Ai Yoshinogawa Trolley train passes through the lower reaches of the Yoshino River valley, offering spectacular views of rural Tokushima Prefecture in Shikoku.
The indigo and cream colors of the train reflect the history of the area: the Yoshino River has long been a cultivation ground of indigo, a raw material for dyes.
The valley’s Awa indigo dye has been manufactured and sold since the Edo period (1603–1868) and remains renowned today for its high-quality craftsmanship.
As you view the river from the train, you will get a sense of how important this 194 km-long body of water is for indigo production, which takes one year from seedling stage to fermentation.
The Ai Yoshinogawa Trolley train serves a specialty ekiben (boxed lunch made for train trips) featuring local chicken dishes (reservations required).
Journey through Tokushima’s cultural heartland!
