The statue is that of the bull, Nandi and not that of a cow. You have visited a Shiva temple, hence the statue of the bull, facing lord Shiva.

Halebeedu, specifically the Hoysaleshwara Temple and Chennakeshava Temple in Belur.
North:
Eklingji Temple
And Ranakpur Jain Temple: A Symphony in Marble.

21:20, Lingam is lord shiva, the god of destruction. He takes a phalic form as a Lingam! Don't know the history as to why or how though!
That is a Bull, not a Cow, Nandi. Shiva 's Mount.
Unlike European Bulls, which have broad muscular shoulders only, Indian Bulls have a distinct hump on shoulders also, unlike cows. U will notice as u travel north.
