Senso-ji Asakusa Tour: Tokyo’s Oldest Temple & Must-Visit Landmark | Japan Travel VLOG 2024
Let’s visit the famous Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa today Departing from hotel in Hamamatsucho Planning to take the Toei Asakusa Line subway There’s no need to rush in after arriving at Senso-ji Temple You can first visit the Asakusa Culture Center across the street The 8th-floor observation deck offers a panoramic view of the surroundings The entire Nakamise-dori street can be seen clearly from here A full view of the Tokyo Skytree can also be captured The visit is started after the view is enjoyed from above The entrance to Senso-ji Temple, Kaminarimon Gate (Thunder Gate) On either side are statues of the gods of thunder and wind Kaminarimon was originally built in 942 and was destroyed by fire in 1865 The current gate was rebuilt in 1960, donated by Panasonic founder Matsushita On the back of the gate are statues of the Golden Dragon and Heavenly Dragon Passing through Kaminarimon leads to the Nakamise shopping street Nakamise Shopping Street is the main approach to Senso-ji Temple The 250-meter stone-paved path is lined with many food and souvenir shops Senso-ji Temple was founded in 628 It is the oldest temple in Tokyo It attracts over 30 million visitors every year It is one of the most iconic and popular tourist destinations in Japan The official name of Senso-ji Temple is Kinryu-zan Senso-ji It is the head temple of the Sho-kannon sect Legend says two fisherman brothers accidentally netted a Kannon statue It is believed to be the manifestation of Bodhisattva Kannon The statue was later enshrined by monks and a temple was built for worship Ahead is the Hozomon Gate (Treasure House Gate) A Nio guardian statue is placed on each side inside the gate The nearby five-story pagoda is about 53 meters tall The back of the Hozomon Gate The huge straw sandals are offerings to the Nio guardians, are said to repel evil Passing through the Hozomon gate leads to Senso-ji‘s main hall Areas for buying amulets, drawing fortunes, and offering incense Many worshippers gather in front of the main incense burner Worshippers fan the incense smoke toward their bodies This is because the incense smoke is believed to purify both body and mind The body parts touched by the smoke are believed to become healthier The dragon deity statue in the Chozuya (hand-washing pavilion) The octagonal stone water basin For worshippers to wash their hands and rinse mouths before praying Main hall of Senso-ji The building is 29 meters tall and is supported by 56 pillars The current structure was rebuilt in 1958 after multiple fires and war The main hall enshrines the Kannon statue, hence called Kannon-do Hall The ceiling painting “Heavenly Beings Scattering Flowers” And the central “Dragon Painting” The plaque “Fearlessness Giving” symbolizes the Bodhisattva Kannon The top floor of the five-story pagoda enshrines relics of Shakyamuni Buddha You can collect Goshuin (temple stamps) inside the Yogodo Hall Buddha statues, stone monuments and shrines around the temple Denboin Street The most nostalgic and retro-style street in Asakusa Both sides are lined with unique food stalls and souvenir shops The ever-crowded Asakusa Menchi, famous for its fried minced meat cutlet The staff is making the traditional sweet, warabi mochi Kannon-dori Shopping Street The 85-year-old traditional senbei (rice cracker) shop “Asakusa Izumiya” Their cat-shaped rice crackers are very popular That’s it for today’s trip to Senso-ji temple See you at the next spot!
