Riding the World’s Most Beautiful Train, Bernina Express | Italy 🇮🇹 – Switzerland 🇨🇭

Today, we ride the world’s most beautiful panoramic train The Bernina Express route, between Italy and Switzerland We will cross the Alps, glaciers, lakes, tunnels and alpine villages Please enjoy the ride! Hello from Milan, Italy! Tomorrow morning, we will board the most scenic train in the world, the Bernina Express This will be our route (Tirano to St. Moritz) Morning. We are at Milan central station The Bernina Express doesn’t depart from Milan but from a small town in the northern part of Italy, right by the Swiss border Called Tirano First, we’ll have to take a regional train to Tirano Train departs at 7:20 am Looks pretty modern The Milan -Tirano ride takes 2:30 hours Ciao, ciao, Milan We already have an amazing view And this is where we will head today Passing by Lake Como Nice Looks so far away Vineyards This means we’re close Arrived in Tirano in almost no time Tirano is a charming town in northern Italy It’s best known as the starting (or ending) point of the Bernina Express Map of town Tirano station This is where our journey starts Bernina Express sign From here, we head straight to Saint Moritz, one of the most beautiful towns in Switzerland We can purchase the tickets online or directly from the train station I am not Japanese, so little help here please Will check the comments for translation, thanks in advance! Fee is 33 CHF (40 USD) per adult in 2nd class for one way During the off-season, the famous Bernina Express runs just once a day And it can be quite dark in the morning, especially at the start of the journey I’ll take the regular train instead, which runs every hour of the day We’ll enjoy the same scenic route as the Bernina Express, meaning we won’t miss out on anything This is the beauty we’ll be riding today Leave at 11 am for St. Moritz Train offers both first-class and second-class seats First-class (just a bit more expensive than regular) We will be staying in the regular class This is it Welcome on board Looks very clean and comfortable All seats have a sharing table by the window Map of the red train routes This is going to be ours Bonus: Bernina Express doesn’t have openable windows such as regular trains This is how the panorama car looks like One minute late Off we go Luckily, I jumped back on the train in time The ride lasts 2:11 hours So excited!! Hello to you too In just a few seconds, we’ll cross the border between Italy and Switzerland Now we’re in Italy And now we’re in Switzerland We continue through Campascio and Campocologno towns, close to the Italian-Swiss border The route covers a distance of about 122 kilometers (76 miles) The air feels more expensive here It’s a waterfall Now, this is amazing Approaching the famous Brusio Circular Viaduct A true engineering marvel Mamma mia Tip for the journey: Sit on the back of the train to enjoy the best views and watch the train winding The Brusio Circular Viaduct is one of the most iconic landmarks of the Bernina Express route Built in 1908, the unique spiral bridge allows the train to handle the steep ascent very smoothly A masterpiece of railway engineering and an absolute highlight of the journey… Watching the train curve perfectly along the viaduct is 😱 We continue our way to the mountains Are those cows? Probably Very picturesque We departed from Tirano at 429 meters above sea level And will soon begin our ascent to the highest point of the Bernina Express route Reaching an altitude of 2,253 meters above sea level Train runs at a speed of around 30-40 kilometers per hour It is perfect for admiring the landscapes without missing a single moment First stop is in Brusio Ándale, ándale! I can feel the freshest air in the world right now So refreshing Along the journey, we will experience all four seasons The journey crosses 196 bridges and passes through 55 tunnels Train is riding so close to the stone walls I can even touch them (Better not do that) Announcements on the train are made in Italian and English You always know which stop or highlight is coming next Stopped at Miralago station, right by the Poschiavo Lake Still a long way ahead Poschiavo Lake is one of the jewels of the journey A turquoise lake surrounded by green mountains The water is so calm it mirrors the sky and the peaks The lake stretches for about 2.5 kilometers Beautiful Or how we say in Italian Bellissimo 🇮🇹 There are a few benches here and there The Bernina Express route was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008 It’s one of the few railways in the world to cross the Alps without a cogwheel All the curves and climbs that we’ll experience today were designed over 100 years ago I love the contrast between greenery and white peaks, summer and winter The perfect lake postcard, right outside the train window Just arrived in Le Prese A small, charming village right by the lake Crystal-clear water Someone waving at us I wonder if the people living in these villages are bothered by the trains passing every day Sorry for keeping you waiting but I have a reservation for my lunch in St. Moritz at 2 pm precisely Can’t be late for that! Train is painted red because it’s the traditional color of the Rhaetian Railway The bright red was chosen over a century ago to stand out clearly against the snow, forests, mountains, etc Or maybe it’s inspired by the colors of the Swiss flag Next, Poschiavo town Many people waiting Poschiavo is a little town with colorful houses and narrow streets I can stare at these mountains all day long.. Hello, train neighbor I also have a power outlet Ok, let’s continue The track is only one meter wide I am not an engineer but I found out that this way it allows the train to make tight curves and steep climbs into the mountains It doesn’t really matter which side of the train you sit on The landscape is beautiful on both sides Wait, I see another train approaching Bonjour Do they only have red trains in Switzerland? It’s the first train I’ve seen passing by us on this journey Milkas Definitely the most expensive milk in the world Black and white sheeps Just casually grazing with a million-dollar view HaHa Passing by Poschiavo town most probably Looks wonderful The gradient that follows is one of the reasons why the Bernina Railway is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site The 7-degree steep incline And yet, the train climbs it so smoothly you barely notice Air feels colder up here You can feel the altitude in your breath It’s one of the highest railway tracks in Europe, reaching over 2,200 meters Top views over the Poschiavo Valley I always wondered… How is Switzerland this splendid? Someone brought her red scarf We’re somewhere in the middle of the route Still a long and beautiful way to go Soon we’ll leave the valley behind and head straight into the Alps Switzerland feels like a perfect postcard come to life Every mountain, every lake, every village look unreal Even the cows seem to live without stress No way It’s the Bernina Express The original red train, panoramic windows and all the nice stuff It looks almost the same as ours, except for the last cabins I personally think that openable windows are better (and cheaper) Just feeling the breeze Simple, perfect moments up here The Bernina Express railway isn’t the only way to reach St. Moritz from Italy But it’s by far the most beautiful You could drive or take a regular train through other routes… Nothing beats riding through tunnels, viaducts and mountain villages like this Switzerland is often called the world’s most beautiful country And riding through it like this… it’s easy to see why Swiss Alps cover about 60% of Switzerland’s total area The tallest mountain in Switzerland is Dufourspitze, 4,634 meters Matterhorn, the most famous one, has 4,478 meters Soon entering Galleria Puntalta One of many tunnels carved straight through the mountain I’m curious… do avalanches ever happen here in winter? With these steep slopes and all that snow, it seems possible Nice looking mountain peak up there Cavaglia A small stop surrounded by forest This area is known for the Cavaglia Glacier Garden Over 30 giant potholes carved into the rock by ancient glaciers They call them “giant’s kettles” Deep, round holes formed by swirling meltwater Glacier water Can we spot any animals here? I think I need to take a seat now I’ve had my head out the window the whole time and I didn’t even notice how fast time flew by Never mind It’s way too beautiful to sit down Everyone’s glued to the windows anyways I believe this roof is here to protect the track from avalanches Makes sense We’re approaching Alp Grüm One of the most iconic stops on the route No road access, only the train can bring you up here So remote For people who are afraid of heights, I am sorry Longest tunnel on the Bernina Express route is the Charnadüra-Tunnel II, measuring 689 meters in length It’s located just after departing from St. Moritz, as the train begins its ascent toward the Bernina Pass This is where we’re supposed to see the glacier during winter time Right behind Alp Grum is the Palu Glacier In spring and summer, it still holds thick ice and snow It flows down from Piz Palu (one of the most iconic peaks in the region) I am cold now More and more snow It’s the Alp Grum station Situated at an altitude of 2,091 meters (6860 ft) Three more stops to go until our final destination The train doesn’t stay long There’s only a hotel and restaurant by to the station Look at this view Mountain climbing enthusiasts, it’s for you Even though the snow is now pretty melted Okay, this tunnel in front looks pretty narrow Yep, I was right Almost ended the video dramatically right there Why did we stop? I can use a blanket right now This is Lago Bianco No wonder it’s called “Bianco”, which means white in Italian It’s white During winter season, it is entirely frozen It’s located at 2,234 meters above sea level, right near the highest point of the Bernina line Lago Bianco is an artificial lake, created for hydroelectric power It collects meltwater from surrounding glaciers and high-altitude streams This part looks like a pool Arriving at Ospizio Bernina The highest point of the railway and of our route Now 2,253 meters above sea level AWESOME Station sits right between Lago Bianco and Lej Nair (the White and Black Lakes) I’m not really a mountain lover… But I could definitely get used to this Lake is looking like flat cotton candy A single tree? Poor little tree It marks a special point on the journey One side of the lake drains toward the Mediterranean Sea The other toward the Black Sea That’s pretty incredible Not much grows up here The Bernina Express railway is considered one of the most beautiful train routes in the world Because in just a few hours, you travel from sunny vineyards to snowy glaciers From Italy to Switzerland, two of the most beautiful countries in Europe From 429 meters in Tirano… all the way up to 2,253 meters at Ospizio Bernina I am glad I had the chance to see this beauty We will start descending Train will begin its slow ride back toward civilization We’ll soon pass Bernina Diavolezza, a ski resort in winter I’m already thinking about what to eat in St. Moritz… Maybe their classic wurstel with fries? And now I’ve just realized… I haven’t had a single coffee today I was so captivated by the view and the ride that I almost forgot about my chocolate supplies Cheers to the red train journey Yum Very chocolatey Bernina Diavolezza Now I see that there are many people on this train station And many of them are skiing I don’t know how to ski, but skiing in the Swiss Alps? I’m in I think we are close to St. Moritz Train is getting some speed now Are we late or something? I feel like I’m in Fast and Furious Alpine edition Actually we still have a little more way to go But hey, the longer the wait, the bigger the reward It’s a waterfall between the rocks Crossing over a small river Passing by Surovas A small mountain village surrounded by forest Next stop and the last one is Pontresina Pontresina Switzerland in one frame: scenic red trains, high-quality watches and mountain peaks Ten minutes to go before we arrive in St. Moritz The bridge has “UNESCO World Heritage” written right on it There are two Bernina Express cars left here St. Moritz One of the most beautiful and definitely one of the most expensive towns in the world One million dollar view in front of us Precisely on time 1:11 pm Let’s explore the city, shall we? It’s a map with all the beautiful train routes across Switzerland I believe the Zermatt to Montreux route is stunning too First impression of St. Moritz? Beautiful Badrutt’s Palace Hotel One of the most iconic luxury hotels in St. Moritz Right across from the hotel Luxury shops such as Gucci, Dior, Bvlgari Cartier couldn’t be missing from here St. Moritz is one of the world’s most famous alpine resorts It hosted the Winter Olympics twice Lunch time at Hauser restaurant Pretty picturesque Cozy mountain feel Let’s see the winter menu now Cold plates and salads on the first page Soups and healthy bowls Sandwiches and pasta Rosti, fish And yes… the grilled wurstel Their traditional sausage, a classic Swiss meal I will also get a coffee Right outside the restaurant window we can see the Steffani Hotel Fastest service in the world It took barely 2 minutes to bring the kaffee creme I’ll need a bit more milk though That many cows in Switzerland and only one pack of milk? Only if I knew Good Five-minute service for the second course? Now that’s what I call Swiss timing McDonald’s should learn from them I got the veal sausage and they also brought me some caramelised onion sauce Looks like jam Small garden salad topped with some kind of white balsamic sauce Bon appetite! See what we got for the $30 meal Sausage is soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside First time tasting a Swiss sausage Should I be critical? Salad looks fresh and colorful I love beetroot Didn’t see it because it was on the bottom Well One time experience 🙂 I’d give a 5 for the wurstel 8 for the rest Actually that’t not funny at all CHF 31 ($35) for one person Ah, St. Moritz vibes Back outside and now in search for a good bakery Any recommendations? Found a nice cafe near the train station Only croissants left? Should I risk it and go for the last muffin? Danke Foamy cappuccino $5.5 2x croissants I would love to stay longer here but I can’t Goodbye Looks pretty packed this time See you again when I win the lottery ticket This coffee deserves a round of applause Clap clap clap Bye bye I really enjoyed our short and fun little stop here Well, unfortunately our window is stuck so I can’t open it during the whole ride But I have food to comfort me until I found an available one Starting with an apricot croissant It actually smells more like cinnamon Next up, their house-style croissant Tastes literally like a pretzel It is salty and the interior is super soft The apricot wins this time The mountains are usually very clear during afternoons What a ride Honestly, one of the best things I’ve done in Europe From Tirano to St. Moritz, it’s like watching all four seasons in one day I still can’t believe this train climbs over 2,200 meters One thing that impressed me about the red train is that the railway was built over 100 years ago… and it’s still running perfectly It’s the highest railway crossing in the Alps Regarding our stop in the most renowned alpine resorts in the world St. Mortitz is definitely a feel The food wasn’t exactly what I expected But aside from that, I was very pleased One hour and a half in St. Moritz wasn’t enough But maybe just enough to say: I’ve been here. I’ve seen it. Overall, the experience was definitely worth it I’d do it again in winter, summer, autumn, anytime Back in Milan after a long and beautiful day Hope you enjoyed the red train journey Thank you for your watching! See you very soon.

◽️Curiosities
The Bernina Express is famous for being a “ride through the clouds,” offering 360-degree panoramic views thanks to its large glass windows. It operates year-round, showcasing completely different landscapes depending on the season, from snow-covered valleys in winter to green meadows in summer.

The engineering marvels along the route, like the Brusio Circular Viaduct, were built over a century ago and still stand strong today. No cogwheels are used – the train overcomes the steep gradients purely through clever railway design.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Bernina Express is not just a train ride, it’s a breathtaking experience across two cultures, languages, and stunning alpine scenery.

Thank you very much for watching! See you soon. 🥰
