplies to the island, I think the food was definitely tastier two years ago. 🥹 Thank you for the meal. Personally, I think I prefer this café. Here, they mainly serve light meals like udon noodles and curry, along with drinks. You can buy popular T-shirts, bunny-themed goods, and local specialties here. Everything is so lovely. ✨ Tadanoumi is home to the Aohata jam headquarters. Rabbit cookies. Let’s go for a walk this afternoon. 🚶♀️🐰 Ah, the two baby bunnies from earlier are lying down! So cute! I think I’ll head towards the mountain. A family of bunnies. Looks like they’re full too. Water is precious for the bunnies, so let’s avoid putting vegetables or anything else in their water bowls. Such adorable siblings. Big yawn 🥱 What’s the matter? Oh, so there are three of you! The water is kindly provided by volunteers. Was it a bit too cold? Oops, I was in the way—sorry about that. Nibbling on grass here and there… I hope you grow up safe and strong. Bye-bye. Is that your home under the fallen tree?☺️ It has so much charm. Want some food? Oh, maybe not hungry right now. Last spring, there were many bunnies around here too. Now, it feels like there are fewer. During World War II, this island was secretly used to produce poison gas. Even now, war ruins remain, telling the story of those times. Rabbits don’t see very well. But they can hear sounds from as far as 3 kilometers away—amazing ears. I found a baby bunny in the forest. Would you like something to eat? It’s a little scary, isn’t it? Looks like the baby bunny was hungry. Starting to get a bit sleepy now. 😴 The older bunnies looked pretty relaxed. Full tummy and ready for a little adventure. Hello there 🐰 Is she your mama? Munching on some tiny flowers? Here’s some food for you. Go ahead. The bunnies living in the hills were more likely to accept food. Today, I’m going to explore a different trail than usual. Climbing this endless staircase… Wow, what an amazing view. That’s a really tall transmission tower. The mimosa is absolutely beautiful. So you’re living all the way up here, even this far into the mountains. The birdsong was incredible—this place felt like a little paradise. Hello there. There’s some food over that way. They say the view from the observatory is spectacular. The mimosa trees are in full bloom. This central battery ruins was built by the former Japanese army around 1900, before the Russo-Japanese War. Among all the gun batteries constructed across Japan at the time, this one is said to be the most well-preserved. Wow—amazing! You can see the whole Seto Inland Sea from here. Facing west—toward Kyushu. Facing east—toward Tokyo. This was the most breathtaking view I saw on Okunoshima. Oh—someone placed a water bowl way up here. I’m almost at the top of the mountain. Hello there. After finishing their food, it’s time to dig and rub on some twigs. Lying down. All the flowers are in full bloom, and the bees are buzzing happily around them. Bye for now, Kuro-chan. Stay safe and well. Oh—there are two more here too. So cute 🐰 They look full and happy—time to relax. Bye-bye. I also felt so soothed by all the flowers in full bloom this time. One of them wandered off into the woods. There seem to be a lot more black bunnies up in the mountains. One came down. This used to be a power plant, but now it’s just a ruin. There’s something very sad I need to talk about. (Many of you in Japan may already know about it, as it was widely reported.) In January this year, a man who harmed the rabbits of Okunoshima was arrested. Because of this incident, nearly 100 bunnies lost their lives. Walking around the island now… I could really feel it. There were fewer rabbits than usual. Even so, many people are still visiting, and I noticed more food being left out than before. For the bunnies to live here peacefully, I believe it’s more important than ever for each of us to show kindness and follow the rules. It’s almost time for the ferry. ⛴️ Here you go. Since more than half of the rabbit food is left, I’ll take it back with me. So curious about the camera! 📸 This trip, I was lucky to meet so many baby bunnies. 🐰 Take care, little ones. Thank you for today! Bye-bye, see you again. Thank you so much for watching until the very end.

This time, we visited Rabbit Island (Okunoshima) again. It’s been 5 months since our last trip in November. The island, about 4 km around, is home to around 500 rabbits. We were lucky to meet many baby bunnies born this spring.
Sadly, earlier this year in January, a heartbreaking incident occurred where many rabbits lost their lives. As we walked around the island, it felt like there were fewer bunnies than usual…
Still, we had a wonderful time meeting so many adorable rabbits. At the same time, it reminded us how important it is for each of us to be kind and respectful, so the bunnies can continue to live peacefully here.
We hope you’ll enjoy the journey all the way to the end. 💐

子うさぎたちに囲まれて…🐰 世界で唯一のうさぎの島。野生のうさぎが暮らす大久野島へ行ってきた ⛴️ Rabbit Island, JAPAN.

It was sad to hear about the killing of so many rabbits, but I am glad there are so many new baby rabbits around.
People need to be more educated about the do’s and don’ts of visiting Okunoshima, particularly the handling of rabbits and the leaving of food that attracts other pests.
BTW hope to see you again this year in Saijo for the sake festival.
Rabbits are so cute
