I Tried to Walk 100KM Across Hong Kong… It Was BRUTAL 🇭🇰

Walking 100KM across Hong Kong—how hard could it be? The MacLehose Trail is one of the most grueling long-distance hikes in Asia, stretching from the east to the west of the territory. It winds through towering peaks, dense jungles, and rugged coastlines, with brutal elevation gains and unpredictable weather. I’ve taken on some tough challenges before, but this might be the most intense yet.

With my gear packed and my legs ready (or so I thought), I set off on this multi-day trek, unsure if I’d be able to push through. From exhaustion and blisters to breathtaking views and unexpected surprises, this journey tested my endurance in ways I didn’t expect. Would the relentless climbs and sheer distance prove too much, or could I actually complete this insane challenge?

One step at a time, I pushed forward—but did I make it to the end? Watch until the final moments to find out if I conquered the MacLehose Trail or if it conquered me. 🇭🇰

  1. Thank you so much for this video. I was great to see the Hong Kong countryside again. My father, and later my cousins, grew up on top of the Peak on Hong Kong Island. Their home overlooked the south side of the island, so not the city (although they could see Aberdeen). I remember staying there and loving the view over the steep hills of Hong Kong's countryside, so this brought back memories from childhood holidays there.
By the way, I don't think you realised that along the whole trail you were NOT on an island. Hong Kong has a LAND border with 'mainland' China, and you were only few miles from that border. Hong Kong has a great many islands, but you weren't on any of them!

  2. 11:20 Brilliant statement, mate.

Just for future reference, trekking poles and knee braces saved me from the incredible knee pain hiking downhill. Maybe it will help you too. All the best!

  3. You have no idea how much I appreciate your wonderful vids… you have gotten me through chemo, good days and bad days, I'm wheelchair accessible only and you take me everywhere ❤❤❤❤❤.. thank you!!

  4. I've never seen anyone hike with an umbrella before 🤔 Looks like a fun hike K'Paddy.

  5. I had just 24h in the city on way way from Moscow to Hanoi, and being jatleged I just left my hotel at 4 am to get to Victoria peak and walk back. I was soooo happy I could do it without crowds. I wish I could come there again and after this video I have THAT much to see))) Thank you!

  6. Well done though i think it's not the highest mountain in China lower than 25th on the list

  7. I would probably never go out of my way to watch someone hike this trail. I am here merely for the enjoyment of watching Paddy take on another adventure. Well done!

  8. You learn something everyday,I had never heard of this trail before,I have walked 120 miles of the Thames pathway, but that is nearly all flat, thank you for your videos

  9. Excellent vlog Paddy!! That was the serious challenge and good on you for finishing it! Lots of interesting facts, so much beautiful nature and a sprinkling of monkey porn haha! Well done!

  10. I saw the time of this video and thought it will take me several try’s to get through
But no I got into it enough to make it through in one try
Great video and yes I’m proud of you as that’s a long tough looking hike

  11. HI Paddy, ex British Army Officer and Expedition Leader. Your kit list was ok, you got the main things covered. The main mistakes people make these days; 1) not bringing enough food, or even emergency rations over and above what you think you'll need; 2) having gear they don't know how to use, or haven't tested before setting off; 3) maps/navigation – granted the route was signed, but lose the route or need to break off it, and ….. so a map would have been useful (it's surprising how many people need rescuing because the battery on their iphone died; 4) warm weather gear despite what the forecast might predict, 5) not enough water, good you had a filter, but maybe carrying 2 or 3 litres in case water sources are less readily available as expected, especially if food needs rehydrating.
Other than that, and this is no doubt a habit from your normal filming, but that's a lot of unnecessary weight and camera gear. I think I counted 3? cameras and a drone, and accessories for several, whereas one camera, extra batteries, one set of accessories and you'd have reduced a fair amount of weight.
All round though, a great experience and thanks for sharing.

Edit – tent pegs go in 45 degrees or thereabouts, angled towards the tent. Yours looked a bit haphazard and facing out making it easier for strong winds to pull them out.

  12. Congratulations! What an amazing trek!
A much more experienced hiker than me taught me to roll my hips when heading down Whistler Mountain. Took a lot of pressure off my knees.
Re packing, I would have taken more socks. Having fresh socks to change into even on a long day hike makes my feet feel so much better.

  13. Hi Paddy, This is one of your best video's. Congratulations! You have definitely taken your career to the next level. I'm glad to see you take on these sorts of challenges and document it for your subscribers. I had no idea that this trail existed in Hong Kong. I'm impressed! There are plenty of fantastic trails in Australia if you're interested. Looking forward to your travels in NZ. Cheers, Stef.

  14. Congratulations Paddy i watched from the beginning to the end of your Maclehose trail❤. I have seen HongKong again through you. Thanks.

  15. awesome video, trying getting a heavy duty military Pancho, they go over you and your pack and help alot

  16. For someone who’s never done a 4-day hike before, I must say your gear list is pretty good!! Less is more, especially if you have the right gear. Like you said, way too many t-shirts and you’re already wearing a fleece, so you don’t need 2, but you already knew that. Good job!! We’re very big into gear and felt personally offended when you mentioned the gear on the table videos 🤣 😂 happy to talk gear and can offer more advice if you’re keen. We’ve talked a bit on Insta before so you can message us if you want. We just did 3,000km, 5 months across France, passing through Mt Blanc where you’ll be later in the year 👍
