1. Takachiho Gorge is a breathtaking natural wonder in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. Carved by the Gokase River, the narrow gorge features sheer basalt cliffs and a stunning 17-meter waterfall called Manai Falls. Visitors can enjoy scenic boat rides through the emerald waters or walk along the lush riverside trail to take in the mystical beauty and tranquil atmosphere. It’s a place steeped in legend, often linked to Japan’s ancient mythology.
2. Motonosumi Shrine is a stunning coastal Shinto shrine located in Nagato, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. Established in 1955, the shrine features a striking path of 123 vermilion torii gates that gracefully wind down a cliffside, leading to the Sea of Japan. This picturesque setting has earned it recognition as one of Japan’s most beautiful places.
3. Mount Aso, located in Kumamoto Prefecture on Japan’s Kyushu Island, is home to one of the world’s largest active volcanic calderas. At its heart lies the Nakadake Crater, the most active of Aso’s five peaks. This crater measures approximately 600 meters in diameter and 130 meters in depth, often emitting white smoke and featuring a milky green crater lake .
4. Kusasenri Plateau is a scenic grassland area located at the base of Mount Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture. Surrounded by volcanic peaks, the plateau features wide, open fields with grazing horses and cows, and a pond that reflects the sky on calm days. It’s a popular spot for nature walks, horseback riding, and enjoying panoramic views of Aso’s vast caldera and steaming crater.
