平城京は、奈良時代の日本の首都。
現在の奈良県奈良市、大和郡山市に所在した。
平城京は、約1300年前の8世紀初頭、奈良時代の幕開けとともに誕生した。
中央北域に大内裏があり、東西約 4.3 kmの面積をもち、中央を南北に通る朱雀大路により左京と右京に二分され、さらに南北・東西を大路・小路で碁盤の目に整然と区画され、全域を72の区画に整理されていた。
政治と文化の中心地として栄えたこの地には、壮麗な宮殿や寺院が立ち並んでいた。
やがて都は平安京へと移され、平城京は歴史の表舞台から静かに姿を消していった。
現在の平城宮跡は、悠久の歴史をたたえながらも新たな魅力を放つ。
復元された朱雀門が空の青に映え、大極殿の堂々たる姿が往時の威厳を今に伝える。
広大な草原が広がるこの地を歩けば、千年以上前の雅な都の面影が心に浮かぶ。
春の桜、秋の黄金色の芒が揺れる風景は、貴族たちが愛した季節の美しさを今に宿す。
静寂の中に歴史の息吹を感じながら、現在と過去が交差する平城京。
平城京を訪れると時の流れを超えて、日本の原風景と出会うことができる。

Heijo-kyo was the capital of Japan during the Nara period (710-794).
It was located in present-day Nara City and Yamatokoriyama City, Nara Prefecture.
Heijo-kyo Capital was established approximately 1,300 years ago at the beginning of the 8th century, at the dawn of the Nara Period.
It was divided into two parts, Sakyo and Ukyo, by Suzaku-oji, which ran north-south through the center, and further divided into a grid of avenues and alleyways, which ran north-south and east-west, and the entire area was divided into 72 sections.
The area flourished as a political and cultural center, and was lined with magnificent palaces and temples.
Eventually, the capital was moved to Heian-kyo, and Heijo-kyo quietly disappeared from the stage of history.
Today, the ruins of Heijo-kyo Palace are a new attraction, even as it celebrates its long history.
The restored Suzakumon Gate stands out against the blue of the sky, and the imposing Daigoku-den Hall conveys the majesty of the past.
Walking through the vast grassy plains, one is reminded of the elegant capital of more than 1,000 years ago.
The scenery of cherry blossoms in spring and swaying golden glaze in autumn still captures the beauty of the seasons that the aristocrats loved so much.
The Heijo-kyo Capital is a place where the present and the past intersect, where you can feel the breath of history in the silence.
Visiting Heijo-kyo, you will encounter the original landscape of Japan, transcending the passage of time.
