[4k]Kyoto Stroll / Gion Festival Struck by Evening Showers
The Gion Matsuri’s Yoiyama is a key event in Kyoto’s annual Gion Festival, held every July. The festival originated in the Heian period as a ritual to pray for the end of epidemics at Yasaka Shrine. Yoiyama takes place over three days from July 14th to 16th, during which the city is adorned with lanterns and decorations, creating an enchanting atmosphere.
To enjoy Yoiyama, start by exploring the beautifully crafted Yamaboko (festival floats) displayed in various neighborhoods. These floats are intricately designed and showcase remarkable artistry. At night, the lanterns are lit, transforming the streets into a magical scene. Additionally, numerous food stalls line the streets, offering local delicacies and specialties, adding to the festive experience.
During this period, many people flock to Kyoto to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, making Gion Matsuri a cherished highlight of the summer in Kyoto.
